  1. After tuna melts and their first night actually sleeping together, Ilya asks Shane for more. Shane agrees, not knowing that this was Ilya's way of asking him out.

  2. Shane tries not to be disappointed in the way the whole thing has worked out. Because the thing about Rozanov is that his existence is infuriating. And he is so much fun to play against. Shane had almost liked the thought of having a rival and, had the lottery gone a little differently, he and Rozanov would have been drafted to the same division and really delivered on that possibility. They could have really enjoyed it.

As it stands, one of them is going to the southernmost team in the league, and the other is going all the way up North.

    Or-

The draft lottery goes a little differently and suddenly there is no rivalry, no joint CCM campaign, and nothing between Shane and Ilya but a charged encounter in a hotel gym and 4,000 kilometres of distance.

A lot of things are different, and some others are too fated to be ruined by something as immaterial as luck.

  3. After becoming a Boston Raider, Shane was still bracing, waiting for something to go wrong.
Eventually, however, he realizes he doesn’t have to.
Ilya has some feelings about it too.

  4. Shrugging one shoulder far more casually than he possibly feels, Ilya says, “I like both. Is secret, okay?”

    “Okay,” Hollander says, voice cracking.

He doesn’t say anything else. The air’s so heavy around them that it feels like being in the middle of a scrum, the weight and heat of all those bodies pressing down on you. Danger always feels like hockey; it’s the most dangerous thing Ilya knows, except for this. Everything dangerous in his life involves men’s bodies and just how close he can get to them. Closer than he probably should.

A year after mysteriously dropping out of the 2009 draft, Shane Hollander is signed by the Boston Raiders, right behind Ilya Rozanov. Having the two biggest stars in the league on the same line is great for Boston — but playing alongside their worst rival was never exactly in Shane or Ilya's plans. Especially not when staying away from each other starts to feel just as impossible as getting along.

  5. Cardiac tamponade: pressure on that heart that prevents it from filling and beating adequately.

Shane thought he knew two things: his move to Ottawa would cause chaos, and that the Ottawa Centaurs were nice.

As it turned out, he only knew one of those things.

(Or: the Cens are still a team of professional hockey players. They're going to fuck up.)

  6. When Shane Hollander was drafted, he thought he would retire in Montreal with a C on his chest. A decade later, he understands that dream was never possible. This is the story of everything that happens in between.

  7. "Oh my God, what?" Shane demands, nervous now.
Ilya swears in Russian again. "Is, um. The condom."
    Fuck. "What about the condom?"
"On porvalysa," he says, like he can't fucking bring himself to say it in a language that Shane can understand. Then he finally looks at Shane, mouth covered like he's a cowering dog afraid to show Shane his teeth. "It broke."

Ilya Rozanov and Shane Hollander are twenty, on top of the world, and a little irresponsible about it. This is the crash.

  8. Shane Hollander, Ottawa Centaur, is struggling to settle into his new team. He also has more support than he knows.

    Or

Five times the Centaurs noticed something was off and one time they did something about it.

  9. “Why are you here?”

“You see,” Rozanov drawls, “twenty-two years ago, my parents decide they fuck and –”

“Ugh. Shut up.” Shane scowls. “No, I mean – why here?” why now?

The smirk slides off Rozanov’s face. “They want –” he swallows, bringing one arm up to drape over his eyes. “The team I play for. During lockout. They… disagree about rest of season. Tell me I stay.”

    “But they can’t do that!”

Rozanov gives him a sardonic smirk.

When Rozanov’s Russian team doesn’t want to let him return to the MLH after the 2012-13 lockout, Shane finds himself pulled into a harebrained scheme to make sure his rival is safe – and it might just work. Now he only has to navigate a secret pretend relationship while also facing the condensed MLH season. But needs must, right?
