Ilya Rozanov has been drafted by Boston, the number one pick overall, but his father doesn't want him moving to America and so takes steps to block his visa. He's going to have to go back to Russia and stay there forever and that, thinks Shane Hollander, is wrong.
It's so wrong that Shane can't stop himself from doing something about it. Even though that something is the most reckless, the only reckless thing he's ever done in his life. He marries Rozanov in secret, to keep him out of Russia and put him on a path to Canadian citizenship.
Shane's got a five-year plan to get him there and when you have a plan nothing can go wrong. Right? Right. When you have a solid plan and a marriage that's on paper only there's no risk of feelings getting involved. Not on Rozanov's part and certainly not on Shane's.

Nowadays Shane has many, many plans, between his nightly plans to look at Ilya’s penis through Skype and his various long-term plans laid out helpfully in his notebook, Canva (For Ilya’s sake. He is a visual learner), and more recently, Excel. Shane loves that excel sheet. He’s colour coded it.
In 2017, Shane Hollander spirals and proposes to his boyfriend of 4 days (or 7 years, or 9 years, or not his boyfriend at all, depending on how you look at it), which leads to a lot of plans, weird theories in the Montreal Voyageur locker room, some Twitter drama, and Ilya Rozanov entering his WAG era.

A harmless drinking game at Bood's barbecue causes secrets about a certain relationship to be revealed by accident. In the summer of 2017 Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov started officially dating. A the start of the summer 2018 Ilya Rozanov's trade to the Ottawa Centaurs was confirmed and released to the public. The news was released to the public when the Centaurs were having a barbecue shocking the whole team. No one knew why the captain of the Boston Bears had been traded to Ottawa, a team with no prospects of winning. Even after his first year no one had a clue why he was traded or even considered for a trade. At the start of the 2018 season Shane came out to his teamates, and ended up being singled out for the rest of the season. After long discussions with Ilya he decided to waive his no trade clause and be traded back to his home town of Ottawa and play alongside Ilya. His trade was released during the summer of 2019. Even more people began questioning the recent trades to Ottawa. Even the team began questioning what would happen between the two due to their rivalry. During the summer of 2019 Ilya and Shane held a private ceremony at their cottage with Yuna, David, Rose, Hayden and the Pikes family as their witnesses. Their private ceremony showed cemented their relationship and their love for one another and they got ready to began another terrific season. The first day of training camp the team was anticipating their captains reaction to Shane having traded to their team. They all watched in anticipation for Ilya's first interaction with Shane, but rather than the huge fight that they expected they stood there shocked at how polite their captain was towards his rival. No one on the team ever expected the two rivals to work so well together on the ice. They worked together on the ice as if they shared one brain and the teams wins increased. One day after practice Dykstra exclaimed "you're all coming round this weekend for a barbecue, no excuses" then he turned pointedly towards Hollander "especially both of you". That weekend everyone attended the barbecue. As the day was ending and the night one of the rookies decided what a great idea it was to play never have i ever. Ilya of course thought it was such a great idea and agreed that they should all play. As the game went on less and less remained playing until it was just Haas, Dykstra, Hayes, Hollander, Rozanov, Barrett, Harris Cassie, Lisa and Caitlin who remained. Harris decided to say "never have I ever drove more than 2 hours for a hookup", to which many of the players drank and reluctanly so did Hollander, which shocked the rest of the group apart from Ilya who was hiding his grin beneath his hand. The game continued until Bood decided to target Harris and the wives by saying "never have I ever slept with a hockey player". Shane and Ilya both knew that they could lie and not drink but they both looked directly at each other and decided to drink. The whole group looked at the two quizzically, then Bood said "I only meant MHL players, not other hockey players" as the others continued to stare at them. But then Ilya broke the silence by saying "wouldn't matter we'd still have to drink", which shocked the group even more. They did their best not to ask too many questions as they waited for either Shane or Ilya to expand on what had just been said. And soon enough they got the answers they were looking for. As the rest if the group were gaping at Shane and Ilya Shane decided to say "didn't you guys know me and Ilya are married." Chaos followed. No one was making sense until Wyatt exclaimed " THE RINGS? THATS WHAT THE RINGS ARE FOR. OMG how did I miss this, I'm a goalie I am meant to watch people." Then Troy exclaimed "what do you mean rings". In response Ilya and Shane at almost the same time pulled out their chains hidden under their tops showing off their matching rings. "OMG, is this actually real" Haas with a confused expression on his face as he began saying "how long has this been going on" to which Shane responded "do you seriously think we'd lie about this." "How long has this been going on" Harris asked trying to piece together what had just been revealed. The whole group then looked at them with expecting faces waiting for the answer. The Ilya suprised everyone saying "we've been together since rookie season" "summer before" Shane interupted with a pleased grin on his face, the Ilya continued "but we've been exclusive since summer of 2017 and married since summer of 2019" he said as he waited for chaos to follow. "My mind is blown, the whole time you've been in the league" Dykstra said with a shocked face remaining on his face. Then Wyatt exclaimed again "WAIT is this why we've never been to your houses, is it because you two live together" to why Ilya smugly responded "of course we live together we are married after all." "Sorry, we literally didn't know you guys were married or even together until 2 minutes ago" Barrett responded with sarcastically. "Is this why you both moved to Ottawa" Haas asked to which was responded with an "of course" from Ilya. The Shane and Ilya shared a look and both quickly stood saying "well it's getting late and we've got practice tomorrow so I think it's time to go. See you all tomorrow at practice" before they quickly rushed out leaving the rest of the group with even more questions than they had started with. Troy turned to the group and said "we're asking them more questions tomorrow right" to which was responded with a resounding "yes". The next day at practice, when Shane and Ilya arrived Hayes, Haas, Dykstra and Barrett all looked towards them eagerly awaiting answers. All while Chouinard stood looking quizzical at the interaction between his teamates.

Shane Hollander was good at keeping secrets. He’d been keeping a pretty big one for over ten years and nobody had found out about it that he hadn’t wanted to. The secret in question of course was that he was married to his arch-rival on the ice, Ilya Rozanov. In which Ilya takes a hit on the ice and Shane is forced to tell hosptial staff that he's his husband in order to see him, thus outing their big secret.
