  1. After spending an embarrassing amount of time researching baseball, I came to a realization: if Shane isn't playing hockey, then baseball is absolutely his next great love. It's a sport with one of the largest percentages of Asian players among the major North American leagues, and one that lets him push himself to the absolute limit as a rare two-way player. Honestly, what more could Shane ask for?

Yuri, from Tadaima, Okaeri, is back! This time, she's the daughter of Alpha!Ilya and Omega!Shane, who are now captains of the Boston Bears and the Boston Red Sox, respectively.

I really hope you'll enjoy Out of Left Field. ❤️

  2. There was something wrong with Shane Hollander.

He had known it since he was young.

Most people-most kids, in general-had different hobbies and interests. Their attention drifted from one thing to another. They became fascinated with something for a few weeks, only to abandon it for the next shiny obsession that caught their eye.

Shane had never been like that.

When it came to him, there was only ever one thing: hockey.

    Obsessive.

That was the word most people used when referring to his temperament.

  3. "Come in.” the boy says impatiently, his Russian enviably flawless.

“Sorry.” Shane mutters back. He’s still working on his vocabulary, but years of listening to Ilya muttering in Russian whenever they were together has given him a pretty good ear for the accent.

“You speak Russian?” the boy demands in rapid Russian. “Do you know what’s going on? Where am I? Where’s my Mama? Who is this fucker?”

“Slowly, please. I am learning. Say it again, please.” Shane replies with deliberate care, stepping into the hotel room and closing the door. “And don’t say fucker.”

  4. Ilya had never really let himself picture it before. Not for too long, anyway. Himself at twelve, standing in that doorway, seeing her lifeless body on the bed. He didn’t have any photographs of himself from that age, which made it easier to keep the memory at a distance. Just a fact. Something that happened to a version of himself he barely remembered being. Niko turning twelve closed that distance. Ilya is going through a depressive episode. Which is hitting differently now that his son is the same age he was when his mom died.

  5. Ilya swallows thickly and slowly drags his eyes up to meet Shane’s. “I hurt you. You are bleeding.”

Ilya’s body suddenly feels heavy. He knows it’s his fault. Nothing Shane says will convince him otherwise. Shane may have insisted that it was fine―that Ilya didn’t need to take the time opening him up like he usually did. He’d seemed eager for it too.

“Hey, it’s alright,” Shane says casually. “I’ll do laundry later. It’ll be okay.”

“I don’t care―” Ilya can’t help but say it harshly, “―about the fucking laundry. I care that I hurt you.”

“That’s not-” Shane starts, but he stops himself. Ilya tilts his head slightly in question, but Shane bites the inside of his cheek and then shakes his head slightly, cheeks flushing. “I do trust you,” Shane says.

“But not with your car?” Ilya asks. “You are afraid I will drive all the boring out of it?”

    Shane rolls his eyes.

“It’s a good car-” He starts in another refrain of one of his favorite summer songs.

Ilya rolls them and pins his boyfriend under him before he has to hear about four wheel drive and gas mileage again.

There are far better uses for Shane’s mouth, after all.

  7. Ilya rubbed at his face with both hands, trying to knead the heaviness away. It didn’t budge. Probably just caught something from the kids, he thought to himself. Some kind of virus. Except he'd been feeling like this for weeks now. Maybe longer. It was hard to tell. The days blurred when you were tired, and he’d been tired for longer than he wanted to admit. Maybe it was something still lingering in his system. That happened sometimes, right? Viruses could hang around. He'd read that somewhere. Post-viral fatigue. Yeah. That was probably it. Some dormant virus still working its way out of him. Or, Ilya and Shane are married with kids, living the life they fought for. But Ilya's depression is rearing its ugly head again.

  8. There had been so many moments growing up when Ilya was certain Alexei wanted him dead. Or at least hurt him badly enough that the message would stick. Sometimes it wasn't even from their physical fights. Sometimes it was just from the way Alexei looked at him. With that particular expression of pure disdain. Like Ilya's very existence was an offense Alexei had to endure. Maybe that's how Max and Niko were starting to see each other now. Maybe this was how it started. Or, Shane and Ilya's sons get into a physical fight, and it drags up memories Ilya thought he’d left behind.

  9. Ilya knew sadness could kill, and it could do it quietly like it took his mother. So he stayed charming, desirable, and useful. He never asked for reassurance, didn’t get needy. He would never admit he needed Shane. Right?

  10. Ilya and Shane reflect on the past. OR: Time didn’t quite heal old wounds. Spoilers for The Long Game specifically. But also random spoilers for other books too, probably. I don’t know I read them all at the same time and now my brain can barely differentiate what happened when.

  11. Looking back at it now, how he longed for his own bed, he thought maybe his mother wasn’t lazy at all, but maybe her own mind and heart were just simply too heavy for her to lift. He hoped that practice would help his mood lift, and his medication would kick in. He’d be back to being himself. The rink was cold when Shane and he entered, hand in hand, and the loud chatter of his team immediately made a headache bloom behind his eyes. Ilya is having a bad depression day, but at the end of it all Shane is right there to help him.
