  1. A medical retirement took Shane Hollander off the ice, but photography gave him a way to stay close to the game. Now a prestigious editorial photographer, he’s the obvious choice when ESPN revives the Body Issue.

And Ilya Rozanov, fresh off the best season of his career, is the obvious choice for the cover.

They haven’t spoken in nearly seven years. And all the reasons why are suddenly coming back into focus.

  2. It was the strangest drunken sensation he’d ever felt in his life — the whoosh that immediately followed and the sudden lightness of his limbs. Blinking in slow surprise, Ilya looked down and realized that he was, much to his chagrin, now stuck against his bedroom wall, his wrists seemingly glued on either side of him.

“Booby trap,” he whispered, giggling to himself as he tugged at his bindings.

There was a scuffling noise and Ilya looked up just in time to watch in awe as Shane Hollander literally dropped down from the ceiling.

Or, Ilya’s (hot) new roommate might be a spider. Ilya has a crush on him anyway.

  3. There was probably something wrong with him, that being spanked until he cried by his husband made him pliable and horny, but he didn’t care. He didn’t have to worry about anything anymore, except pleasing Ilya. Shane doesn't make decisions anymore. That's Ilya's job - all Shane has to do is obey.

  4. The other cottage on the lake - the one of the other side, tucked into the treeline of a cove - existed here before Shane Hollander bought all the land around it and built his own cottage.

The previous owner was one of his favorite people. He truly doesn't expect that to happen again - just as long as they're cordial.

It's just that...really, who could have guessed "the artist" his realtor told him wanted to put down roots is someone that Shane can't stay away from.

  5. Shane was still trying to settle Max, cupping the back of his head, pressing him back against his chest. Body warmth, familiar scent—that was supposed to be enough. That was supposed to be some innate thing, some animalistic pull newborns had toward their parents, hardwired in them from the beginning. Shane had read that. He was pretty sure he had read that. It was probably really bad that his baby didn't have it toward him. Or, Shane is not bonding with his new baby.

  6. Ilya Hollander (Mila's Dad) [2:18pm]:
Are you free tomorrow? Mila is very excited for Maddie to come over

    Bring your Centaurs fan husband!

The minivan is the first thing Jane notices when they pull up the Hollanders' driveway.

“See?” she says pointedly to her husband. “They drive a normal car.”

“Janie, that’s a ninety-thousand dollar minivan,” Chris says. He puts the car in park; he’s been nervous since they left the house, but he’d never say so.

“You need to relax,” Jane laughs. “They’re just two nice, normal dads, who invited us over so our kids can play hockey.”

“Yeah, just normal, millionaire dads with like, seven Stanley Cups between them–”

Jane cuts him off. “You know how hard it’s been to make friends with some of the hockey parents here. These guys are nice! And the girls get along so well!” She points a finger at her husband’s face and lowers her voice. “Don’t screw this up for her.”

  7. "Papa just needs to give Daddy a bandaid. He has a small ouchie." "Ouchie?" "Just a little, itty bitty one." Or maybe his brain was hemorrhaging, but Ilya tried hard to shove that thought down. Mila frowned. "I wanna give Daddy a bandaid." "This is a special bandaid only Papa can give," Ilya said, thinking rapidly and coming up with very little. "You can give him a special Mila-only bandaid when we see him later. Okay?" Mila nodded slowly. She swallowed her fruit snacks and looked at Ilya in the mirror. "You have to ‘member to kiss his ouchie, Papa." Ilya reached his hand back between the seats and held it there until her small fingers wrapped around his. "I will kiss Daddy's ouchie." Or, Shane gets injured during practice. It is, to put mildly, a lot for his very attached husband and children to handle.

  8. Ilya's smile widened. He started fumbling with the buttons on his shirt with one hand, squinting down at them. "Please don't strip in front of this bar." "'s too hot," he muttered. "Stupid humid Florida. Was nice in the morning. Now I miss my dreary Canada." "Well, don't worry. It's waiting for you. All 10 degrees of it." "With you there, you make it 10 degrees hotter." He tried for a wink. It didn't fully land. Shane really wanted to kiss him. "Okay, Romeo." Ilya is out of town celebrating Svetlana's birthday, leaving Shane to parent the kids by himself for the weekend. How hard can it be.

  9. “They need to return to a conference based system,” Svetlana said, slamming her hand against the table. “It was fucking fine the way it was, why are we handing out participation trophies to shitty divisions?”

Ilya raised his eyebrows from where he hovered in the kitchen, cracking open another Red Bull.

“This is fun,” he said, deadpanned. “You guys should start a podcast or something. I would not listen, you are both terribly boring.”

Or, after an injury on the ice forces Shane into an early retirement, he and Svetlana start a podcast.

  10. Ilya ignored the request from the NHL twice. The first time they asked through his agent, the second time the director of marketing called his personal number directly. He never got along with the league as a player, and he certainly didn't need to make them happy now.

The next attempt to reach him was harder to ignore. A phone call from an unknown number. A voicemail that made his blood run cold.

"Hi Ilya. This is Rose Landry. We've never met, but Shane speaks so highly of you. I think the NHL has been trying to get in touch. Shane said you probably wouldn't talk to them. But...think about it, ok? I know it would mean a lot to him."

The final request crumbled his resolve. The caller ID blinked "Jane," and Ilya stared at it.

