  4. Set towards the end of The Long Game. The day after Ilya loses the playoffs and tells Shane he's like his mother, Shane hustles them off to the Cottage. A lot of feelings that haven't been discussed get discussed.

“Moya lyubov, I know we have plans to be very honest with each other, yes?”
Shane pulls away slightly, but he only makes it an inch or two, because Ilya’s still hugging him close. “No, no, do not run away, Hollander. Stay.”
Shane stops trying to move and lets himself sag back into Ilya. Ilya huffs contentedly, “Yes. Good. We have this plan, and it is a good plan. But you said we have time, yes?”
“Forever,” promises Shane, “I’m with you forever, Ilya.”
“Yes,” Ilya agrees, another gentle kiss pressed to the corner of Shane’s mouth, and Shane turns a little so that it turns into a real kiss. Ilya smiles against his lips as he pulls away, “So maybe we slow down? We do not have to share all of our feelings today, okay?”
“Okay,” Shane agrees with a little laugh, “Yes. Some of them can wait until tomorrow.”

  5. Shane heard a strangled shout tear free from his mouth, and then his body was moving without his brain’s input. He flew across the ice, ripping his gloves off and reaching for Ilya’s throat. He wrapped his fingers around the warm skin, feeling the flow of blood pulse harder with each beat of Ilya’s heart. His eyes raced across Ilya’s face, desperately looking for a sign that his boyfriend was still with him. Ilya’s eyes were wide and glazed, staring past Shane instead of at him. His face was losing color rapidly, turning a sickly shade of white that mirrored the ice beneath him. His mouth was open, loose and slack, mouthguard still jammed into his upper jaw. Shane watched in terror as Ilya grew limper in his arms.
    ——————————————————
During a Boston-Montreal game, Ilya's neck is cut by a skate, and Shane is forced to witness the love of his life bleeding out on the ice in front of him. All of the plans they have made seem to be slipping away before his eyes, right when they were so close to finalizing Ilya's transfer to Ottawa. As they race against the clock to save Ilya's life, Shane reckons with the secrets they have been forced to keep and fears that they might never get to live their truth out in the open.

“I have many questions,” Ilya drawls, cheek still pressed into Shane's leg. “I am fine? Mm, probably.” He quirks his lips in a smile that doesn't reach his eyes. “I will know for sure after we talk.”

When Shane starts to sit up, Ilya lowers his legs onto the mattress and slinks up beside him. He hasn't taken off his sneakers yet. “I'm not gonna kill you, or anything, if you're worried.”

    “Comforting,” Ilya rumbles.

Shane Hollander knows he’s not a small guy. Years of hockey and workouts have built up his muscles, and lucky genetics from his father’s side places him just shy of six feet. He’s checked hockey players half a foot and several pounds more than him, knocked Scott Hunter into the ice in the one fight he’s ever actually thrown hands in. But as much as Shane loves the game, the fast movements, passes, and team camaraderie, there were times where he could only feel regret at following the path of athletic fame. He puts on the media smile he practices in the mirror as he brushes his hair each day, uses the bright lights of press conferences to erase his view of the audience, and keeps his answers simple and focused on hockey.

The number of people outside the arena still makes him feel crushed in on all sides, small. Eyes trained on his face, cameras flashing, pens and cell phones being passed into his hands. The itch of it all settles under his skin.

  11. Shane loves his husband. He really does! But sometimes, it can be hard to put that love into words.

So maybe, when he tried to put it into words, he ended up writing a couple songs.

And maybe he released them under a fake name.

And maybe they got insanely popular somehow.

AKA the one where Shane and Ilya are married and in love and Shane is a little insecure about his ability to love his husband. So he becomes a faceless pop sensation. By accident. Mostly? It's complicated.

During their annual two weeks at the cottage, Shane and Ilya both fall ill (and claim the other is responsible for it) resulting in two days of coughing and chugging electrolytes while neither of them admit how bad they feel. Even though he attempts to hide it, Yuna can hear her son coughing over the phone and decides to go check on him during his yearly 'silent retreat', entirely unaware that he had company. Or that his company came in the shape of Ilya Rozanov.
    ---
Even with the blinds pulled closed to keep the lights out she could still see Ilya Rozanov in her son’s bed; arms wrapped around him tightly. They looked asleep. Not just napping but deeply unconscious.

Yuna supposed that was the effect of the half empty bottle of Nyquil on the nightstand.

She swallowed harshly, stepping closer to the bed. Her son was tucked against Ilya, face buried against his neck as a source of warmth and comfort. “Shane...” she whispered, shaking him gently. “Shane.”

