  1. A fiery plane crash claims Ilya Rozanov’s life in January. By April, Shane Hollander is dead of a broken heart. The truth dies with them.

Yuna Hollander will do anything to get her son back, including hiring a shady shaman to resurrect him. There’s just one complication — Shane isn’t coming back alone.

Now there are codependent (not)zombies in her house wearing Ilya and Shane’s faces. When they inexplicably act more like a married couple than the bitter rivals she expected, Yuna is convinced that they came back wrong.

It’s easier than admitting she never understood them from the start.

  2. He could still feel it now, the warm-wet slide of Ilya's tongue as he licked a stripe from the sensitive skin on Shane's palm to the tip of his middle finger, shocking a laugh out of him. The head-rush of feeling how quickly his cock hardened against the warmth of Ilya's bare ass, Ilya's full weight bearing down on Shane's hips. The heat of the blush traveling from his cheeks all the way down to his chest in response to the smoulder in Ilya's eyes.

Мой любимый, this is excuse to put sunscreen on my naked body, yes?

Shane gnawed at the memories like a dog with a bone, allowed himself to get lost in them until he felt physically sick, at which point he realized that he needed to switch lanes to avoid hitting the fawn, still unmoving, still unblinking.

After the Raiders v. Metros accident, Shane comes back different.

  3. A guard dog's submission isn't weakness — it's a whole ecosystem built around one animal's safety. Shane learns the shape of it slowly: which hunger to feed, which to starve, when stillness is the only right shape for his own strength to take. Ilya learns something rarer — that being watched doesn't have to mean being hunted. Then it breaks all at once: something Shane's own teammates were never meant to find finds its way into their locker room anyway, and the appetite that spent a year holding itself in check finds out exactly what it was protecting.

  4. “You speak Russian?” Ilya’s voice is simultaneously incredulous and thrilled, like he can’t quite believe it, but he’s excited all the same.

Hayden shakes his head, shrugging, still rocking Amber. “Uh, not really? I only know a few words and phrases here and there from my Deda and Baba. I understand it more than I can speak it.”

Ilya’s eyes somehow get wider. “Deda and Baba- You have Russian grandparents? You are Russian?!”

    “I guess? Technically?”

    -

Hayden Pike never really talks about his mom's family. Ilya finds out why and decides he simply *must* fix this.

He is going to teach Hayden Pike how to be Russian, whether Hayden likes it or not.

  5. According to widespread folklore, a red cardinal is a spiritual messenger or a sign that a deceased loved one is near.

Snow has been falling since late afternoon the day before and has only just stopped, from what Ilya can tell anyway. The whole house is quiet beneath the blanket of snow. It feels so empty and he would feel lonely if he wasn't so fucking happy to be away from Andrei and The Colonel.

    And he's not alone, anyway.

Because there is a red something just outside.

    ___

Ilya keeps seeing cardinals when needs them most.

  6. “Hi Milana,” he murmured, voice gentle. “I’m Ilya, your father’s brother. Did your mama tell you I was coming over?”

Milana nodded and pulled her bottom lip into her mouth, gaze contemplative as Ilya held out a hand to her. He didn’t touch her, didn’t broach the barrier of the doorframe, just held his palm out, a gesture of vulnerability, exposing soft skin. When he’d been a child, listening out for the sound of his father’s footfalls down the hall, trying to guess at what mood the man was in that day, if today was a day he would likely be hit, those gestures of vulnerability–upturned palms, tears on cheeks–had been the only thing he’d trusted. The wounded animal in his sternum reaching out for comfort, seeking safety in the fragility of others. Proof that he wasn’t the weakest one.

Or: After spending Christmas with the Hollanders Ilya realises he has unfinished business in Moscow; namely, saying goodbye to his mother's grave and recovering the pieces of his history. Before meeting Shane at the cottage for their second summer together - and before upending his life and moving to another country once again - Ilya decides to return to his home city and attempt to lay his past to rest.

  7. Hayden Pike's mother left when he was seven. She didn't come back. This, really, was not important, because Hayden built a family and a life and was happy - until it was important, when Laura Newfield (formerly Pike) reached out with a letter and an address. For Hayden, the question was whether whatever his mom had to say to him after all this time could tell him something about the parts of himself that he didn't quite understand and had never wanted to understand. How this ended up with him and Ilya Rozanov on the road to find these answers together, he wasn't entirely sure.

or - Hayden goes on an odyssey of exploring his relationship with his mother, with Ilya as his guide.

