  2. Shane Hollander ✅ @shanehollanderofficial
I’ve seen many publications over the years speculating on my own, and my husband’s, hockey stats and accolades in relation to our romantic relationship and when the public assumes it started.

We don’t owe this to anyone. But we’ve also been playing professional hockey for seventeen years and we’ve both run out of ahem, cares to give.

On the right is a photograph from the behind the scenes of our joint CCM advertisement in July of 2010. This photo predates the hundreds of combined accomplishments listed on the left.

Oh, and it was also taken about six hours before our first kiss.

    -----

or; a year from retirement and out of fucks to give, shane reveals their timeline to twitter in response to the latest speculatory article on their relationship. hollanovs across the world rejoice, centaurs celebrate their beloved dads, and former teammates share the not-so-subtle clues they missed the first time.

    Help me
I am in love with a virgin

Ilya was exaggerating for comic effect, of course. He wasn’t in love with Shane Hollander. He was just absolutely infatuated with him and wanted to carry him around in his pocket and also fuck him senseless and then count his freckles while he slept beside him. So not love, just whatever that was, but still. It was a problem.

    Or,
A newly-drafted Ilya Rozanov finds himself transfixed by a beautiful man in the grocery store.

A newly-single Shane Hollander does something uncharacteristically brave.

Neither of them are prepared for just how out of their depth they're about to be.

  4. Welcome to the Ultimate Game.

If you’re looking for a chronicle of redemption or, worse yet, a fairy tale ending with a kiss under the snow, you’ve walked into the wrong locker room. This is the story of a sabotage.

For ten years, the hockey world has feasted on the rivalry between two captains with the same hunger one brings to a public execution. And us? We served them the blood on a silver platter, while in the shadows of hotel rooms in Montreal or Boston, we exchanged fluids and secrets with the precision of two spies in enemy territory.

They believe the ice is a sanctuary of heterosexual secrets. They don’t realize that while they were betting on our next elbow to the face, they were witnessing a long, violent decade of foreplay.

Now, it’s time for El Plan.

Shane is the butterfly flapping its wings on an underwear billboard. I am the tornado about to level the entire NHL.

Grab your popcorn. It’s going to be a beautiful massacre.

My name is Ilya Rozanov, and you can thank me later.

Shane gestured helplessly at the empty space Wyatt had just vacated. “Rozanov. What are you doing? This is for charity.” Sliding a heavy, matte-black credit card across the counter, Ilya didn’t even blink. “I know,” he murmured, his blue eyes dropping directly to Shane’s mouth. “I’m being generous.” When Shane Hollander is drafted into working the hospital’s Valentine’s Day kissing booth, he expects awkward kisses and a miserable afternoon. What he doesn’t expect is Ilya Rozanov buying every single ticket.

  6. “You can go, y’know, if you want-“ “Ah, no. I do not want to,” Ilya interrupts. “Stay at home with my very sexy husband who is wearing his glasses, or go out to a club filled with people who are not you? The answer is very simple, Shane.” Shane rolls his eyes again, but he’s smiling as he saunters towards Ilya.

  7. When Ilya's phone is hacked and all of his private texts are leaked, Shane Hollander is grateful for insisting that he and Ilya delete their texts each day.

What he did not expect, though, was to find out that Ilya and Cliff Marlow were having sex throughout Ilya's time in Boston... and maybe still are.

  8. Life feels so chaotic for Shane sometimes, with all the loud noises and the unwritten rules he’s expected to follow, even though no one ever taught them to him. It’s why the bookstore feels more like home to him than anywhere else in Boston. It doesn’t ask Shane to be anything other than himself. Doesn’t ask for any more than he can give.

    He can just exist here.

Shane likes slow, likes taking his time. And Ilya - without saying or doing anything in particular - makes Shane feel like that’s okay. Like he isn’t doing anything wrong by standing still sometimes.

(Or, Shane works in a bookstore, Ilya plays hockey, and they both go to the same college. They fall in love in every universe.)

  9. "What is your problem?" Shane demanded, his voice sounding thinner than he liked, laced with the exhaustion of the night. "I gave up our bedroom and the guest room and now you're here". He heard the rustle of fabric as Ilya settled onto the far end of the couch, claiming his territory with his infuriating, unspoken intensity. "We sleep in same place no matter what," Ilya murmured, the low, steady vibration of his voice hitting Shane somewhere deep. "So stay put or I follow you around home".

  10. Over the summer, Cliff Marlow made the decision to leave the team he won a Cup with, his hometown, and the only place he'd ever known to move to a different country, a terrible team, and basically the middle of nowhere.

And so far, he hasn't regretted it for a single second.

Or: a continuation of i know the sound of your heart showing moments from Cliff and Ilya's first season with the centaurs, a couple of shocking revelations (though they really shouldn't have been), and, of course, Cliff Marlow being the most loyal friend anyone could ask for.

  11. “Shane has boyfriend?"

“Mom thinks so. He’s dodging my texts, but it definitely seems like he’s seeing someone.”

