    Shane feels no particular way about this turn of events. He really, honestly, mostly is somewhat close to believing that, too. It's progress.

    Given the chance to grow up with rather than against each other, Shane and Ilya build a life thats steadier, safer, and far less frightening than their canon. Their rivalry fizzles before it ever has the chance to fully ignite, replaced by hockey’s most beloved “bromance", and in 2015, they find the courage to do the one thing their canon counterparts never got to do: tell the NHL and the world.

    There is just one problem: No one believes them.

Very rarely was her first impression wrong, and her first impression of Shane Hollander told her that he was going to be very, very important to her in the not-so-distant future.

    Svetlana learns that Jane is Shane Hollander at the start of the 2017-2018 hockey season. She immediately decides that she and Shane are going to be friends. After all, Ilya is her best friend, and Shane is love of her best friend's life; it just makes sense to be his friend, too. She's pretty sure that's how it works.

    Over the following years, she gets a few opportunities to solidify that friendship, and help both Shane and Ilya feel a little less lonely.

    Shane turned his TV to mute with a trembling hand, the ESPN panel discussing his integrity silenced but still loudly gesticulating on his screen. "Hi, Svetlana," he said.

    "I told Ilya not to go to Ottawa, too, but he thinks he's more romantic than he is. He wants nothing more than to suffer for love. Idiot."

    So, I'm trying something a little different with this new installment in the series, and I know it won't be everyone's cup of tea.

    As much as I adore M/M, I've always wanted to throw my hat into the very small pool of Female!Shane/Male!Ilya stories. I've also been itching to write the actor!Shane trope for quite some time, so I finally decided to combine the two.

    Another reason I wanted to write this fic is that, while I absolutely love exploring Shane's Japanese heritage, I realized I've been neglecting Ilya's Russian heritage throughout this series. I wanted to give that side of him more attention here and explore it in a way I haven't before.
