"Maybe," Irina said, "I will ask. Maybe, Shane and Ilyushenka would like to go on ice together? Hockey maybe, or only skating?"
"Shane would certainly prefer to play hockey," Yuna said, as Shane stepped into the room, his eyes going suddenly bright when she glanced at him as the word hockey left her mouth. Sometimes she thought it was like having a little puppy hearing the word walk.
"Hockey?" Shane asked, still standing in the doorway, his whole body vibrating a little, "I can have hockey?"
The Hollanders go on a trip to Russia in 1996 to attend a wedding, and Shane makes a friend. In 2008, he meets his friend again. Part of him knows it's his friend, sadly, that part is not his brain.

It’s subtle, but the twitch on the corner of his lips is enough for Shane to lean forward and press a kiss on Ilya's cheek. “Boring, right?” AKA... Ilya has something very important to ask, and Shane couldn't be more prepared to answer him.
