Shane just wanted his husband. The alcohol hadn't done anything to soften the effects of the music and lights encircling him. He felt trapped – suffocated – like his skin was fusing itself to his stiff muscles. The room spun faster, and the Canadian wasn't convinced he was standing upright anymore. His heart pounded in his ears as the music rattled his ribcage once more, an insatiable itch beckoning his blunt fingernails. He wanted to scream. He wanted to rip his hair out. Things like this didn't happen to other people; Shane knew that. He’d been alive long enough to experience the confused glances and exasperated scoffs that always accompanied his discomfort with things other people didn't even notice. He would not fuck this up – not because he couldn't handle the way the sheets touched his skin. The burning of his skin spread to his eyes as his vision blurred. He squeezed his eyes shut and scrubbed his hands over his face. He would not cry. The tears fell hot and silent. They pooled at the curve of his jaw and around his chin, puddles of shame and self-contempt. Fucking breathe, he told himself, as he turned the faucet of the shower as far as it could go. He stood watching the water pool around his feet and slip down the drain until he heard Ilya stir. At first, he wasn't sure if he had really heard his name. “Shane?… Shane?” He wanted to yell back, assure Ilya everything was fine, but when he opened his mouth, only a squeak escaped. “Moya lyubov?” He cleared his throat and tried again: “In here.”

Nobody moves for a moment as Shane stares the woman down, and he’s seconds away from sawing the damn thing off himself, when the woman nods to the men surrounding the hybrid. And then there’s a flurry of movement, a clicking sound and then the men stand back to reveal Ilya in his bare faced glory, unobstructed by the muzzle.
Shane takes him in, inhaling softly at the sharp cheekbones, the moles dusted over his face, the pillowy lips that are set in a firm, displeased line. Shane wonders how big his fangs are. If he was a fighter, they must have been sharpened regularly.
Shane doesn’t want to think about the damage this wall of a hybrid had inflicted on others, the damage he could inflict on Shane. The hybrid stares at him, expression hard to determine but the intensity of it has Shane holding back a shiver. He’s staring at Shane like he can see every thought inside of him, calculating. As if they were on opposing sides of a ring, ready for the bell to chime and for Ilya to go in for the kill.
Shane gets roped into fostering a troublesome hybrid with a bad track record. Except what begins as a cordial arrangement turns into something much more complicated.

“I am sorry,” he says. “I am not trying to fight. I just don’t like the idea of you not being okay and me not knowing, even when I am in the same place as you.”
That Shane can understand. He wouldn’t like it if their positions were reversed, after all, if he thought Ilya was potentially in danger and he was in the next room over drinking champagne and making smalltalk. He sees Ilya go somewhere in his head sometimes, sees him retreat inwards, sees him check out even if his body is still there, going so deep inside that he doesn’t even catch Shane’s eye for a bit even when something funny happens, too far away for Shane to reach him.
But it’s also not like he can just go up and grab Ilya by the arm and pull him away from the party, not without inviting speculation and a whisper storm. He doesn’t have that right, doesn’t have that privilege, to potentially need Ilya or be needed by Ilya and be able to just pull him away.
It’s moments like these that Shane feels the weight of their secret like a physical thing.

Ilya let his hands fall to Shane’s belly, spreading them wide across the warm skin. “A baby.” He murmured and Shane sighed into him. “God I love you so much.” or Shane and Ilya attend All Stars weekend, fully intent on just enjoy versing each other for the first time in years, only to leave with much more than broken records and the chance to revisit their old rivalry.

He looks up when he hears Rozanov snort. “Mangoes?” Rozanov repeats, tugging his shirt over his head. “Really?” “They’re good,” Shane defends. “Better than vodka,” he adds, pointedly. Level 1 bonds, at their core, are practical things. They are incredibly clinical, especially in the MLH. Injected with grade A suppressants to keep the bond controlled, exchanging scents as briefly as was manageable, a quick barely-there shallow bite to the gland on the omega's neck, paperwork filed with the league office after a full day of observations, and suddenly an omega is considered 'safe' to play professional hockey. The omega, now bonded, is considered less likely to 'disrupt team dynamics,' whatever that means.
Shane had been nineteen when Montreal assigned him to Gilbert Comeau.
OR: omegas are only allowed to play professional hockey if they enter into a contracted bond with an alpha on their team. Shane's alpha in Montreal is more than lackluster, but what can he expect? Though, maybe a little forewarning would have been nice, because Comeau suddenly wants him gone, and Shane soon finds himself being traded to what could be the worst possible outcome: Boston.
