Ilya feels his phone buzz a few times on his way to the elevator, probably everyone confirming they are on the move. He waits until the doors close to check who their group will be tonight.

Sequel to Breathing Room
Ilya Rozanov has spent five years holding Shane Hollander at arm’s length - not because he didn’t love him, but because he loved him too much to ask him to risk everything for something that could fall apart. He was good at that: the careful distance, the walls that looked like indifference, the way he’d learned to be close without being close. He’d had a lot of practice.
What he didn’t have practice for was what came after he was done lying to himself. He didn’t have practice for this - for something warm and bright and absolutely terrifying. Something that fits in the spaces between games and cities and the distance between Boston and Raleigh. Something that makes Ilya think, for the first time in a long time, that maybe the risk is worth it.
He just needs to figure out what to do with it all before their careers swallow them whole
He doesn’t get the chance to think about it for very long.

Shane knows that the opinion of one eighth grade girl from the Boston suburbs is not the thing that will make or break his career. It would matter exactly the same if she was from Montreal, or Texas, or the moon. Which is to say, not at all. She’s not even a hockey fan. Her opinion and her comment are nothing.
It doesn’t feel like it’s nothing, though.
Or, it's 2014. Everyone's doing the Ice Bucket Challenge.

Shane Hollander arrives in Vegas with a question he hasn’t spoken out loud.
It isn’t complicated, exactly. It’s just the kind of question that requires honesty he isn’t sure he’s ready for - about what he and Ilya Rozanov have been doing for the past few years, about what six months of silence after Sochi actually meant, and about whether any of it is worth staying close to or whether he finally needs to go.
He gets his answer in a locked bathroom at the NHL Awards.
Ilya spends the summer convinced that Shane is fine. Upset? Yes. Angry? Definitely. But Shane always felt things fiercely despite what everyone said about him when he had his back turned. He’d calm down over the summer and then he’d be there like he always had been. He fills the silence with discipline and routine and the comfortable certainty that later is still available to him.
He’s wrong.
By the time Ilya understands what he actually lost, Shane is already gone; and Ilya is left trying to find a way back to someone who closed the door long before Ilya had ever thought to just walk through it.

Rozanov wanted to hurt himself, or tried to hurt himself, or did hurt himself. Acknowledging the idea feels like staring directly at the sun. If Shane lets the thought settle, it’ll burn its way through every other thought he has.
Rozanov is catching a pillow that Sveta throws at him and smiling. He told Shane that therapy is working. He’s here. He’s fine.
Shane takes careful breaths and taps his right thumb to his fingers one by one as he sets aside that confusion and terror. Rozanov did not invite him here to freak out, so Shane’s not going to freak out.
Or: The summer after he wins the Cup for Boston, Ilya almost dies. Shane tries to cope.

6 Months by Nituaii

Shane didn't know what he should say, what he could say. They hadn't talked since that night, hadn't been in contact much. Which at first hadn't worried Shane. It wasn't unusual for them to go longer periods of time without contact, and especially with the Olympics looming so close, with them both being chosen for their teams, it had only seemed logical to focus on their duties. He hadn't worried. Had lived in that blissful state of finally knowing what it felt like to be taken, of sharing the arguably most intimate part of himself with someone he trusted. Knew he could trust. Thought he could trust. OR: What happened during those 6 months when Ilya ignored Shane? How did that time change things for Shane?

“Hollander.” Shane’s head snaps back to his left. Ilya is much closer, pace slightly hurried. “Come here.” His voice sort of mimics the way one would talk to an animal paralyzed in fight-or-flight. Shane is not sure what to make of that. He slowly turns his head in the opposite direction, where his vision tunnels on the door for the stairwell. It almost glows like a special item in a video game, like a hint. Without giving himself time to doubt, he bolts. “Wha- Hollander, what the fuck!” Ilya shouts in audible disbelief, and Shane distinctly hears matching thuds of frantic footsteps behind him; Ilya is chasing after him. Shane runs faster, positively sprinting at this point. He’s the fastest skater in the NHL right now. He can do this. He flings the door open and bounds down the steps two at a time, hitting the walls with each turn of a corner. If he eats shit on this filthy floor and embarrasses himself in front of Ilya, he thinks, he’ll never let himself see the light of day ever again. or alternatively, in which Shane accidentally sends the text, and Ilya chases after him. Like, actually chases after him.

