The First Bloom of Spring by Anonymous
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers | Heated Rivalry - All Media Types, Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid

For the first time in nineteen years, a sudden, blinding flash of color flooded Ilya’s world.
It was as if a dormant switch inside him had been violently flipped on. His Alpha instincts, usually as dormant and indifferent as the rest of him, surged forward with a fierce, possessive roar that made his blood run hot. The dull gray reality he had inhabited his entire life vanished, replaced by a single, absolute, unyielding mandate:
That Omega is mine.
Ilya didn’t know his name. He didn’t know his story, or his background. But as his blue eyes locked onto the stunning stranger, watching the way his warm brown eyes crinkled with a soft, gentle laugh, Ilya knew with absolute certainty that he would stop at nothing until that Omega belonged to him.

The man doesn’t look phased. On the contrary, he’s acting like it’s completely normal to talk about sex with a stranger.
“Well, my wife wants me to…” David hesitates, but what damage could it do? Tomorrow, he’ll be on a plane back to Ottawa and he’ll never see this man again. “She wants me to try being more dominant.”
The Russian grins. “Oh, you have met the right person.”
Or: In 2014, David and Ilya become friends and start swapping sex advice. It's too bad they don't recognize each other.

They're having breakfast when he tells them. He only remembers because he'd dreamed weird again last night. This time it was an older boy, who was trying to stop a little golden-haired baby from crying.
“What,” says Mom, in that flat voice she gets when she's trying not to sound surprised.
“...what?” says Dad, who clearly hadn't been listening. That's fine, Shane forgets to listen too, sometimes.
“I keep dreaming people I don't know,” Shane repeats patiently. He can be patient.
Shane Hollander habitually ends up in other people's dreams, which is fine. It's a family trait, on both sides, to slip into the dreams of the people you love. What's less fine is how Shane keeps dreaming strangers.
Or: like if a soulmates au took several detours.

Shane woke up alone, in pain and confused. He remembered the hit; Marlow had sent him down to the ice. He remembered Ilya visiting before anyone else. He doesn't understand what is wrong; why are more tests being ordered? The C test. The test for being a rare Male Carrier.
He hadn't thought about Carriers since he was in school. Why would he? His mother had done the test when he was a child. It had been negative. So why was he hurting in places he shouldn't? Why was a nice nurse telling him they needed to take him somewhere else for some specialised testing?
When Shane Hollander took a nasty hit on the ice against Boston, he was woken up to a very serious, very shocking discovery. To something he hadn't believed was possible. He now has to deal with the fallout; decisions have to be made, as well as life-altering choices. But first he has to work out how to tell his years-long situationship - who he is completely and totally in love with - that he managed to get him pregnant, when neither of them was aware it was possible. Shane is terrified, confused and furious all at the same time. All he wants is Ilya, but is Ilya still going to want him now?

Shane Hollander arrives in Vegas with a question he hasn’t spoken out loud.
It isn’t complicated, exactly. It’s just the kind of question that requires honesty he isn’t sure he’s ready for - about what he and Ilya Rozanov have been doing for the past few years, about what six months of silence after Sochi actually meant, and about whether any of it is worth staying close to or whether he finally needs to go.
He gets his answer in a locked bathroom at the NHL Awards.
Ilya spends the summer convinced that Shane is fine. Upset? Yes. Angry? Definitely. But Shane always felt things fiercely despite what everyone said about him when he had his back turned. He’d calm down over the summer and then he’d be there like he always had been. He fills the silence with discipline and routine and the comfortable certainty that later is still available to him.
He’s wrong.
By the time Ilya understands what he actually lost, Shane is already gone; and Ilya is left trying to find a way back to someone who closed the door long before Ilya had ever thought to just walk through it.

“You know, I’ve been waiting to meet you his whole life.” At Ilya’s surprised look, David nods, “His whole life. Meet someone, fall in love, bring them home, the good stuff. I hoped he would be happy."

Ilya makes it eight minutes and nineteen seconds before he finally gives into the urge to speak.
“So…now we just wait?” he murmurs, staring down at the spot where his line meets the water, imagining what the feeling might be like when a fish actually bites on the worm at the bottom.
“Yes.” Shane bites out, laser-focused on his own rod.
Ilya sighs and looks around the calm lake, nothing but the sound of birds and the occasional lap of water against the side of their boat to fill his ears.
“Canada continues to amaze.”

Shane still hadn’t spoken. This was not how he expected any of this to happen. He began to think that it would’ve been less painful and confusing and awkward if his parents had walked in on him and Ilya being something. Something more than two guys sitting on a couch playing MLH together. Something more than two men now standing in his living room petrified, orbiting each other and refusing to light a spark. If Ilya had Shane the way he usually did, blushing and writhing under him, he would be less heartbroken at the bewilderment on his parents' faces.

Ilya nodded. “Yes, is true. He is the best player in the league.” David’s eyebrows shot up in surprise. “Do not tell him I tell you this,” Ilya added quickly. “He still thinks I think he is second best.” Ilya shrugged, a small smile gracing his face. “It can be our secret.” David nodded. Through the haze of his fear, Ilya tried desperately to remember the last time he had kissed Shane. The last time he had said I love you to him. He let himself live in the memory as a tear slid down his face. Ilya didn’t even have a photo of Shane that he could look at because they always delete them. For a brief moment, he thought about googling Shane just to look at him one last time. Then, just as quickly as their descent had started, the plane leveled out. Distantly, Ilya heard an announcement echoing throughout the cabin. He could barely translate it through the panic, catching words like “engine,” “emergency landing,” and “brace for a rough impact.” Or: What if the plane incident in The Long Game was more serious and Ilya got hurt?

She’d never say anything, of course, because she could be wrong. In fact, most days Yuna was certain she was wrong. Shane had only ever dated girls, and had never shown any outright signs of liking… anything else. But that didn’t stop her from wondering, occasionally, whether her son was entirely straight. But the last hour or so had certainly put paid to that suspicion. Because Shane was receiving a frankly alarming number of texts from someone named ‘Lily’. Or: Yuna and David meet Ilya Rozanov at the hospital after Shane’s injury.
