  2. Most days it felt like Alexei didn’t want a younger brother at all—like he would have been happier if Ilya had never been born, or if he’d gotten a brother that was less clingy, less soft.

But Alexei could’ve pushed him down the stairs and broken every bone in his body, and Ilya would’ve probably begged him to do it again, if it meant he’d spend more time with him.

or: Ilya's father doesn't die during the 2016/2017 season. His brother does.

  5. Men do not cry. Ilya knows this, as much as he knows that being strong is only part of the battle ahead of him; being seen to be strong matters more. Ilya is twelve years old, and no longer a child. It has been four long, brittle days since his mother— since her accident.

The practice rink is busy, tonight. Under the stern tutelage of Coach Baranov, everyone here is fighting to justify their time on the ice. Hockey, Baranov tells them, often, is not a team sport. Hockey is an act of violence, and of endurance.

Ilya believes he is practiced at both.

  6. “We knew when his words came in that he’d–” Yuna’s voice cracked around the idea, that specific word escaping her. “That he won’t have to know what it feels like to lose his soulmate.”

Because Shane was always going to go first. How must it have felt, to look upon her son and see those words, and know with complete certainty he would go first? Maybe it was better, having as vague of a word as Ilya did on his chest. At least he couldn’t think about it, couldn’t imagine scenarios in which it could be said.

“I assume,” Yuna said, pausing to take a deep breath as though to steel herself, “he said yours last night.”

Ilya nodded, admitting what he didn’t dare say out loud.

AU where the last words you ever hear from your soulmate are tattooed on your chest. Ilya and Shane still argue over the party, Ilya still already chose Shane, and everything goes so much worse after Shane leaves.

  7. “You’re taking him to the Canteen?”

“Yeah- wait. You know it?” Shane turned to Rose with a surprised look on his face.

“He’ll like it!” Miles said, looking a bit shame-faced, like a child who hadn’t expected to be caught out.

    “The Canteen, Miles.”

    “He’ll have fun!” Miles insisted.

    —-----------------------------

Going to a kink club with Miles may be one of the weirdest things Shane has ever done. But the evening gets even freakier when he bumps into Ilya Rozanov, his longtime rival and captain of the very team Shane was meant to be playing that night.

He's unfairly hot and incredibly irritating- but he gets under Shane's skin in a way no other dom can.

So hey, they might just find a way to make this work.

(Based on my own experiences as a domme in the London kink scene!)

  10. Ilya's supposed to tell Shane when he's getting bad again. He's promised, over and over, to ask for help. To reach out. To let Shane take care of him for once. Ilya genuinely means it when he makes this promise. He has no intention of breaking it. The issue is this: Ilya doesn't always realize things are getting bad. Actually, he almost never notices until someone else does. or: In the midst of a depressive episode, Ilya wonders if Shane truly understands what he's signing up for.

  11. Ilya rounded the desk, and his heart didn’t stutter but simply stopped. For an endless second everything stilled around him. Shane had found them, his letters and his journals. And the world turned sideways slowly slipping away from Ilya’s grasp. Like someone had taken away the solid ground underneath his feet, leaving him falling indefinitely. His entire focus narrowed on the pages Shane was clasping in his hands and the shoe carton next to him.

He had always promised himself that one day he would show Shane, he would tell him about all of it. But he had never wanted it to happen like this. For Shane to just stumble across the pages that carried his darkest thoughts and simple truths of his life. Never wanted him to read those alone or ever. Because Ilya wasn’t sure he was strong enough to revisit all the open wounds he had spilled on those pages.

  12. Maybe together they could figure out a way to make sure Ilya was never afraid of David again. He really didn’t want to be afraid of David.

“Is… silly.” Ilya said. “Maybe not silly, but now that we are here and not there, I see it was silly. I broke the wine, and I thought - maybe everyone will be angry. And…” Clearing his throat, Ilya pushed past his discomfort to spit out the next part. “Well, angry back in Russia is not the same as angry here, I think.”

“What was angry like back in Russia?”

    OR

Ilya drops a bottle of wine, and it's fine. Really, it's fine. If only someone could tell Ilya's brain that.

  13. Shane Hollander meets Ilya Rozanov when he is four years old and he cannot be any more unimpressed by this turn of events.

Thirteen years later, like the most cliché heartbreak in the making, they are best friends and Shane is thoroughly, utterly in love with him.

    *

Ilya Rozanov's life has been a study in leaving things behind and one way or another he learned to deal with it.

One exception is Shane Hollander who came along thirteen years ago, settled in all too cozy, and ensured himself as the one thing Ilya can't ever leave.

  14. The drive to the airport terminal feels eternal, longer than it should be. Every stop the driver makes, gets Irina’s blood pumping faster in fear at possible discovery. She has planned this, but it’s all dependent on not being found out. Irina has done everything to make sure she's not discovered running away from the country with Ilyusha, but that doesn't mean her anxiety isn't screaming at her that soon enough it will all fall apart. OR: Irina doesn't commit suicide and runs away with Ilya at the first opportunity.

Or: Yuna learns about Ilya's past bit by bit over the years.

  16. Shane Hollander is not a small fucking guy; he is all muscle, with big, calloused hockey-player hands and eyes nearly pretty enough to disguise the violence hidden in breadth of his shoulders.

    Alexei is impressed.

Not a bad get, for someone fished out of a pool of hockey men who look like thumbs, their noses like squashed tomatoes and ears like boat sails. If it could not be beautiful, nosy bitch Svetlana, if it has to be a man, if it has to be a hockey player, then rich as God Shane Hollander isn’t the worst Ilyusha could have pulled.

I only speak English.” The boy's eyebrows furrow, but he doesn’t seem all too deterred by the language barrier. Instead, he hands Shane a piece of pink chalk. He points to the drawing he’s been working on, saying something in that funny language again Or: Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov meet when they are six. Shane nearly stops himself right there, runs through all of the ways he could navigate away from the question, but when he opens his mouth it comes right out anyway. "Was he hard on you too?" Or Ilya had been waiting for the other shoe to drop. He just hadn’t expected it to be about this, hadn’t expected, or maybe simply refused to accept, that his father would somehow still hurt him beyond the grave, that the punches and split lips and broken ribs would still, impossibly, ache within him after all this time. or Shane tries to talk to Ilya about his past. It doesn't go as planned.