It’s a dick move and right now Ilya is glad he has a reputation as a dick, so no one asks too many questions. You’re supposed to pick someone that fucked up a bit, someone the team is already kind of mad at. Picking a team’s captain, especially when he hasn’t done anything wrong—you don’t do that. Or: Ilya notices that Hollander is off his game, and decides that a visit to the winner's room just might fix that. Ilya Rozanov has been watching Shane Hollander, and he doesn’t like what he sees. He’s been losing, for one thing. The Metros start the 2015 season with a string of losses, and though some of it is because of things outside Hollander’s control—an injured goalie, a rookie that keeps letting passes through—even the commentators are saying that Hollander hasn’t been himself, hasn’t been playing like everyone knows he can. He’s fumbling through games with none of his usual fire, and it has everyone scratching their heads and asking why. It’s been on the tip of Ilya’s tongue, to ask why. He’s opened their text thread more times than he can count, started typing out a question. Every time, he deletes it. They haven’t spoken since Las Vegas. The time has built up in the silence between them, calcified. No one likes losing. Ilya knows this, knows that if it were him he wouldn’t be handling it any better. He’d be handling it differently—he still remembers the bruised knuckles and sour stomach from his last losing streak, the fist fights in bars and the broken bottles of bad liquor —but he’d be a mess too. It still rankles though. Hollander is supposed to be the sensible one; he doesn’t get to crash out like this. It’s not right. Ilya needs to do something about this. ** Step one: in the next game they play against each other, crush the Metros in a humiliating 5 to 1 defeat. It’s not that hard to do. The Metros put up a token resistance in the first period, but they crumble after Ilya makes his first goal, and then all the momentum is on the Bear’s side. Hollander certainly doesn’t try all that hard to stop him. It makes Ilya’s teeth itch to see Hollander sleep walking through the game, taking abuse without even chirping back. He doesn’t look at Hollander as the seconds tick down, as the fans cheer and moan, as the talking heads once again loudly ask each other what’s gotten into Montreal’s golden boy. He only lets himself sneak a glance at Hollander after, when the spectators have all gone and the two teams are left behind in the empty stadium. Hollander’s not looking at him, just staring down at the ice. Well, all according to plan. He’s going to have to look at Ilya by the end of the night. Ilya offers the Metros his biggest winning smile, the one they put on the covers of magazines when the advertisers want him to play at being a charming rogue. “Was fun, yes?” One of the Metros—Renaud, he thinks—rolls his eyes. “Who do you want? For the Winner’s Room.” He pretends to think about it, gives himself a second so it’s not quite so obvious that he woke up today knowing that he needed to win, just so he could do this. “Let’s say… Hollander.” The Metros line erupts in angry murmurs and some of the hotter heads make abortive moves towards him, knuckles creaking as they grip their sticks. They’ve got a point. In fact, Hollander would be well within his rights to say no. Players have rights, after all. This isn’t the 80s; you can opt out. But Ilya knows Hollander won’t say no. The way his shoulders hunch in on themselves, the way he’s staring at the ice—Ilya can tell he’s carrying the entire loss on his back, this one and all the others, never mind that half his line men couldn’t find the fucking puck when it was right in front of them. Part of Ilya is hoping Hollander takes the out, tells him to fuck off. But only part. He stretches his smile wider, leans in to rest his chin on his stick. “If Hollander is too chicken, I can take your new kid instead.” He spares a wink for the rookie in question. The poor kid looks absolutely miserable, like it’s his fault that the entire team’s defense collapsed in the third period. “Yeah, no, that’s not necessary.” And finally Hollander is looking at him, glaring up through dark lashes. A bit of fire back in his eyes, and there’s a cut on his lip bleeding slightly. Ilya wants to bite it. “Shane, man, come on,” Pike says, placing a hand on Hollander’s shoulder. Hollander shrugs the hand off with a bit-back wince. “It’s fine. I can handle it.” Pike tries again. “Shane—” “I said I could handle it.” “Don’t worry,” Ilya puts in, “I promise I won’t break him.” Pike bites back a curse; Dagenais spits at him. But Hollander doesn’t say anything at all. He tries again. Leers at Hollander, licks his lips suggestively. “We’re going to have fun together, aren’t we, Captain?” Tell me to fuck off! Ilya wants to scream. Call me an asshole, you know you want to! But Hollander doesn’t say anything at all, just stares at him with those same wounded eyes before giving a dazed nod and turning away, back to the locker room. ** Yeah, okay, Ilya was laying it on a bit thick. So all in all, it’s not really a surprise when he exits the Raiders’ locker room and runs into three of the Metros waiting for him with murder

Shane lingered in the doorway, holding out for the chance that any second now Rosanov would come around the corner and lead Shane back to his bed. That he would help with the feeling of despair and emptiness that had hit Shane the moment Rosanov had taken his hands off Shane and reached for his damn pack of cigarettes. Refusing to look at him. Refusing to touch him, the space between their bodies felt like it was ten miles wide even as Shane could feel Rosanov’s cum drying on his skin. Usually, Rosanov would at least clean him up before ending their nights together, but apparently Shane wasn’t even worth that courtesy anymore. There was a sudden feeling of hotness behind his eyes at that thought. AKA a post-episode two subdrop fix-it fic
