The god was hanging off a purple sloper with his left arm, shaking out and chalking up casually with his right. Shane barely noticed himself taking a few steps forward as he squinted at the grade. V9. Shane watched as the climber matched his hands and then carefully rotated on his toe to dip his left hand back into the chalk bag swinging at his hips. A little puff of chalk exploded out onto the man’s bare lower back, an area Shane had been trying to ignore, as he always tried to ignore the muscled backs of the bros who tore off their shirt as soon as they got in the gym. His eyes drifted upward, taking in the impressive lats, flexing and glistening with a sheen of sweat, and all the way up to the tousled blonde hair...

    What the fuck. Was that…? Shane blanched as he realized that he recognized the climber. He wasn’t a Greek god at all. He was Russian. And not a god either, but that was besides the point. It was Ilya Rozanov, the top male youth boulderer in Russia, winner of last year’s IFSC Youth World Championship, where Shane had gotten 4th place.

    Ilya looks at him. Shane has not moved from the doorway. He has one hand still on the frame.

    "I don't know," Ilya says, which is the truest thing he has said in months.

    Shane makes a sound that isn't quite a laugh. "That's not—" He stops. Runs a hand over his face. "You can't be here, Ilya."

    The name. Again. Said almost like an accident.

    "Why are you here?" he asks instead of responding to that.

    Shane goes still.

    "This isn't your place," Ilya says. Carefully. "I mean, you don’t live here. You live somewhere else, a real one, nicer, bigger, or I don’t know because I have never been to it. So why are you in the fuck building at four in the morning?"

    Shane's jaw tightens. For a second Ilya thinks he won't answer, that he will turn and go back inside and this will be just another door between them and then Shane says, low and bitten-off: "I come here sometimes."

    "Why?"

    "You know why."

     

    Or, After Shane leaves Ilya in Boston, Ilya becomes a mess and Shane thinks he's ruined everything. They both seek each other silently until they cross paths again. Eventually, someone has to say something.

     He could guess from the context – he’d heard of rookies being assigned to live with older single players, veterans who could show them the ropes. Maybe that was what Fletcher meant. Connors maybe, he was probably a handful of years older than Ilya. Or perhaps Becker. Ilya just hoped it was someone who–

    "You'll be staying with Nikolai Petrov and his family."

    The words hit Ilya like a punch to the gut. For a moment, he forgot how to breathe.

    "Petrov?" he managed, his voice coming out strangled.

The missing piece of something that felt like it was just beyond his reach. This was quiet ease and small moments of comfort and a look that makes the rest of the world fade away. This was how he felt with Kip.

    Scott stilled.

    It was as if someone had whispered it in his ear. It was as if the final piece of this insane, deranged puzzle finally clicked into place. His heart was pounding in his ears. He was probably wrong. In fact he was entirely wrong. This wasn’t like him and Kip. It couldn’t be Kip. Scott had been watching too many romantic comedies. His head was in the clouds.

    But they weren’t touching.

    Hollander and Rozanov were as close as they could be, without laying a single finger on one another. They were specifically, rigidly, separate. The warmth between them was bridled. Entirely. And this, Scott realized, his heart sinking into the floor, was also how he had felt with Kip.

In that fic, Luca moves in with Ilya for his rookie year and slowly gets adopted by Hollanov. He also starts to develop a crush on fellow rookie, Eric Young. Some people wanted some scenes from Eric's perspective, so here we are!

    This scene is briefly alluded to in Chapter 13: Navigating of "Growing Outward" from Ilya's perspective, but this can be also read as a cute stand-alone fic if you really wanted to.
