1 – 20 of 29 Works in Ilya Rozanov is Trying His Best

  • Ilya Rozanov is Trying His Best ×
  1. Ilya Rozanov does not come pre-installed with good communication or healthy coping skills. Is he going to seek out help on his own? Hell no! But when a family member kills himself, fellow Boston Raider and friend Cliff Marleau decides that Ilya is going to therapy come hell or high water. And Ilya... well, Ilya is just playing along to keep the peace. Right? He doesn't need therapy. But if it helps his friend be less worried, so be it.

    OR

Therapy helps Ilya upskill enough to diffuse the tuna meltdown. Things get better after that. And then they get worse, because mental health is a bitch not linear.

--or, a slight A/U where Shane didn't stay in Montreal after the cottage just because he wanted to or because he thought it was expected of him and those years after he came out to his team had been worse than he lets on

---OR, Shane acquires a Russian duckling, finally sets the record straight with his man, goes full 'protect the rookie' mode when his duckling is checked during a game in Montreal, and learns how to be part of a team again (in that order)

  3. “You are braver than me, dude. You could not pay me to call some of my exes.”

Ilya shrugged. Truthfully, it was a stretch to call anybody on the list an ex. The only person he had been an official, labelled boyfriend to was Rob, and he wasn’t about to call Rob to ask where things went wrong.

“Wait, how are you going to talk to that one guy if you don't even know his name?” Cliff asked.

Fuck. Ilya should have taken his time to think of someone easier to put on the heartbreak list.

“Not sure. I will work on it,” Ilya scowled.

    ━━━━━━━━

When Ilya’s boyfriend Rob dumps him, he decides to reach out to his top five heartbreaks to figure out why he is so easy to leave.

Some people on the top five list are friends, some he hasn't spoken to in years. One man on the list proves hard to find, a one-night stand with beautiful freckles whose name Ilya never learned.

High Fidelity-ish AU. Ilya owns a record shop and figures his shit out post-breakup as he finds the person he's meant to fall in love with.

  4. The events of week five of Ilya attending his mandated Queer Studies course.

Ilya nearly gets caught texting his queer studies professor in the locker room, befriends Sandra’s girlfriend and learns some new and very relevant terminology.

Or, what happens when you’re in love with Rose Landry’s ex-boyfriend and someone explains to you the concept of compulsory heterosexuality.

  7. On the eve of his thirty-fifth birthday, Shane Hollander falls asleep beside his husband and thinks about everything his own fear had cost them.

He wakes up ten years earlier. Twenty-five. No wedding ring. No Anya at the foot of the bed. No Ilya beside him.

He still remembers it all: the years of hiding, the loneliness Ilya carried alone in Ottawa, the breakdown that nearly took him, the pain that could have been prevented if Shane had just chosen him sooner.

He also remembers their happy ending.

This time, Shane wants to change the cost. He wants to love Ilya openly, before it breaks him. He wants to be the person Ilya needed when he was most vulnerable.

  9. In room 1410, Ilya Rozanov is ready to walk out the door after successfully getting his 19 year old hockey rival into bed. He knew how to make this moment happen and he knows what they have to be to each other now that it's over. But as he turns the doorknob to leave, he's stopped with questions he never expected. And giving Shane Hollander what he needs in that moment will change everything.

I note which chapters are SFW vs NFSW, because many of you said knowing meant the difference between reading this on your lunch break or having to wait. (Thank you for wanting to read my work that much.)

Covers the first two years of their rookie seasons (which is mostly skipped over in the show/books). Canon divergent from the first hookup seen in HR s01ep01. Most things are from the show but the timeline is a mix of both; Hunter and Marleau are aged up per the show instead of as young as they are in the books. (Also, Shane and Ilya don't wait *two years*, they stick to the book timeline. IYKYK.)

Please note this will the first in a series; you can subscribe to the whole series as well so you don't miss anything :)

This thing that they have—whatever the hell it is—it’s good. It’s easy. It feels like the only thing keeping Ilya afloat sometimes.

He can’t let it get to a place where it’s more than just a good, convenient fuck and some fun teasing in between. Even if sometimes, in brief moments of tenderness, it already feels like it’s more than that. Or at least like it’s something that can be, if they just let it.

    But they don’t. They can’t.

Although sometimes, Ilya does find himself giving in to the urge to look at Shane just a little bit longer, to let his touch be just a little bit gentler, more reverent, than what it would be for something as casual as they claim this to be—albeit sparingly.

Sometimes, just for a moment, he lets himself indulge. He lets some of that affection bleed out of him because he feels like he’ll implode if he doesn’t.

But he always catches himself before it can linger.

  11. Shane Hollander accidentally comes out to his hockey team after years of hiding his sexuality behind carefully crafted personas and unfinished coming out speeches. As the Metros slowly begin icing him out on and off the ice, Shane spirals between rage, grief, and self-discovery—while Ilya refuses to let him forget exactly who he is.

