“I am sorry,” he says. “I am not trying to fight. I just don’t like the idea of you not being okay and me not knowing, even when I am in the same place as you.”
That Shane can understand. He wouldn’t like it if their positions were reversed, after all, if he thought Ilya was potentially in danger and he was in the next room over drinking champagne and making smalltalk. He sees Ilya go somewhere in his head sometimes, sees him retreat inwards, sees him check out even if his body is still there, going so deep inside that he doesn’t even catch Shane’s eye for a bit even when something funny happens, too far away for Shane to reach him.
But it’s also not like he can just go up and grab Ilya by the arm and pull him away from the party, not without inviting speculation and a whisper storm. He doesn’t have that right, doesn’t have that privilege, to potentially need Ilya or be needed by Ilya and be able to just pull him away.
It’s moments like these that Shane feels the weight of their secret like a physical thing.

Shane was hurt and Ilya couldn’t be there with him. No one knew that he cared, that his boyfriend was in the hospital, not even Shane’s parents.
OR: Yuna Hollander just wanted to grab some of Shane’s things from his apartment during his hospital stay. She didn't suspect she'd stumble across a home invasion, and that the perpetrator would be Ilya Rozanov.

Despite learning his lesson. Despite knowing not to go against every single wall he was forced to build up because of his remorseless family, every mask he tried on to hide from his merciless country, every single survival instinct he had left, and every single morsel of preservation, Ilya just couldn’t resist the sun. or Ilya's feelings after Shane leaves him during the tuna melt scene along with the memories and pain this also conjures up for him.

Shane finds himself thinking, wishing, hoping, for more than shadows with Ilya after leaving his hotel room during the All Stars. He makes the decision to come out on Instagram, belatedly coming out to his parents in a text, and then goes down to hit the punching bag in the hotel gym until his brain fizzles into a decision about Ilya. He's alone for long enough, but Ilya stays afterwards.

Ilya knows that, between him and Shane, he's the more affectionate of the two. He's not sure if it's because he's from Europe, where everyone greets each other with a hug and a kiss on the cheek, or if it's because he grew up so starved for love and affection that he can't do anything except show Shane how much he loves him at any chance that he has. So, yes, he knows that he's the one most likely to kiss Shane on the cheek when he skates by him at practice or come up behind Shane when he's cooking dinner just to wrap his arms around him or fall on top of Shane while he's reading on the couch, desperate to have his skin touching Shane's. But, Shane… Shane loves Ilya differently. It's quieter. More intentional. — Or, five times that Shane loved Ilya in his quiet way, and one time that he loved Ilya loudly.

Set during and after episode six. Ilya goes with Shane to Yuna and David’s house expecting discomfort, tension, and restraint. Instead, he finds warmth, awkward honesty, and something he never thought he’d be offered so easily: acceptance. "To be looked at fully. To be recognised. And to be loved anyway." A fic about being chosen, being seen, and the quiet certainty of knowing where you belong. With him.

Shane Hollander is everything the NHL wants him to be: a Golden Boy, a captain, a rivalry- ready face of the league. Ilya Rozanov is everything Shane isn’t allowed to want: sharp-tongued, unapologetic, and devastatingly magnetic. From a charged first collision to a decade of stolen nights, staged girlfriends, and a rivalry that burns hotter than hate ever could, Shane and Ilya build a love that survives only in hallways, hotel rooms, and the spaces where cameras can’t reach. But some ghosts don’t fade quietly—and some loves refuse to stay secret forever. A story about ambition, fear, glass walls, and choosing each other even when the world says it’s a disaster.
