  1. "If you need a cat, and you deserve a cat, the universe will make sure that a cat finds you. That's the Cat Distribution System at work," the woman explains.

"But I don't need a cat," Shane says, baffled.

"Are you sure?" the bearded guy says, looking down at the box, where Shane is still stroking the kitten's head.

"Yes?" Shane says, frowning as the kitten rubs its small, bewhiskered cheek against his finger.

Shane finds a stray kitten; Ilya not so slowly loses his mind.

  3. “I don’t want to look at you right now.” Ilya’s voice is raw but firm. “I don’t want to talk to you. Go home.” Leaving the towel bunched up on the counter, he tries to leave. No fucking way. Shane steps into his path and stops him. There is no way he’s letting Ilya walk away like that. And why the fuck is Ilya the one who is upset? He’s the one who brought up that stupid party in the first place. And he’s the one who can’t answer one fucking question. “Would you choose me?” Shane discovers how tired Ilya is of hiding and how much it hurts him that no one knows. Shane also discovers that he’s the asshole in this scenario and decides to change that, fuck the consequences. He can panic about it another day.

  4. "Yeah, um. Thanks, I guess." Hollander's reply was vacant, and Ilya moved to gather his clothes and pull his boxers on, taking care to keep his movements smooth and casual. He had to get away. Now. Before he did or said something unfortunate. One word from Hollander, naked on the edge of the bed, derailed his plans. "Wait," Hollander pleaded, and there was something undeniably vulnerable in his voice. Ilya hesitated immediately, turned back to the bed. "Hollander?" --- Hotel room 1822 in Montreal, February 2011. What if Ilya did stay a little longer?
