  1. It's Fall of 2014 and Ilya Rozanov has cut all ties with Russia. But there's no such thing as a clean break, and leaving isn't as simple as never going back.
    -
Basically a very self-indulgent fic about how hard it would be for Ilya to actually move on from the pain of the past and to go no contact with his family in a timeline where Grigori is still alive. Also, Ilya deserves to be known and loved by more people than just Shane and Sveta. Forced/Found Family here we come.
*Sequel to my canon-divergence fic "To only ever know the cold" (go read that first or this won't make sense!)

  3. 2014: Ilya Rozanov shocks the world and breaks Shane Hollander’s heart by disappearing without explanation, and without a goodbye kiss.

2024: A devastating injury forces Shane to retire early, so he moves to a small town to coach girls hockey and figure out what the hell to do with the rest of his life.

When recently divorced Ilya Rozanov walks into the rink with his twin girls, Shane has to decide if he’s brave enough to risk a second chance on a broken heart, and a rekindled romance with the first and only boy he ever loved.

    ***

“So.” Ilya cleared his throat. “Should we tell the girls their Daddy and their coach used to date?”

“We didn’t date. We hooked up a few times, then you disappeared.” Shane looked away to hide his heartbreak as he lied, “It doesn’t even matter. It’s not like I loved you or anything.”

“No, of course not.” Ilya tried to smile through a lie of his own, “I didn’t love you either.”

  4. The video opens with an air of domesticity and almost innocence to it that foreshadowed nothing of what would follow. A quick sweeping shot of a bedroom, lights low, before the camera settles on a man standing in front of a mirror. The atmosphere is intimate and cozy. Ilya Rozanov is just finishing pulling the jersey over his head, abs and a trail of hair disappearing under a sea of blue. He turns to look in the mirror. His black boxer briefs visible where the jersey ends. HOLLANDER spelled across the back with 24 in the center

  6. Ilya left for a three-day trip with his friend Svetlana. When he comes home he expects his boyfriend Shane to greet him, but instead he finds him crying in bed. Ilya stepped inside their shared house after three days away. It shouldn’t have felt like such a long time, as three days wasn’t all that much, but now that he and Shane were officially boyfriends, every time one of them left the house, it felt like an eternity before they returned. Ilya fully expected Shane to come running up to him, as he always did. But he didn’t. In fact, the house was completely still. The kitchen was quiet, and there wasn’t a sound coming from the living room, either. “Shane, I’m home.” No response. He kicked off his shoes, dropped his bags by the door, and immediately went looking for his boyfriend. He checked every room in the house until he reached the last one: their shared bedroom upstairs. The door creaked as Ilya pushed it open. Shane was lying in bed, and Ilya immediately felt a wave of relief wash over him. At least he was there. But then he noticed that Shane wasn’t sleeping, as he’d initially thought. Instead, he was quietly sobbing into his pillow. Ilya froze for a moment before slowly approaching the bed and sitting down beside him. He gently cupped Shane’s face in his hand. “Hey… hey, what’s wrong?” he asked softly. Shane buried his face deeper into the pillow, his body trembling with each sob. “Baby…” Ilya whispered, genuine concern evident in his voice. At that, Shane took a shaky breath and slowly turned his head over his shoulder. “You’re back,” he murmured. Something inside Ilya shattered. He gently turned Shane onto his back and leaned over him, his gaze fixed on his boyfriend’s tear-streaked face. Seeing Shane like this, so overwhelmed by something Ilya didn’t yet understand, made his chest ache in a way he couldn’t put into words. Without another thought, Ilya pressed his lips firmly against Shane’s, pouring all the worry and relief he’d been holding inside into the kiss. Shane’s fingers began to tangle in Ilya’s curls as an attempt to pull him even closer, even though there wasn’t any space between them now. Ilya pulled away after a while, just enough to look at him, his hand resting against Shane’s cheek. “Baby, talk to me. What happened?” Shane shook his head, his eyes squeezing shut as another tear slipped down his cheek. “Nothing.” “Nothing?” Ilya repeated softly, brushing the tear away with his thumb. “You’re crying, sweetheart.” “I know.” “Then tell me why.” “I don’t know.” The answer came out so quietly that Ilya almost didn’t hear it. For a moment, he simply looked at him. Shane seemed just as frustrated with himself as Ilya was worried about him, his brows drawn together and his lips pressed into a thin line as he tried to get his breathing under control. “Okay,” Ilya murmured, leaning down to press a kiss to his forehead. “Okay, that’s fine. You don’t have to know.” Shane reached for him almost immediately, grabbing a fistful of his shirt and pulling him closer. Ilya let himself be pulled down until their chests were pressed together. He wrapped his arms around his boyfriend, one hand settling at the back of his head, and waited. For a while, neither of them said anything. Then Shane whispered, “I missed you.” A small, almost disbelieving smile tugged at Ilya’s lips. “I missed you, too, malysh.” “No, but” Shane stopped. Ilya felt him take a shaky breath against his neck. “I don’t think you understand.” “Then help me understand.” “I tried.” Shane’s voice cracked. “I tried to be normal about it.” Ilya’s smile faded. “What do you mean?” “It was only three days. I knew it was only three days. You told me when you were coming back, and I knew you were coming back, and I kept telling myself that.” Shane swallowed hard, his fingers tightening around Ilya’s shirt. “But the house was so quiet.” Ilya closed his eyes briefly. “Oh, sweetheart.” “And everything felt wrong.”

