After Shane comes out, the Metros become convinced he might be attracted to them.
Shane corrects this assumption with devastating precision, accidentally describes Ilya Rozanov in the process, and somehow turns the entire locker room into a deranged pageant of heterosexual insecurity.

“You are my friend, Hayden, but he is the man I am going to spend to rest of my life with - he is the man that I love. I will choose him over you, every fucking time.” Over anything and everything, Shane would choose Ilya. Even over hockey, if it came to that. There’s no doubt in his mind, no question about it. Losing hockey would hurt, and Shane would grieve it, but it wouldn’t kill him. It would be an ache he could live with. Losing Ilya is not something that Shane could ever survive. They’re so tangled together - so intertwined - that to lose Ilya would be to lose himself.

He doesn’t remember any part of that night that didn’t involve Shane. He doesn’t remember the woman’s name, or what she looked like, or even why he didn’t go home with her. All of that was insignificant, a blur that faded into nothingness.
He only remembers Shane, and then the absence of him.

ashamed of recklessly wrecking your heart by justhockey
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid

Through the haze of darkness and body heat and drunken partygoers, all Shane could see was Ilya. His eyes were fixed on Shane and Rose: the way she touched him, the way she kissed him, the way they moved together. And the look on Ilya’s face - the agony in his eyes - pierced Shane like a blade through his heart. It made him want to peel his skin off; made him feel ashamed for having a body that had been touched by someone other than Ilya.

“Ilya,” he whispers. “I want this. I want to know when you’re hurting and when things are hard, because I want you. I want you when you’re sad, and lonely, and messy-“
“-you hate mess,” Ilya teases, drawing a hard-earned smile out of Shane.
“But I love you.”