Ilya's whispered "No" was drowned out by a loud snort from another teammate, who said something like, "Good for lil' bro."

Ilya shouldn’t feel like dying. Should have expected this to happen at some point. Deserved it, even. He had been ghosting Shane for months, after all.

In which Ilya knows he's not good enough to be with his best friend's little brother. He spirals over Shane possibly dating someone else nonetheless.

Alternatively, Ilya will always be the one Shane will still run to.

  12. Farah, Shane, and his mom have a statement drafted by the end of the first period of the Boston v. Toronto game. By the time the Raiders are done showering and are pulled for post-game press, everyone with even a passing interest in professional hockey knows that Shane Hollander is an Unrestricted Free Agent looking for a new team.

Shane watched live as Ilya blinked stupidly, took a few seconds to process, and then quickly answered into the mic. This interview would gain millions of views over the coming months and would be cited as the source of the most chaotic social media rollercoaster the MLH ever had.

No one knew it then, but the Great MLH Seduction had officially begun.

    *****

Or: Ilya stays with the Boston Raiders instead of trading to Ottawa. This causes quite a few ripples when Shane finally ends his contract with Montreal.

Featuring: the Hollander Family's Spreadsheets(TM), professional hockey culture shifts, and a tasteful amount of fraud against the MLH.

  13. One day the drawers in Shane's kitchen turned on him. One by one they all turned squeaky and slow. And of course, the fucking repair guy is on vacation for the next week and a half. or. Overstimulated Shane and Softy Sweety Ilya. Shane stood at the stove stirring oatmeal with slow, methodical motions while Ilya leaned against the island in a pair of sweatpants that should have been retired years ago. “Too many blueberries, relax.” Shane said without looking up. “There is no such thing.” “There absolutely is when you are feeding all of them to the dog.” Anya looked up immediately at the sound of her title, enormous brown eyes alert and hopeful. The tiny girl sat perfectly between Ilya’s feet, tail brushing rapidly against the hardwood. “She is starving. my poor baby” Ilya informed him solemnly. “She ate breakfast already.” “She is growing girl.” “She’s six.” “Still growing, where you done growing at six? Did not think so.” Shane snorted quietly. Ilya grinned at the sound. It had been almost two months since they’d gotten married and somehow mornings still felt strange in the best possible way. Domesticity had settled over their lives slowly. It was coffee mugs left beside the sink. Grocery lists. Arguing over laundry settings until Shane pouted and Ilya caved. Falling asleep together every night without worrying who might find out. It was oatmeal on a Tuesday morning. Shane liked routines. He liked knowing what came next. His therapist called it grounding structure. Shane called it not feeling insane all the time. Ilya understood that now in a way he hadn’t ten years ago. “Did you answer Hayden?” Shane asked. “Mhm.” “What did he say about dinner Friday?” “He says if we make quinoa again he is not coming.” “That was one time.” “And it was awful the one time.” “You had three servings.” “Because I was hungry, not because quinoa deserves to be in my mouth, unlike other things.” Shane rolled his eyes. Anya huffed dramatically when no more blueberries appeared. “Oh, now she suffers.” Ilya murmured sympathetically, crouching to scratch behind her ears. “Cruel father deprives tiny princess.” “She’s getting to big.” “She is sturdy.” “She’s twelve pounds.” “Is all muscle. Isn't it малышка.” The oatmeal thickened enough for Shane’s liking. He turned the burner down and reached automatically toward the silverware drawer. The moment he pulled it open, the drawer let out a violent high-pitched shriek. It was sharp and metallic and unbearably loud. The sound ripped through the kitchen. Shane screamed. A full, horrified scream tore out of him as his entire body seized. It was like being burned. If had heard this in public he might have grimaced and bit into his lip way too hard, but he was at home. He could do this. The drawer slammed shut hard enough to rattle the cabinets. “Oh, fuck.” Ilya blurted. Shane had already stumbled backward, hands flying over his ears. His breathing turned ragged instantly, face drained white beneath the freckles scattered across his nose. “Shanya—” “Nope.” His voice cracked harshly. “Nope nope nope.”

Everyone at McGill knows three things: their hockey team is the best in the country, the Rozanov family could buy half of Montreal, and Shane Hollander is completely off limits. So when new students start asking Shane out after winter break, Ilya Rozanov decides he needs to put a stop to it. 19. “Sweetheart, your pretty little head is so silly. For every photocard I make of ugly hockey men, I make two of my gorgeous, radiant, pulchritudinous boyfriend. Sometimes three.”

A smile breaks through the heated haze of Shane’s expression. “You’ve been using the thesaurus Dad got you for Christmas?”

“I will beat Yuna Hollander at Scrabble one day,” Ilya declares against Shane’s hip bone.

In the year between the Cottage and the Centaurs, Ilya misses Shane more than ever. Svetlana’s teenage cousin offers a coping method: Kpop-style Shane Hollander photocards to stare at all day long. It's a shame carrying around pictures of fellow hockey players is just not socially acceptable.

    …At least, not yet.
