Shane Hollander enters his rookie season focused on one thing only: playing the best damn hockey he can, and earning a spot in history as one of the greatest players in the league. Standing between him and his goal is Boston’s own promising young rookie, Alexei Rozanov.
Shane doesn’t particularly care about having a rival, but Rozanov seems as good a choice as any. He’s rude, arrogant, obnoxious off the ice and frustrating on it. And he’s pretty damn good at hockey.
Unfortunately, he also has a younger brother, who Shane finds much more interesting.
The Hollander-Rozanov rivalry is alive and well. And caught in the middle of it, is Ilya.

Ilya has talked to a lot of people during his time at the shelter. They come here, they fall in love with animals, and feel sympathy for their situation. It is so easy to see the emotions in their expression, in how their brows furrowing or smiles dance around their mouths. He usually focuses on the animals he works with, not the people coming here, but he cannot stop himself from following Anya as she makes her way towards the guy currently watching the guinea pigs. He is less expressive, as if he is holding back feelings towards the creatures around him, but Ilya is convinced that there is deep emotion in the depths of his eyes, as he looks at Anya. He sees the way his dark eyes sparkle like cool pools of water in the moonlight and Ilya needs to pull himself from their depths to answer his question without looking like a fool. ___ Or: Ilya owns an animal shelter. Shane is suddenly very motivated to do volunteer work. This fic is finished. We will be posting chapters on Sundays and Wednesdays

HE ADOPTED HER AS A ROOKIE???@historybuff617
The adoption story is actually pretty well known around Boston. After he was drafted, Shane flew to Japan to visit his grandparents in Kyoto before reporting to the organization.
On the trip back, he stopped in Paris and met a young woman who was trying to escape an abusive husband.
He helped her get safely to Canada, connected her with organizations that support women fleeing domestic violence, and stayed in contact while she got back on her feet.
When she gave birth by the end of his first year as a professional baseball player, she made the incredibly difficult decision to place the baby for adoption.
Shane adopted her.
Her name is Sofia Yuna Hollander.

His body did this chore for him - taking a beating, painfully building muscles - and in reward he got his father’s approval. In much lesser reward he also got his mama’s worry, which, while he loved her care, he wished she would worry less. Wished she could see that he knew the way the world worked and he could fit into it. Wished she would not remind him that she loved her gentle Ilyushenka and that he did not need to hide, not from her.

A guard dog's submission isn't weakness — it's a whole ecosystem built around one animal's safety. Shane learns the shape of it slowly: which hunger to feed, which to starve, when stillness is the only right shape for his own strength to take. Ilya learns something rarer — that being watched doesn't have to mean being hunted. Then it breaks all at once: something Shane's own teammates were never meant to find finds its way into their locker room anyway, and the appetite that spent a year holding itself in check finds out exactly what it was protecting.

He answered the phone, pressing it tight against his ear even as he maneuvered his way through the locker room and toward the hallway. “Hey. Is everything all right?”
There was a moment of silence, shaky and stiff that worried Scott more than the five separate calls did. Scott’s frown deepened, pulse beginning to hammer beneath his skin. He threw caution to the wind, unable to think clearly over the nausea beginning to roil in his gut. “Kip? What’s wrong?”
“Is this Scott?” An unfamiliar voice filtered through the speaker and into Scott’s ear, doing nothing to calm the anxiety slowly ratcheting up higher and higher within him.
Scott paused for a moment in the doorway, not caring if his teammates noticed him. “Who is this? What’s going on?”
“This is Kip’s dad.” Scott braced himself against the doorframe, stomach clawing its way up his throat.

It takes some time for Shane to notice. With three kids, they are busy, so it’s not surprising when Shane doesn’t observe at first. Shane and Ilya are both forty-five years old, and they have such full lives that sometimes time feels like a cruel joke. They’re busy, and always on the go, and blindingly happy. Shane tells himself this is why it takes him so long to realize. That lately, Ilya’s gone quieter during their evening nighttime routine before bed. When they shower and brush their teeth, Shane meticulously flossing between each molar while Ilya sort of haphazardly takes care of his own business, that Ilya doesn’t joke or laugh as much as usual. When they shower, he lets Shane get out first every time, and spends a little extra moment to himself. That he doesn’t lean in to let Shane card his hands through his hair anymore, and he used to love the feeling of that. -- or, a study of aging beside the person you love, via hollanov--

With a childhood spent with his mother cowering from his father and his adult life jumping from one-night stand to one-night stand when he isn't chirping people on the ice, Ilya never learned to have an argument with someone without laughing it off or ruining the relationship entirely.
His parents argued constantly, and his father had been cruel about it, too. He never wants to be like that, he'd rather die than hurt Shane, and the thought of Shane figuring out that he could do better than Ilya with his messed up mind and awful manners and leaving him is his worst nightmare...- Language:

His outstretched glove hangs there, frozen, as the noise of the arena mutates into a ringing buzz. Then he’s moving, pushed away by Marlow, and then Boston’s goalie. There’s a flurry of movement, a trainer with a towel, more blood dripping onto the ice, and he just. Stands there. Staring.
Ilya is helped off the ice. Shane doesn’t even tap his stick.
Remember when Sidney Crosby caught a puck with his jaw? That doesn't happen to Shane. That happens to Ilya.

The entire time Hayden has known him, and known of him, he has been Ilya Rozanov; violent player and serial womanizer. The media was saying those things about a child, and no one had given a shit, because Ilya had never spoken up for himself. He’d never protested their unfounded claims, and he never tried to prove them wrong, either. Which, now that Hayden knows the things he does, makes perfect fucking sense. or Hayden finds himself unlearning everything he thought he knew about Ilya Rozanov

Maybe together they could figure out a way to make sure Ilya was never afraid of David again. He really didn’t want to be afraid of David.
“Is… silly.” Ilya said. “Maybe not silly, but now that we are here and not there, I see it was silly. I broke the wine, and I thought - maybe everyone will be angry. And…” Clearing his throat, Ilya pushed past his discomfort to spit out the next part. “Well, angry back in Russia is not the same as angry here, I think.”
“What was angry like back in Russia?”

“Hi Irina.” Ilya feels his blood still in his veins. His vision almost immediately blurs at the sound of his mother’s name falling so gently from Shane’s lips. Shane rambles something, almost to himself, before: “I’m Shane. Shane Hollander. And I’m in love with your son, Ilya.” Ilya’s breath catches, heart lurching in his chest, fluttering almost painfully as the realization hits him: He’s introducing himself to her. . . or Shane talks to Ilya’s mom, Ilya overhears.