  11. Ilya had never really let himself picture it before. Not for too long, anyway. Himself at twelve, standing in that doorway, seeing her lifeless body on the bed. He didn’t have any photographs of himself from that age, which made it easier to keep the memory at a distance. Just a fact. Something that happened to a version of himself he barely remembered being. Niko turning twelve closed that distance. Ilya is going through a depressive episode. Which is hitting differently now that his son is the same age he was when his mom died.

  12. "Aren't I so lucky," he said, tilting his head back to look up at Shane. "I have very sexy cougar as my husband." "We're the same age," Shane reminded him, thumb tracing Ilya's jaw. "Not true." Ilya shifted forward on his knees until he was settled between Shane's legs, his hands coming up to cup Shane's stomach. "For the next month, I have a sugar daddy." Shane laughed. "So now I'm some old man buying you gifts?" "Well," Ilya said, pressing a kiss to the curve of Shane's stomach through his shirt. Then another. "You are old man. And you are giving me the most precious gift of all. So yes. Is accurate, I would say." 5 times Ilya and their kids took care of Shane throughout his pregnancy, and 1 time they were reminded just how stubborn Shane Hollander can be.

  13. There were many things about Shane's upbringing in Canada that Ilya found hard to understand. Like why he insisted on hiking into the brush to find the "perfect" marshmallow sticks for a bonfire. To Ilya, it seemed like a lot of unnecessary effort and a high risk of mosquito bites when they could just buy a pack of skewers and be done with it. But, like with everything that came with Shane Hollander, Ilya had learned to love it. And now here he was, years later, the one leading Shane and their kids through the woods behind the cottage on this warm summer evening. Or, Shane and Ilya take their kids on a weekend getaway to the cottage.

  14. Shane came through the door with four cases of Pedialyte stacked in his arms. Ilya had asked him to pick up one on the way home. One. "Last time Niko had the flu, he liked the grape one best," Shane said, studying the cases with his brow furrowed. "But that was over a year ago. And his favorite Gatorade flavor right now is lemon-lime, so I figured it'd be safer just to get a variety pack—" Ilya stood beside him and watched him unload the cases. There were times—many times —when Ilya's feeling of endearment toward Shane was so overwhelming, so consuming, that the only way he could describe it was that he wanted to crawl inside his skin and live there. He settled for stepping in close and pressing a kiss to Shane's temple instead. Or, The flu sweeps through the Hollander–Rozanov household. Just as Shane thinks he's the last man standing, he goes down hard.

  15. "When did you guys fall in love?" "Guys," their teacher warned. "That's not a question about their careers." Ilya was already looking at him when Shane glanced over, wearing that stupidly fond smile. Shane felt his own lips twitch in response before he could help it. "Is very good question, actually," Ilya announced to the room. "Hard to say exact moment." He tilted his head. "But pretty fast, I think." Shane's chest clenched. The classroom full of nine-year-olds dissolved. Max's mortification somewhere in the background didn't register. For a moment, Shane was seventeen years old again, watching Ilya Rozanov highlights for the tenth time that week and running out of ways to explain why. "Yeah," Shane said, voice catching slightly. "Pretty fast." Shane and Ilya attend career day at their son's elementary school. It ends with Shane going off on another parent and embarrassing their son.

  16. Ilya rubbed at his face with both hands, trying to knead the heaviness away. It didn’t budge. Probably just caught something from the kids, he thought to himself. Some kind of virus. Except he'd been feeling like this for weeks now. Maybe longer. It was hard to tell. The days blurred when you were tired, and he’d been tired for longer than he wanted to admit. Maybe it was something still lingering in his system. That happened sometimes, right? Viruses could hang around. He'd read that somewhere. Post-viral fatigue. Yeah. That was probably it. Some dormant virus still working its way out of him. Or, Ilya and Shane are married with kids, living the life they fought for. But Ilya's depression is rearing its ugly head again.

  17. "You are calling your sister liar?" he asked. "On her recital day? On International Women's Day?" Niko just glared at him, while Max snickered behind the pages of his book. "Everyone has a mad voice," Ilya said wisely, reaching for a fresh bobby pin. He gathered up the loose strand that had slipped free and started over, completely unruffled by the looming deadline. "You get yours from your dad." "I don't have a mad voice." The statement came from the doorway. Shane stood there holding Mila's tiny pink cardigan—the one with the pearl buttons that perfectly matched her leotard—draped over one arm. He was fully dressed now, ready to go. White dress shirt tucked in, navy tie perfectly straight, the silver tie clip Ilya had given him years back catching the morning light streaming through the window. Nobody responded. They all knew better. Or, Ilya and Shane's daughter's first ballet recital happens to fall on International Women's Day. A holiday that Ilya takes very seriously.

  18. Shane's eyes burned. "What if I hadn't noticed?" "But you did." "But what if I hadn't?" Ilya pulled Shane against his chest, wrapping his arms around him. "You would have. Because you are Shane Hollander. When Shane Hollander has goal—like goal to keep our baby safe—nothing gets past him." He pressed a kiss to Shane's temple. "Is blessing and curse, yes? But mostly blessing." Or, 3 times Shane's hypervigilance caught something wrong with their kids before anyone else did, and 1 time Ilya had to confiscate his laptop.

  20. There had been so many moments growing up when Ilya was certain Alexei wanted him dead. Or at least hurt him badly enough that the message would stick. Sometimes it wasn't even from their physical fights. Sometimes it was just from the way Alexei looked at him. With that particular expression of pure disdain. Like Ilya's very existence was an offense Alexei had to endure. Maybe that's how Max and Niko were starting to see each other now. Maybe this was how it started. Or, Shane and Ilya's sons get into a physical fight, and it drags up memories Ilya thought he’d left behind.