  12. One delayed flight. One closing airport bar. One truth or dare game that gets significantly out of hand. Ilya Rozanov came to his ex-girlfriend's wedding to prove he was over it. Shane Hollander came to his best friend's wedding to prove he was fine. They were both lying, but they didn't know that about each other yet. Then they had to share a room.

  13. “Well, I guess you got what you wanted from me already,” Hollander continued. “Whatever. Fuck you.”

“Wait, no, Hollander.” Ilya turned, throwing an arm into Hollander’s path. “That’s not—”

“No, it’s fine. Stupid of me to expect anything else.” Hollander shook his head, gaze downcast, the barest hint of angry pink tinging his freckled cheeks. “Thanks for making it good, at least.”

    It. His first time.

Ilya was the worst sort of asshole.

  14. “You are making 12 burgers this time?” came Ilya’s voice from behind him.

“Yeah, I didn’t think eight would be enough,” Shane said, trying not to sound defensive.

“And you found a completely new recipe for this, yes? Did not just multiply the one you made earlier this week, I mean.”

    “...Shut up.”

“Never. You are too boring, I need to be interesting for both of us.”

Shane’s arm stilled on the grill for just a second, the word boring prodding him right in a sore spot, like a finger pressing against a bruise.

    ===

Part 4 of "hate Rozanov, not Ilya". Shane decides to invite JJ, Hayden, and Jackie over to the cottage to have a day to themselves and to introduce them to Ilya off the ice. They're mostly on the same page now, only, Ilya won't stop calling Shane "boring", and Shane doesn't know what to make of that, nor does he know how to ask about it himself. Things are pleasant, if awkward, until Hayden and JJ catch wind of Ilya's penchant for the (endearing?) quip and confront him, unaware that Shane can hear. But how will Ilya justify himself, when he thinks that Shane isn't around?

    OR,

This is a one shot from my larger fic, "Growing Outward", which is basically book 7 of the Game Changers series if it was about Luca Haas. In that fic, Luca moves in with Ilya for his rookie year and slowly gets adopted by Hollanov. He also starts to develop a crush on fellow rookie, Eric Young. Some people wanted some scenes from Eric's perspective, so here we are!

This scene is briefly alluded to in Chapter 13: Navigating of "Growing Outward" from Ilya's perspective, but this can be also read as a cute stand-alone fic if you really wanted to.

    Hope you enjoy :)

  17. Ilya had never really let himself picture it before. Not for too long, anyway. Himself at twelve, standing in that doorway, seeing her lifeless body on the bed. He didn’t have any photographs of himself from that age, which made it easier to keep the memory at a distance. Just a fact. Something that happened to a version of himself he barely remembered being. Niko turning twelve closed that distance. Ilya is going through a depressive episode. Which is hitting differently now that his son is the same age he was when his mom died.

When a poorly timed phone call and an open window leads Shane's parents to a massive misunderstanding, he's stuck pretending he's still dating Rose. Which works fine for a month, until Ilya's jealousy starts to flare and Shane's parents witness a fight entirely different from the one they have on the ice.

    ---
"See? Shane's probably just in the kitchen,” Yuna murmured softly, putting her purse down on the side table beside the door. “Maybe he’s—”

“Okay, you were maybe telling me the truth,” a voice suddenly called, cutting her off before she could finish her sentence. “At least partially.”

Yuna frowned, the deep, accented voice catching her off guard. Before she could piece together where she recognized the voice from, though, she saw Ilya Rozanov walking through her son’s apartment. He was barefoot, his hair slightly damp and his clothes casual. Sweatpants and a white T-shirt that clung to him after a shower.

From the kitchen, David heard his sons’ voice ring out, too. “What do you mean partially?” Shane responded, gesturing at his phone as Ilya showed him something on it. “That’s exactly what I told you.”

  19. “You are okay with this, really?” Ilya asked, abruptly.

Yuna looked up from her plate, exchanging a glance with David, who also seemed unsure of what exactly Ilya was referring to.

“What do you mean, Ilya?” David asked.

“Me and Shane. Us being together.”

David set his utensils down. He looked genuinely concerned for the first time tonight, his brow furrowed. Yuna wasn’t quite sure that she understood, either.

“Well, I don’t think you’ve given us a good reason not to be okay with it,” David said.

“Maybe I had my doubts, but I think it’s obvious that you love him, you really do,” Yuna added.

“I love him, that is enough?” Ilya asked.

Is love enough? How was Yuna supposed to answer that?

Follow-up to "why do you hate him?". Yuna and David invite Ilya to dinner after finding out that he and Shane are in love. They need to know, is this real, and is Ilya as good for Shane as he says he is? Along the way, the find that there's much more hidden beneath his indifferent exterior.
