  2. Cliff Marleau knows how he's perceived.

Publicly, he's Cliff Marleau, #7, Captain of the Boston Raiders. On ice, he's imposing. Never dirty, but aggressive. Off the ice, he's your typical hockey himbo: big, loud, funny, maybe not the brightest.

Privately, to his teammates and friends, his reputation is a bit more rounded, more filled out. A good friend, a loving son. Serious when he needs to be. Reliable, trustworthy.

But he knows, he knows, the picture his reputation paints.

And he knows what it leaves out.

  3. Shane was the first omega ever drafted into the NHL. His designation usually considered only good for two things: breeding and mating — and most people didn’t even think male omegas were worthy of the latter. He had a lot to prove. And he really couldn’t afford distractions. Especially when those distractions came in the form of a cocky Russian alpha.

Maybe this way people will finally listen to him.

His body did this chore for him - taking a beating, painfully building muscles - and in reward he got his father’s approval. In much lesser reward he also got his mama’s worry, which, while he loved her care, he wished she would worry less. Wished she could see that he knew the way the world worked and he could fit into it. Wished she would not remind him that she loved her gentle Ilyushenka and that he did not need to hide, not from her.

Ilya Rozanov vs his body :)

  6. Shane tries not to be disappointed in the way the whole thing has worked out. Because the thing about Rozanov is that his existence is infuriating. And he is so much fun to play against. Shane had almost liked the thought of having a rival and, had the lottery gone a little differently, he and Rozanov would have been drafted to the same division and really delivered on that possibility. They could have really enjoyed it.

As it stands, one of them is going to the southernmost team in the league, and the other is going all the way up North.

    Or-

The draft lottery goes a little differently and suddenly there is no rivalry, no joint CCM campaign, and nothing between Shane and Ilya but a charged encounter in a hotel gym and 4,000 kilometres of distance.

A lot of things are different, and some others are too fated to be ruined by something as immaterial as luck.

He’s just about ready to doze off—his ritualistic pre-dinner, thirty-minute nap—when, suddenly, Ilya says, “Huh. Interesting.”

Shane cracks one eye open. “Hmm?”

“Oh, nothing, малыш,” he replies, though his brows are furrowed when he says it. Shane’s even more curious now.

    “No, really, what is it?”

Ilya must lose some internal debate; a deep sigh leaves his body before, wordlessly, he turns his phone to Shane.

The bright light makes him squint, still not used to Ilya and his affinity for both using the light-mode feature and turning the brightness in his phone to a maximum. He forgoes scolding him when, after his eyes have adjusted, he reads: Metros acquires Fil-Canadian Rivera; second Asian player in franchise history after Hollander.

At first he thinks, oh, that’s my name. Shane hasn’t seen his name mentioned remotely near the words ‘Montreal Metros’ ever since he transferred to Ottawa three years ago. Then, and this is when it finally dawns on him, Shane thinks: second?

  10. "I wanted you to be there in the bar and tell this guy to fuck off. I wanted you to put your arm around me, to kiss my cheek or my hair or my jaw, or… I don't know, grab my ass like a freak. I wanted to say I was taken. I know we can't do any of that, in public, really. Of course I know that."

Shane tipped his head back. "But I want… I want you to want to claim me. Maybe it's weird for me to want this? I know it's nice to say that you don't own someone, because we're people, not objects. But I've always—"

Cutting himself off, he took a shaky breath. Why was this so hard to say?

"Is not weird to want," Ilya said quietly.

Or, Shane wants to be owned.

  11. Ilya was used to hazing. He had been subjected to it, he had participated in it, and, as a captain, he had stood guard over the rookies and protected them from anything truly harmful. But if he had been asked, Ilya would have approved of this prank. He would have authorized it, given Cliff and Vicky his seal of approval, perhaps even helped orchestrate it.

Any other day, Ilya might have been happy to play along.

But, in perfect dramatic irony, it had not happened any other day. It had happened today. And, cherry on top, of course the rookie had to walk in when Shane was already freaking out about Ilya saying his name.

