  2. Irina was always a perceptive woman.

Maybe this perceptive, brilliant woman noticed how Ilya looked at boys.

Maybe that was the final straw, maybe she couldn’t handle the grief of having a son who loved boys. Maybe that’s why Ilya stumbled on his mother’s body a few days after realising he looked at boys like he could love them too.

or, ilya, religion, queerness and trying to do guesswork about someone who is long gone.

  4. Shane had told his manager, verbatim, that he “trusts her judgment” to pick the opener for his first ever world tour.

Her “judgment” shows up to soundcheck with a parking ticket in his hand and a crimson hickey on his neck. Her “judgment” is Russian DJ, Ilya Rozanov.

  5. Shane wasn’t his boyfriend. But for a while it had felt like it. They’d been alone in his house. He’d made them tuna melts and watched TV. They’d cuddled like a real couple. And then he had to go and ruin it. Like he ruins everything. The press won't stop talking about Shane and Rose. He's turning into his mother and for some reason, Scott Hunter is the only one who sees him. And it scares him.

    OR

Ilya spirals after the tuna melt scene and engages in self-destructive behaviors. Scott Hunter notices and refuses to go away.

  7. Most days it felt like Alexei didn’t want a younger brother at all—like he would have been happier if Ilya had never been born, or if he’d gotten a brother that was less clingy, less soft.

But Alexei could’ve pushed him down the stairs and broken every bone in his body, and Ilya would’ve probably begged him to do it again, if it meant he’d spend more time with him.

or: Ilya's father doesn't die during the 2016/2017 season. His brother does.

  8. The name of your soulmate only appears once your realize you are in love with them.
"Shane Hollander" appears on Ilya's chest before the Sochi Olympics. He tells nobody, and then he disappears.

Six months later, Shane gets a call from an unknown number. Ilya. In Montreal, and completely different.
It doesn't matter, though, and the next morning there's a line of Cyrillic across his chest.

    Timeline goes back and forth.

  9. Shane heard a strangled shout tear free from his mouth, and then his body was moving without his brain’s input. He flew across the ice, ripping his gloves off and reaching for Ilya’s throat. He wrapped his fingers around the warm skin, feeling the flow of blood pulse harder with each beat of Ilya’s heart. His eyes raced across Ilya’s face, desperately looking for a sign that his boyfriend was still with him. Ilya’s eyes were wide and glazed, staring past Shane instead of at him. His face was losing color rapidly, turning a sickly shade of white that mirrored the ice beneath him. His mouth was open, loose and slack, mouthguard still jammed into his upper jaw. Shane watched in terror as Ilya grew limper in his arms.
    ——————————————————
During a Boston-Montreal game, Ilya's neck is cut by a skate, and Shane is forced to witness the love of his life bleeding out on the ice in front of him. All of the plans they have made seem to be slipping away before his eyes, right when they were so close to finalizing Ilya's transfer to Ottawa. As they race against the clock to save Ilya's life, Shane reckons with the secrets they have been forced to keep and fears that they might never get to live their truth out in the open.

  10. “I used to be so mad that she was gone sometimes, but it’s okay. I forgive her. I would forgive her every time.”

Something in Yuna’s eyes fractures, like a bird bone under the sole of a shoe. “Your mother is very lucky, then.”

“Yuna,” Ilya says, and he tries very hard to not look at Shane, to not see the unforgiving, enduring hurt in his eyes when he looks over at his mother, so far away from her that he can’t come home, even though he desperately wants to. He looks at Yuna instead, and somehow, even as he braces against the ice-cold concrete and lets the sound of the whistling wind settle in his ears and has been looking at her for a long time now, he finds himself entirely unprepared for familiar Yuna’s eyes will be when she turns her gaze from the distant streetlamp to him. “You’re very lucky too.”

Shane Hollander is a ghost with a comatose body that won't work, unable to move on because his mom won't come visit him. Ilya Rozanov is the only person who can see and hear him, and against all odds, this is still a love story.

  11. Rozanov wanted to hurt himself, or tried to hurt himself, or did hurt himself. Acknowledging the idea feels like staring directly at the sun. If Shane lets the thought settle, it’ll burn its way through every other thought he has.

Rozanov is catching a pillow that Sveta throws at him and smiling. He told Shane that therapy is working. He’s here. He’s fine.

Shane takes careful breaths and taps his right thumb to his fingers one by one as he sets aside that confusion and terror. Rozanov did not invite him here to freak out, so Shane’s not going to freak out.

  12. Ilya Rozanov has always understood the power of a name.

On the ice, it’s a threat.
    In headlines, it’s a brand.
    In Boston, it’s a chant.

But in Moscow, it was once a lullaby.
And in Shane Hollander’s voice, it becomes something softer. Something dangerous. Something that makes Ilya want more than he was ever meant to have.

From a golden kitchen in Moscow to the roar of Boston crowds, from hotel rooms and tuna melts to hospital monitors and wedding vows, this is the story of how a boy who learned what silence feels like finds someone who refuses to stop saying his name.

And maybe—just maybe—that’s what saves him.

  13. Ilya feels like a zombie; he’s an approximation of something living.

He knows what this is, of course. He isn’t stupid. He was just a child when he watched the life bleed out of his mama, long before she stopped breathing. He watched her sweet smiles grow hollow, and her kind eyes fall blank. He felt her slipping through his fingertips like grains of sand in an hourglass; her time was up before Ilya had truly even realised that it was running out.

When he looks in the mirror, he sees her staring back at him: blond hair, and blue eyes, and an emptiness that kills.

  14. “We knew when his words came in that he’d–” Yuna’s voice cracked around the idea, that specific word escaping her. “That he won’t have to know what it feels like to lose his soulmate.”

Because Shane was always going to go first. How must it have felt, to look upon her son and see those words, and know with complete certainty he would go first? Maybe it was better, having as vague of a word as Ilya did on his chest. At least he couldn’t think about it, couldn’t imagine scenarios in which it could be said.

“I assume,” Yuna said, pausing to take a deep breath as though to steel herself, “he said yours last night.”

Ilya nodded, admitting what he didn’t dare say out loud.

  15. “If it ever gets bad,” he’d said quietly, eyes serious in a way that made Ilya’s chest ache, “you call me. Or you call my parents. You don’t get to drown by yourself anymore. They love you. I love you and that’s not conditional.” Ilya had brushed it off at first. He always did. “I am not drowning.” Shane had just tilted his head. “Promise me anyway.” And because it was Shane, because the word promise meant something sacred to him, Ilya had nodded. “I promise.” (ie. ilya gets sent a photo of irina while shane is in montreal and does the right thing and reaches out for help)

  18. Ilya was a machine. He was an animal trained. He brought the cigarette up to his lips and sucked in. His chest burned. Yesterday the door was ajar when he passed by his parents’ bedroom. Standing still in the hallway he watched for a minute as his mother, sitting like a soldier at her vanity, used her fingers to spread a thick peach-colored paint across her left cheekbone and around her eye. Ilya took another breath. He lit his lungs on fire.