He didn’t stir, breaths steady as he slept like a rock. Her eyebrows knitted together, gaze shifting to Ilya, who had his jaw resting on top of Shane’s head, one of his hands under his shirt to feel his skin against his palm.

  13. A hit is a hit.

This one ends Shane Hollander’s career.

Without hockey, there is no rivalry. No opposing locker rooms to build distance. No automatic goodbyes to make loving Ilya Rozanov survivable.

For years, the game decided for them. It set the terms. It gave them an excuse.

    Now there is only choice.

As Shane stares down early retirement, rehab, and the terrifying blank space where his identity used to be, the one thing he can’t avoid anymore is Ilya — not across the ice, not in another city, not at the end of a season.

If the rivalry is gone, what are they?

An alternate path in the Heated Rivalry universe where the injury is career-ending, the loss is deeper than bone, and the happily ever after has to be chosen without hockey to hide behind.

  14. June 2014, Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada, Voicemail Recovery System. The day after the MLH MVP award ceremony. *beep* Voicemail: Hello, this is Shane Hollander? I’m so sorry to bother you, um - I hope this is the right voicemail for the lost and found. I was at the hotel this weekend, and I think I left a set of cufflinks somewhere in my room? They have my first and last initial engraved on each and they’re gold. It’s room number - actually, wait. Um, you know what. Never mind. Canyoupleasedeletethismessage.

  15. When Ilya throws a punch on the ice after a homophobic remark, Shane hates seeing Ilya hurt. They don’t argue and where Shane’s tears finally stop the fight. The locker room is a pressure cooker, but they don’t crack. Not there. Shane keeps his face carefully neutral while he changes, answers a teammate’s joke with the right tone, the right smile. Ilya can feel him watching anyway. Can feel the heat of it without ever looking up. His knuckles throb, split and swollen, but he keeps his hands busy, tapes them himself, jaw locked. When their eyes meet, Shane gives the smallest nod. You good? Ilya nods back. Later. Later is a long drive home with the radio on low and neither of them speaking. Later is the apartment door clicking shut behind them, the quiet rushing in too fast. Shane drops his bag by the door. “I didn’t like that you fought him.” Ilya exhales through his nose. Here we go. “You weren’t supposed to.” “I saw it,” Shane says. “I heard it. I didn’t like it.” “He crossed a line.” “I know,” Shane replies. “That doesn’t mean you had to break your hand.” Ilya turns, irritation flaring. “It’s hockey.” “That’s not an answer.” “It is,” Ilya snaps. “This happens every night.” “And every night I hate it,” Shane shoots back. “I hate watching you get hurt.” Ilya scoffs. “I’m fine.” “You’re bleeding,” Shane says. “You’re always bleeding.” Ilya bristles. “So what, you want me to just stand there?” “No,” Shane says, frustrated. “I want you to stop acting like violence is the only language you have.” That stings. “I didn’t fight because I don’t know any better,” Ilya says coldly. “I fought because someone said something about you.” “And I didn’t ask you to,” Shane fires back. “I don’t want to be the excuse you use to wreck yourself.” “Don’t do that,” Ilya says. “Don’t make it sound like I regret it.” “I’m not,” Shane says. “I’m saying I don’t like watching you pay the price.” “You don’t get to decide how I play,” Ilya snaps. “I’m not trying to,” Shane says. “I’m telling you how it feels to sit there and watch you throw your body into something that could cost you games, seasons, careers—” “So now I’m irresponsible,” Ilya interrupts. “No,” Shane says. “You’re reckless.” Silence slams down between them. Ilya’s voice drops. “You knew who I was.” “And you knew who I was,” Shane shoots back. “Someone who worries. Someone who loves you enough to be scared.” “That’s not my fault.” “I didn’t say it was,” Shane says. “But it is my reality.” Ilya runs a hand through his hair, pacing now. “You think the league is going to protect you? You think refs give a shit?” “I think you getting suspended doesn’t help me,” Shane snaps. “I think you getting concussed doesn’t help me. I think you bleeding on the ice because someone wanted to get under your skin about me doesn’t help either of us.” “So I should just let them say it,” Ilya says bitterly. “Let them think it’s okay.” “I’m asking you to trust me to handle my own battles,” Shane says. “I don’t need you throwing punches for me like I’m made of glass.” “I’m not protecting you because you’re weak,” Ilya says. “I’m protecting you because I love you.” “And I love you,” Shane fires back, voice breaking just a little, “which is why I don’t want to watch you destroy yourself.” “That’s dramatic,” Ilya snaps. “It was one fight.” “It’s never one fight,” Shane says. “It’s always one more.” “You don’t get to cherry-pick parts of me,” Ilya says. “Hockey is violent. You don’t get me without that.”