A prank-gone-wrong leads to the Boston Bears finding out about Shane and Ilya’s relationship in 2016. The day Ilya first invited Shane into his house. Right after they say each other’s names for the first time. Fuck his life, honestly.

Ilya lies on the ground and looks up at the stars and waits to die.
    The pavement is cold.
Ilya wonders if his mother was cold when she died. He thinks maybe not, since she didn’t die in a deserted alleyway in Vancouver. But she did die at home, and maybe that was even colder.

In a world where the Cold War ended but the Iron Curtain never fell, Ilya Rozanov is the most promising figure skater in Russia. At only 19, he’s an easy candidate for gold at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, one of the only times Russia allows its citizens to leave the USSR.
And then one mistake means Russia will never let him come back. Hollander won’t stop trying to talk to him, but the last thing Ilya wants to do is talk to the man who ruined his life. He might be stuck in Canada, a refugee, for the rest of his life, but that doesn’t mean he has to talk to Hollander ever again.
He wanders Vancouver aimlessly and doesn’t think about Russia, or Hollander, or the ice that can never be home again.

  16. The house where his mother killed herself is nothing but a pile of ash. It should satisfy him, maybe, that the building that was once her prison is gone. It was his prison too, for years. But something about the way the charred brick has crumbled in on itself makes him feel empty.

Suddenly, Ilya Rozanov is a single parent to his orphaned niece. Suddenly, he has a whole lot more to lose.
The only way to keep his love safe, is to keep it secret.
(Its not like he doesn't have enough of those already)

  17. "I've been thinking," Ilya murmurs, breath hot against Shane's mouth. "We never tested how many times you can come in an hour. You said two. Now I think you could do four."

Shane's head spins as all his blood rushes south. "This seems like an awfully complicated distraction," he says.

He feels Ilya grin against his lips. "So? It's working."

Shane wants to talk about Ilya's move to Ottawa. Ilya doesn't want to talk much at all.

  18. Ilya feels like a zombie; he’s an approximation of something living.

He knows what this is, of course. He isn’t stupid. He was just a child when he watched the life bleed out of his mama, long before she stopped breathing. He watched her sweet smiles grow hollow, and her kind eyes fall blank. He felt her slipping through his fingertips like grains of sand in an hourglass; her time was up before Ilya had truly even realised that it was running out.

When he looks in the mirror, he sees her staring back at him: blond hair, and blue eyes, and an emptiness that kills.

  19. And then there is Ilya Rozanov after all of them, the cocky eighteen year old smoking in front of a no-smoking sign outside an arena in Saskatchewan. Ilya Rozanov, hockey player, born in Moscow, Russia to Irina Rozanova and Grigori Rozanov (though Shane wouldn’t really know this until much later). June 15, 1991. Shane was born before him so, technically, Rozanov has never known a life without Shane Hollander, which he will definitely lord over him whenever he’d get the chance to. His jersey number is 81. He’s a center like Shane. He’s the captain of the Boston Raiders. He’s a Gemini, though Shane has no idea how that affects him, if it has any bearing on his personality at all. Shane thinks there’s none because Rozanov is an asshole regardless, but all the tabloids insist that there is. He’s six foot three; only an inch taller than Shane. He’s a boy. There’s this thing that he does where he rubs his nose whenever he’s lying. It’s a pretty easy tell, and Rozanov is not a very good liar. He’s a boy, a boy, a boy.

Sometimes, he wishes Rozanov was a girl instead.

  20. 'This is what happens when the social media manager for the Ottawa Centaurs just finished rewatching the entirety of The Office for the 3rd time' “What a fucking nerd,” Ilya laughed, his eyes following Shane across the ice. The camera swung between them before eventually landing back on Ilya. “I want to eat him,” Luca blinked at him, horror slowly etching onto his face. “Like...sexually or...literally? Behind the camera, Harris cleared his throat to remind them of his presence. Ilya’s eyes never left Shane, who was still berating Troy by citing some charts from his clipboard. “Yes,” Haas looked into the camera in utter fear. Alternatively, The Office Fic
