  1. When it happens the puck has just left his stick.

It's a clean hit, but Shane takes it horribly, crumbling on impact and colliding with the boards. While he tries valiantly to keep his head up, he feels himself slide sideways and his last fully coherent thought occurs as his head cracks against both the ice and the bottom edge of the boards.

Immediately, the arena starts to wilt.

“… We just want a future.”

“I have only been in love with one person…”

Shane falls backwards and sinks, the ice turning to water beneath him.

“Holy shit. I love you too…”

    “I love you…”

The words—memories?— are swimming amongst him, angled and distorted; they consume him, they’re are all he can process, even as someone else—a medic, maybe?— on the periphery now, says, "Just stay still Hollander."

  3. Ilya Rozanov has been drafted by Boston, the number one pick overall, but his father doesn't want him moving to America and so takes steps to block his visa. He's going to have to go back to Russia and stay there forever and that, thinks Shane Hollander, is wrong.

It's so wrong that Shane can't stop himself from doing something about it. Even though that something is the most reckless, the only reckless thing he's ever done in his life. He marries Rozanov in secret, to keep him out of Russia and put him on a path to Canadian citizenship.

Shane's got a five-year plan to get him there and when you have a plan nothing can go wrong. Right? Right. When you have a solid plan and a marriage that's on paper only there's no risk of feelings getting involved. Not on Rozanov's part and certainly not on Shane's.

    Right???

  6. After a viral photo outs Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov while they're still busy pretending their years-long situationship is mostly just sex, the fallout gets complicated fast. The world reacts badly. Their teams react worse. Ilya's future in North America starts to look alarmingly fragile, and Shane, who has never met a disaster he didn't try to control into submission, throws himself into fixing what can still be fixed.

Ilya has spent his whole life being wanted for the wrong reasons and discarded for the right ones. Shane has spent his whole life believing that if he is careful enough, good enough, controlled enough, he can keep disaster from reaching the people he loves.

A practical solution emerges, then a house, then rings.

Somehow, by the time they say their vows, both of them are certain they are the only one who means them.

  7. Ilya's father wakes him at four in the morning to tell him that he never had dementia, and that Ilya must leave Russia, right now, permanently. Forty-something hours later Ilya is standing in a township office in rural Ontario, marrying Shane Hollander for citizenship. Everything after that — the lawyer, the joint account, the wills, the drive up to the cottage — was never part of the plan.

Alternatively: In the summer of 2016, Ilya must flee Russia, never to return. Shane makes a brilliant plan: marry Ilya to get him Canadian citizenship. It’s only after the wedding that they realize citizenship law doesn’t really work that way.

Alternatively x 2: My inversion of the “married for citizenship” trope.

  8. “Honestly, dude, you’re fucking handling this like a champ.”
He’s not. He’s handling it the way he has to, the only way there is to handle it. “Well, I am champ, so.”
    Marlow chuckles.
He sounds like he’s about to say something else heartfelt and misinformed, so Ilya flicks on the radio.

  9. In 2016, Shane walked out of Ilya's life and never looked back.

In 2017, Ilya poured gasoline all over his career, struck a match, and walked away from the ashes.

In 2026, their paths cross again at the scene of a car accident that kills Shane’s wife Rose and injures both Shane and his 4 year old daughter, Sophie.

Suddenly, the quiet, unassuming life that Ilya has worked so hard to build for himself crumbles as he confronts the fact that he's never gotten over Shane Hollander.

Shane has a different suggestion out of the dilemma of their situation – one that takes Ilya a little while to wrap his head around. And yet, it turns out that there’s things within his reach that he never knew he could dream of.

  13. “Why are you here?”

“You see,” Rozanov drawls, “twenty-two years ago, my parents decide they fuck and –”

“Ugh. Shut up.” Shane scowls. “No, I mean – why here?” why now?

The smirk slides off Rozanov’s face. “They want –” he swallows, bringing one arm up to drape over his eyes. “The team I play for. During lockout. They… disagree about rest of season. Tell me I stay.”

    “But they can’t do that!”

Rozanov gives him a sardonic smirk.

When Rozanov’s Russian team doesn’t want to let him return to the MLH after the 2012-13 lockout, Shane finds himself pulled into a harebrained scheme to make sure his rival is safe – and it might just work. Now he only has to navigate a secret pretend relationship while also facing the condensed MLH season. But needs must, right?

  14. Ilya’s dad dies right before the 2017 All-Star Game, so he never learns that Shane and Rose broke up. While he’s in Russia, a threat from his brother makes him ask Svetlana for help and marry her so he can get a US green card—it’s meant to be a discreet, simple thing, but the Boston tabloids get a hold of it and then it’s all over social media. Three months later, Shane Hollander holds a press conference to share two things: he's leaving Montreal to play for the Ottawa Centaurs, and he's gay.

  15. There was a twitter post. A video. The caption said #pissgate. The video started playing automatically, and Ilya saw the nondescript white tile of the Metros locker room, and then the camera peered around a corner, and there he was. There Shane was. It played just long enough for Ilya to hear himself—say it—and Shane—piss on me. please—before his phone fell from his nerveless fingers and shattered on the concrete.

  16. Shane Hollander is the number two overall NHL draft pick and a newly minted Montreal Voyageur. He’s also laser focused on his goals: being the best by beating the best. For him, this means a continued rivalry with number one draft pick—and new Ottawa Centaur—Ilya Rozanov. But when a problem with Rozanov’s immigration paperwork threatens his future in the NHL, what does that mean for Shane’s own career? He can’t risk finding out…so they get married. Just for immigration. A fast, practical, mutually beneficial solution.

No one will ever suspect, let alone find out, that the NHL’s greatest rivals are secretly married. And there’s certainly no risk of feelings getting involved. They have a game plan.