  10. "I am… Not great. At swimming." This was something Ilya never would have admitted in any other circumstance, but he'd confessed to worse, earlier tonight.

Shane laughed in his face, bright and loud, the corners of his eyes crinkled. It was hard for Ilya to be annoyed, with Shane's face still cradled in his palm. "No shit, I've seen you swim. Who taught you that terrible breaststroke?"

After Ilya and Shane are outed, Marleau books himself on to the same queer studies course that the Raiders management forced Ilya to attend when he was cancelled for being a homophobe.

It turns out several other Raiders players thought Marleau had the right idea about that. Now around half of the Raiders roster are all sat together in the little classroom. It’s about as chaotic as you would expect. The professor Sandra is forced to add an increasing number of amendments to the ‘Course Rules and Guidelines’ that she never expected to be putting into writing.

    -----
Amendment No. 5. - No, there are no additional course credits for “proving you’re an ally by complimenting your bros in the locker room showers."

Amendment No. 6. - Downloading Grindr will also not get you any extra credits. [ Although if you wish to download Grindr for its intended purposes, I would obviously not want to discourage you in this. ]

Amendment No. 7. - Taking time during games to tell Admirals player Scott Hunter that you think his boyfriend is extremely hot is NOT actually effective allyship within the league. Yes, EVEN if Ilya Rozanov told you it would be.

  12. It’s Ilya who brings it up. He’s in his kitchen, making himself some kind of soup that Shane is already searching for recipes of—it’s called rassolnik. Leaning with one hip against the counter, he asks, “What about your sex dungeon?”

“I don’t have a sex dungeon,” Shane says, both grossed out and intrigued by the idea.

“The apartment, moya lyubov,” Ilya replies, fondness sheathed in annoyance. He slurps loudly, laughing when Shane makes a face at him over their video call. “What will you do with the apartment?”

    “Sell it, maybe.”

Or, Shane doesn't sell the secret-sex-apartment building. He starts renting it out, and somehow ends up with a gaggle of Russian tenants-turned-friends, several stray cats, and one very spoiled hamster.

But then the phone rings; a representative from CCM wants to confirm Ilya will be on time to his photo shoot with Shane Hollander.

On the way to the rink, Ilya, who learned from the very best, makes a multi-step plan:

    1. Texting
    2. No sleeping around
    3. Friends
    4. First names
    5. Boyfriends

  17. Shane Hollander is a former professional cyclist who now owns a bike shop in Colorado. Ilya Rozanov, the tattoo artist who owns the shop next door, thinks boy scout Shane Hollander should take a ride on his motorcycle instead. But what starts out as a casual fling can't stay that way for long--not once Shane and Ilya discover the depths of their chemistry (and Ilya the many benefits of little spandex shorts). Both of them have been hurt before, and the only way to move forward is to get over their pasts. It's a hill climb in both directions, but if Shane Hollander can do anything, it's push himself to endure the burn when he knows the ride home will be that much more satisfying.

  18. Shane watches as Ilya laughs brightly, shaking his head despite the person on the other end of the phone being unable to hear him. He responds with the same jovial tone that is being sent in his direction, the words still a chirp as is usual between hockey players, but spoken with a lighthearted teasing laced throughout it. There’s no hunched shoulders, tense jaw, dropped gaze. Ilya is the opposite, sprawled across the couch, phone held in a loose grip, the speaker phone creating a bit of echo but not interacting with the quality of the call. One would think that Ilya is talking to someone he adores, like Svetlana, or maybe even Shane when they’re playing the latest NHL video game, battling against each other. It definitely doesn’t sound like any conversation Shane has ever had with one of his own teammates.

  19. There was no “No Son of Mine” lecture, no slurs were ever thrown around, and neither Shane nor Ilya were ever banished from Yuna and David’s house or life. Instead, a quiet questioning began, where all of Shane’s choices were investigated for motive and reason.

When did this start? When did it become serious? Are you sure about this?

When David first walked in on Shane and Ilya kissing, and Shane had to make what felt like a walk of shame to his parents house with Ilya in tow, he assumed that all he had to do was rip the bandaid off. There was no more hiding, there was no pretending this didn’t happen. The truth was out there whether he liked it or not, and he was vocal with Ilya about not liking it at all. But, he told himself, he just had to man up. He could do this. Rip the bandaid off, tell the truth, and tomorrow will be better.

He was really incredibly wrong about that.

  20. There’s still a big part of him that wants all the same things he used to. The hockey, those other interests, the simplicity of the smaller circle. But there’s a twinge of something else now beside it when he considers it for too long, a bruise he can’t place the origins of. He’d been able to put somewhat of a name to it, after Rose.

He only wishes he hadn’t filled in the rest of the blanks staring down at a grainy photograph of Svetlana Vetrova in a convenience store parking lot in Boston, a bag hanging off of her manicured finger just transparent enough to make out the logo of a First Response as she’d ducked into a sleek, black sports car, driving away with Shane's best worst would-have-been and, presumably, Ilya Rozanov's baby.

Shane feels no particular way about this turn of events. He really, honestly, mostly is somewhat close to believing that, too. It's progress.
