Katya rolls her eyes at him as she pushes inside.
"Not everyone can get a million dollar hockey contract at 18."
"We should have bought her an apartment," Ilya says, turning to Shane.
"The website said they encourage people to live on campus for at least their first year. It's easier to make friends!"
Or, Katya Hollander-Rozanov is moving into her dorm at McGill. No one is handling it particularly well, but they're trying.

And while Ilya knows he’d fall in love with every single version, he’s happy he gets this one. Happy he gets the Shane who lets himself be trusting, and vulnerable, and honest. It makes Ilya wish he could have loved Shane earlier - makes him wish he could have known him longer. But he’s just glad he gets to do it now, here, like this. (Or, four times people are surprised by Shane’s clinginess, and one time they completely expect it.)

Yuna Hollander answers on the second ring. “Hi sweetheart.” “Hey.” He tries to keep his voice even and calm, rather than panicked and uneasy, which is how he feels. “Have you heard from Shane?” “Shane? No, not since this morning. Why?” “I-” Ilya hesitates very briefly, sure suddenly that he is overreacting. “If the plums are good, we will get them,” he assures her and she smiles in relief. “Kay Daddy.” She goes back to looking at the numerous, colorful brands of cereal around them in the aisle. Shane sighs, one hand pressed against the underside of his swollen belly as a barrage of movement steals his focus momentarily. He’s so distracted by the movement of their baby within, that it takes him a second to realize the gentle presence of his daughter has disappeared from his side. He turns, so quickly that it makes his hip muscles pull uncomfortably, trying to spot her in the aisle. His heart lodges in his throat when he realizes she is no longer even in the same aisle. “Ren?” he chokes out, feet moving in the direction of the aisle’s edge, hoping to god she’s somewhere extremely nearby and he’s just missing her. The hurried waddle to the end of the aisle feels like it takes an eternity, his heart racing, sweat beading on his forehead, pulse stuttering. Fuck, what is she wearing right now? What color is her shirt? Oh, fuck, what if he has to tell the police what she was last seen in? What if he- what if she’s- -aka a pregnant shane has a scary day with their older daughter-

Shane and Ilya are both forty-five years old, and they have such full lives that sometimes time feels like a cruel joke. They’re busy, and always on the go, and blindingly happy. Shane tells himself this is why it takes him so long to realize. That lately, Ilya’s gone quieter during their evening nighttime routine before bed. When they shower and brush their teeth, Shane meticulously flossing between each molar while Ilya sort of haphazardly takes care of his own business, that Ilya doesn’t joke or laugh as much as usual. When they shower, he lets Shane get out first every time, and spends a little extra moment to himself.
