  1. “Shit,” Hunter said, eyes wide. He shot a glance up and down the hallway and held up his hands in the universal sign of “calm down.”
“I can pretend I didn’t see anything,” he said quickly.
“There’s nothing-“ But Shane was losing the ability to speak. His throat was closing up, his vision darkening, his heart feeling like it was being squeezed by barb wire.

What if Scott Hunter caught Shane sneaking out of Ilya's room? What if this change meant Shane had someone to talk to, and then the number of people in his corner kept expanding?

A what-if homophobia can be fixed by a Swedish hockey coach and rational argument. Featuring accidental cock-blocker Hayden, better communication skills, good Montreal team mates, coming outs, drinking games, and canon divergence.

  3. "What are you doing here?"

Ilya looks at him. Shane has not moved from the doorway. He has one hand still on the frame.

"I don't know," Ilya says, which is the truest thing he has said in months.

Shane makes a sound that isn't quite a laugh. "That's not—" He stops. Runs a hand over his face. "You can't be here, Ilya."

The name. Again. Said almost like an accident.

"Why are you here?" he asks instead of responding to that.

    Shane goes still.

"This isn't your place," Ilya says. Carefully. "I mean, you don’t live here. You live somewhere else, a real one, nicer, bigger, or I don’t know because I have never been to it. So why are you in the fuck building at four in the morning?"

Shane's jaw tightens. For a second Ilya thinks he won't answer, that he will turn and go back inside and this will be just another door between them and then Shane says, low and bitten-off: "I come here sometimes."

    "Why?"

    "You know why."

Or, After Shane leaves Ilya in Boston, Ilya becomes a mess and Shane thinks he's ruined everything. They both seek each other silently until they cross paths again. Eventually, someone has to say something.

  4. Ilya Rozanov was an asshole. Everybody knew this. Sometimes, though, secretly, he wasn't.

Or, 4 times strangers were kind to one another, plus a few times Ilya Rozanov started publicly bashing bigots online.

  5. “You are Scott Hunter’s boy, yes?” Hockey Guy asked, and fuck, he was Russian. Not that Kip had anything against Russians, of course, but the chances were that any given Russian in the NHL was not going to be all that friendly to gay people. The only Russian NHL player Kip was at all familiar with was that Rozanov guy from Boston, and based on the “fighter, womanizer, party boy” stories he’d heard about the guy, he was really hoping that he was not the man standing next to him.

“Yeah. That’s me.” Kip confirmed, standing straighter and flashing a tight smile.

Hockey Guy grinned and offered his hand. “Ilya Rozanov. Nice to meet you.”

    God fucking damn it.

Or: During the MLH award ceremony, Kip finds himself having a very interesting conversation with Ilya Rozanov.
