  3. It’s strictly a business trip. Ilya’s her client, not her friend, and they have meetings with Porsche. She’ll probably see him for a few hours here and there, and she’s content to amuse herself for the rest of the time.

Ilya seems to regard her trip differently.

  6. “So. That’s it? Those are the rules?” Hayden asked. “Don’t go through your texts or photos, keep up with your workouts and diet, and listen to everything Yuna says, without question.”

Shane seemed to be thinking about it, pausing a second. All of a sudden, he looked up at Hayden, again with that intense anxiety face.

“And most importantly, do not talk to Ilya Rozanov. Ever. No matter what.” Shane said, “Avoid him. Don’t even look at him. OK?”

Hayden nodded, and resisted the urge to roll his eyes. Like he even needed to be told that. Besides, Shane had been avoiding Ilya Rozanov for his entire career. How hard could it be?

OR a well-meaning witch bodyswaps Shane and Hayden (to teach them about the power of friendship) the day before the 2017 All Stars Game.

  7. And now, as Shane flew down the ice, carrying the puck back and forth with his stick, he found himself enjoying his own breathlessness. He felt his stomach jolt and his hands grow clammy with the excitement of the breakaway. The rink seemed to fade away as he got closer and closer to Toronto’s goalie. He did not see the crowd start to stand, sensing the impending goal. He did not see Montreal’s bench lean further over the boards, praying for the win that would clinch their spot in the cup finals and already imagining the glory of securing another title.

He did not see Todd Masterson.

The Centaurs come to a- given the circumstances- reasonable conclusion. Or: Five times the Centaurs thought Ilya Rozanov was mourning his dead wife, and the one time they discovered his wife was actually Shane Hollander. Shane, for the record, is alive and really confused.

So when Shane starts bringing men over, and Ilya begins to want to bash their fucking heads in, Ilya comes to a startling conclusion: He must be homophobic. (He’s jealous.)

  10. "Hi, solnyshko.” The Russian pet name set a firework off inside Shane's mind as he heard it cooed from behind him. The intonation was just as he remembered, but the voice was much deeper. He turned and felt himself short circuit. It took every ounce of willpower to not let his jaw drop cartoonishly to the floor. Shane would recognize his individual features anywhere, even after 5 years. But it was as if someone had snapped their fingers and the smug, silly Russian boy who had been attached to Shane's hip for 3 summers was transformed into some sort of fucking Adonis right before his eyes. “Ilya-” was all Shane managed before strong arms were wrapped around his waist and lifting him off the ground in a greeting all too familiar from years ago. OR When Shane Hollander & Ilya Rozanov spent their summers as teens in an elite hockey camp, they quickly became inseparable friends. But they lose touch when Shane moves on as a prospect for the NHL and Ilya for the KHL. Years later, Montreal makes a bold move to take the hottest player in the KHL. After hearing of the Russian's reputation, the Montreal Captain is tasked with keeping his old best friend and new teammate out of trouble.

  11. “Shane has boyfriend?"

“Mom thinks so. He’s dodging my texts, but it definitely seems like he’s seeing someone.”

Ilya's whispered "No" was drowned out by a loud snort from another teammate, who said something like, "Good for lil' bro."

Ilya shouldn’t feel like dying. Should have expected this to happen at some point. Deserved it, even. He had been ghosting Shane for months, after all.

In which Ilya knows he's not good enough to be with his best friend's little brother. He spirals over Shane possibly dating someone else nonetheless.

Alternatively, Ilya will always be the one Shane will still run to.

  12. The soundproofing in room 1221 is exactly as bad as Shane fears. He and Rozanov can hear every word as Scott Hunter engages in a deeply depressing annual ritual, and decide offering comfort is more important than keeping things a secret.

It sparks a friendship that ends up changing more than just the trajectory of those three men's lives.

  13. "What are you doing here?"

Ilya looks at him. Shane has not moved from the doorway. He has one hand still on the frame.

"I don't know," Ilya says, which is the truest thing he has said in months.

