  2. Shane Hollander has spent his whole career being told he and Ilya Rozanov hate each other. He's inclined to agree, right up until a hit in his rookie season puts him in a hospital bed and eleven years of a life he never had unspool behind his eyes: secret hotel rooms, a wedding, kids, a fight that nearly ended them, a crash that brought them back. He wakes up to a body that aches for a husband who was never real, and a rival standing at the end of his bed who has no idea what he means to him.
Or: Shane wakes up from a coma grieving a marriage that never happened, and decides the only way through it is to go build the real thing from scratch.

  3. Someone’s been calling Ilya’s name for a while now, but Ilya’s got the viewfinder to his eye, the whole world shrunk down to that single square of light, and he hates being interrupted when he’s shooting.

Ilya is a professional photographer; Shane is a journalist, working for a rival newspaper.

  4. At some point between getting home and finding the mess in the kitchen, Shane calls the police and his parents in quick succession.

He doesn’t remember those phone calls at all. Blocked them from his memory the second they were over—doesn’t know what he said, what his mother replied—what the operator on the other end of the line asked him.

The only proof he has of ever placing the calls is the record of them in his phone—neatly stacked over-on-another. 911 right below Mom.

Below that, a series of phone calls to Ilya (husband), some barely even twenty seconds long, just short little I love you’s and what juice did you say you wanted from the store’s. Shane actually has to scroll for a while before he finds any other number in his call log.

If Shane were to add all of that data into an excel sheet he’d have proof that Ilya took up about 90% of his call records and yet it doesn’t feel like enough.

  7. After dying in a plane crash in 2021, Ilya wakes up in a nondescript hotel room, identical to hundreds he has stayed in during his decade-long NHL career. Is he in Hell? Mama is not here. Neither is Shane.

But then the phone rings; a representative from CCM wants to confirm Ilya will be on time to his photo shoot with Shane Hollander.

On the way to the rink, Ilya, who learned from the very best, makes a multi-step plan:

    1. Texting
    2. No sleeping around
    3. Friends
    4. First names
    5. Boyfriends

Ilya made Shane fall in love with him once. He can do it again.

    He has to.

“Do you think I could get into the dressing room hallway?” Ilya asked.
The photographer cocked their head, “Why?”
“I feel that doesn’t matter to you.”
Ilya could feel his stomach sinking. How was he supposed to get to Shane Hollander if he never stayed still? “Do you know when he will be done with everything?” When the photographer gave him a confused and irritated look, he reached for his wallet. “Better yet, do you have his phone number?”

  12. Ilya's been taking care of himself for so long, and not always doing a very good job of it. It would be understandable, Ilya thinks, if Shane didn’t really know how to do it yet. Not when they’re only a month into being married and three months into being honest and less than a year since that hotel room in Tampa, where Shane had climbed into his lap and let Ilya cry into his shoulder and held him like no one had held Ilya since he was very small.

A grad student and early organizer for ACT UP, he spends his days marching through the Village and organizing mutual aid, fighting for a queer community battling for its life against a devastating epidemic. 14. “Ilya?” his voice is thick and heavy on his tongue. He's so agonizingly beautiful, his face tender and red from the impact of his helmet hitting the ice moments before. “I’m okay,” he insists, blinking slowly.

And then, starting at his fingertips, Shane starts to fade away, just like St-Simon and Marlow and Pike moments before. Eyes soft, Shane gazes at Ilya, not seeming to realize what’s happening at all. And Ilya, overcome with terror, can only watch as Shane’s whole being simply disintegrates into thin air.

  19. It’s his Person.

Missed you missed you missed you, he tries to convey with no mouth and no voice and all his heart. He’s reborn the way he died; the name of his Person nestled safe against his tongue.

“Ilya,” Shane gasps, and his heart beats again.

Shane Hollander dies the second Ilya Rozanov’s plane goes down. It just takes a while for his body to catch up.

Thankfully, death isn't permanent — for either of them. Their tangled souls have been given a second chance at life, and they’re going to act like it. Which means never separating again. Ever.

After all, death can’t part them. Why should hockey?

  20. A fiery plane crash claims Ilya Rozanov’s life in January. By April, Shane Hollander is dead of a broken heart. The truth dies with them.

Yuna Hollander will do anything to get her son back, including hiring a shady shaman to resurrect him. There’s just one complication — Shane isn’t coming back alone.

Now there are codependent (not)zombies in her house wearing Ilya and Shane’s faces. When they inexplicably act more like a married couple than the bitter rivals she expected, Yuna is convinced that they came back wrong.

It’s easier than admitting she never understood them from the start.
