The photos leak on a Wednesday. Ilya sets his life and career on fire on Sunday, mostly out of spite. On Monday, he is the first out queer player in the NHL.
Nobody handles the ensuing circus well, least of all Scott Hunter.

Aleksei is seven when his father remarries. He is nine when Yulia is born.
If things had been a little different, he would have hated her. He was prone to envy at that stage: restless, anxious, without purpose. Jealousy would have eaten him through and left room for something uglier to move in. It doesn’t, because Yulia loves him first.
Aleksei is nine and furious at the world, and he doesn’t stand a chance. His heart cracks, breaks and swallows her whole.

The woman had her hair tucked under a knit hat, and her eyes were actually kind.
"You are cold," she said.
"I'm fine," Shane said. His teeth betrayed him with a chatter.
She unwound her scarf from her own neck and wrapped it around his.
Eight-year-old Shane goes to a hockey camp in Moscow, becomes a victim to language barrier, and gets rescued by a woman who gives him her scarf and tells him snow angels are real.
Eighteen years later, Ilya finds out his mother had already met the love of his life.

Breaking the Cycle by TheOceanIsMyInkwell

When Shane was freshly sixteen, Yuna came home to find him freaking out by himself at the kitchen island. He was perched on one of the bar stools with his entire torso slumped across the counter and his arms extended in front of him, hands balled into fists on the granite. His head was buried between his shoulders and he didn’t sound like he was breathing. Yuna didn’t say anything for a solid thirty seconds. Alarms blaring in her head, she silently tossed her purse to the side and beelined for her son with her hands out to comfort him. --- Or: Five times Yuna suspected Shane was gay, and the one time she finally found the right words to say.

“Ilya Rozanov,” Shane repeats slowly, letting himself taste the words. He grins. “Wow. You’re, like, a really good player. How come you’re in Canada for summer camp? Is that weird to ask? Sorry if that’s weird. I just meant-” Shane is cut off by a hand on his mouth. He flushes. “Too fast,” Ilya says. “My English… not good.” “Sorry,” Shane mumbles into Ilya’s hand. Ilya grins and shakes his head, curls dancing, as he pulls his hand away. “Is okay. Slow words. Okay?” This year marks thirteen year Shane Hollander's third summer at Coach Marakov's elite hockey training camp. In attendance for the first time: Ilya Rozanov, visiting from Russia. Shane isn't the most sociable, and Ilya's English isn't the greatest, yet the unlikely duo soon become the best of friends. It's just one summer, but it makes a world of difference.