Shane makes a sound that isn't quite a laugh. "That's not—" He stops. Runs a hand over his face. "You can't be here, Ilya."

The name. Again. Said almost like an accident.

"Why are you here?" he asks instead of responding to that.

    Shane goes still.

"This isn't your place," Ilya says. Carefully. "I mean, you don’t live here. You live somewhere else, a real one, nicer, bigger, or I don’t know because I have never been to it. So why are you in the fuck building at four in the morning?"

Shane's jaw tightens. For a second Ilya thinks he won't answer, that he will turn and go back inside and this will be just another door between them and then Shane says, low and bitten-off: "I come here sometimes."

    "Why?"

    "You know why."

Or, After Shane leaves Ilya in Boston, Ilya becomes a mess and Shane thinks he's ruined everything. They both seek each other silently until they cross paths again. Eventually, someone has to say something.

  15. “Oh my god, oh my god. Seriously, this is the best. I can’t believe you’re my neighbour. I’m calling it now, Hollander. This right here is the beginning of a friendship that will go down in history.” Ilya is 10 years old when his family moves from Jacksonville, Florida to small town Ontario. There, he forms an unexpected friendship with Shane, the boy living on the ginseng farm across the street. As they grow up and grow apart, their paths continue to cross at high school hockey games, in tabloid articles, and at one particular intimate Muskoka cottage. 16. "We're setting you up with a billet situation," Fletcher continued. "It's pretty common for first-year players, especially international guys. Gives you a chance to settle in, learn the city, have someone looking out for you."

"Okay," Ilya said slowly, not entirely sure what a billet was, but not wanting to admit his ignorance.

He could guess from the context – he’d heard of rookies being assigned to live with older single players, veterans who could show them the ropes. Maybe that was what Fletcher meant. Connors maybe, he was probably a handful of years older than Ilya. Or perhaps Becker. Ilya just hoped it was someone who–

"You'll be staying with Nikolai Petrov and his family."

The words hit Ilya like a punch to the gut. For a moment, he forgot how to breathe.

"Petrov?" he managed, his voice coming out strangled.

The Bears decide that Ilya should be set up with a billet for his first season. The idea of spending a year living with a man that Ilya is sure hates him is completely terrifying. And yet, it ends up being the best thing to ever happen to him.

  17. Ilya flirts with danger with the kind of desperation of a man drowning clawing his way to the surface in search of air. He knows it'll catch up with him eventually. He just never imagined it would lead to this: getting traded as if dumped in the trash, like his career achievements, his blood sweat and tears and everything else he's given Boston, mean nothing at all.

Or, when Ilya gets caught in a sex scandal with a man while trying to get over Hollander, he changes the trajectory of his life forever.

  18. “Why did you want me to meet you here today?” Shane asked. When he’d heard the request, he’d had the same thought as Jared. Was he trying to rub it in? One last chance to retaliate for a long ago rejection?

Shane had almost made it to Rozanov’s room that night in the hotel in Toronto. But when the elevator doors opened, Shane’s feet had stayed glued to the ground.

He’d been so afraid of ruining everything, only to have it ruined for him barely a year later.

Shane does not hook up with Ilya in Toronto. Six years later, his hockey career is long over and he has found a new calling that puts his media training, and his pretty face, to good use.

Consider this a remix of sorts.

  20. Ilya has been thinking about his mother again. Not that he ever really stops but lately...Yes, lately he is thinking about Irina Rozanova but also about Irina Sokolova. About Irina before Alexei or Ilya. Before Grigori Rozanov. Irina Sokolova - the champion figure skater. The world championship title she won. The routine she developed and agonised over and perfected but never took to the Olympics.

And he has been doing something stupid. Something he absolutely should not be doing. But he is one year away from reaching an age his mother never got to see and he needs...something. He’s pretty sure it’s this particular something.

But Dr. Galina has been implying that perhaps it is only stupid in the way that falling in love with your arch-rival is stupid. So maybe he should just give up already and get on with it.