  8. And now, as Shane flew down the ice, carrying the puck back and forth with his stick, he found himself enjoying his own breathlessness. He felt his stomach jolt and his hands grow clammy with the excitement of the breakaway. The rink seemed to fade away as he got closer and closer to Toronto’s goalie. He did not see the crowd start to stand, sensing the impending goal. He did not see Montreal’s bench lean further over the boards, praying for the win that would clinch their spot in the cup finals and already imagining the glory of securing another title.

He did not see Todd Masterson.

After Shane Hollander dies during the playoffs, Ilya Rozanov drives to Montreal looking for the pieces of him that are still left behind.

  9. In 2016, Shane walked out of Ilya's life and never looked back.

In 2017, Ilya poured gasoline all over his career, struck a match, and walked away from the ashes.

In 2026, their paths cross again at the scene of a car accident that kills Shane’s wife Rose and injures both Shane and his 4 year old daughter, Sophie.

Suddenly, the quiet, unassuming life that Ilya has worked so hard to build for himself crumbles as he confronts the fact that he's never gotten over Shane Hollander.

  10. He figures Ilya would be pretty surprised if he showed up to his house out of the blue. Surprised enough to be put off, probably. Shane is way too bad of a liar to think of any plausible excuse. If this is really happening, if Shane is actually by some miracle getting another shot at this, then he’s going to have to play this smart. His impatience to see Ilya again will have to be tempered. He’s not sure how time travel works, but he has the sneaking suspicion that one wrong move could unravel everything.

    Ilya is alive.

Just the thought of it is enough to make Shane crack his first smile in a year.

When faced with the opportunity to do it right this time, and keep Ilya for good, Shane knows that every decision he makes will be crucial. It's terrifying, but Ilya once told him that he's brave. Now it's up to Shane to prove it.

  12. Ilya has been thinking about his mother again. Not that he ever really stops but lately...Yes, lately he is thinking about Irina Rozanova but also about Irina Sokolova. About Irina before Alexei or Ilya. Before Grigori Rozanov. Irina Sokolova - the champion figure skater. The world championship title she won. The routine she developed and agonised over and perfected but never took to the Olympics.

And he has been doing something stupid. Something he absolutely should not be doing. But he is one year away from reaching an age his mother never got to see and he needs...something. He’s pretty sure it’s this particular something.

But Dr. Galina has been implying that perhaps it is only stupid in the way that falling in love with your arch-rival is stupid. So maybe he should just give up already and get on with it.

  13. Shane is in the front pew. His face is—Ilya does not have words for what Shane's face is doing. He has seen Shane angry and afraid and exhausted and soft and undone. He has never seen this. This is something below all of those things, something that lives at the very bottom of a person, that surfaces only when the thing above it has given way.

This is what it looks like when Shane has nothing left to manage.

    Ilya reaches for him.

    His hand passes through air.

  16. ~And from your lips, he drew the Hallelujah

Ilya Rozanov leaves Boston and signs with Ottawa, trying to fight a slow slide into emptiness and find meaning in his life again. Shane Hollander is a lonely, struggling artist who lost his spark. When they meet by chance, they both have to decide what's worth living for.

Or…Shane never gets the chance to become a pro hockey player, so they meet later in life. Basically, they’re both sad boys, but the healing will be worth it (mostly soft fluff, very low angst). More baggage, fewer hangups.

~You see I used to live alone before I knew ya.

    ——————————————————

“So maybe we would have played together,” Ilya said.

“Yeah. Maybe we would have been rivals,” Shane said, and that got a grin out of him. He couldn’t quite imagine it, but he thought that would have been fun, facing off against Ilya Rozanov. In another life.

Ilya nodded slowly. “And yet here we are, meeting anyway. Maybe we were meant to.”

Some things, it turns out, are inevitable. The question is whether he is.

“Shane?” Ilya dropped down beside him instantly, panic flooding his voice. “Shane! l’ubímyj? What is happening? What did she say?”

Shane couldn’t breathe. He couldn’t think. His brain repeating it over and over and over again.

    Gone.

The word echoed, hollow and impossible.

    “I-it’s - fuck. M-My dad…” he choked out. “He- he’s-”

    Or…

Shane finds out he is pregnant with his and Ilya’s first baby the same day his dad unexpectedly passes away.
