  1. Shane Hollander has a laundry list of problems at any given time, and being a vampire (while keeping it a secret) is pretty consistently at the top of the list. His top problem right now, though? How much he really wants to sink his teeth into Ilya Rozanov, in every possible way.

Before practice, Shane is caught off guard by the devastating news of an abrupt plane crash that took the lives of five Raiders players, including Ilya's. Unable to explain his grief to those closest to him, he retreats into himself, becoming a ghost of the person they loved until he's pushed to the brink of his own unmanageable pain.

    ---

“The Raiders Plane Crashed,” was what he had heard in the locker room. From Comeau, specifically.

Shane was pretty sure he kept talking, but if he was being honest, he didn’t hear anything past that. He just stared at his teammate’s lips moving, no sound seeming to reach his ears aside from the heavy thudding of his own heartbeat in them. There was this urge to snatch the phone out of his hand and read the news article for himself growing as the locker room managed to warp around him. But he couldn’t move, fear paralyzing him.

“You alright?” Hayden questioned, his voice tearing through the sharp silence his mind had forced upon him.

Shane flinched as he felt his friends hand on his shoulder, the sudden contact making him even more ill to his stomach. He didn’t dare try to nod or lie and say he was.

  3. "You will bend for me many times, I think, before this production is over." Shane means to say no. He means to tell Ilya Rozanov—arrogant Bolshoi principal dancer and professional pain in his ass—to fuck off and stop moving set pieces without permission. Instead, he ends up on his knees in a dressing room, which is definitely not how the Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s stage manager is supposed to handle conflict resolution. Three weeks until opening night. One impossible rivalry. And absolutely no way this ends well. or: Ilya comes to Winnipeg for The Nutcracker. Shane tries very hard to hate him. The mind- blowing hate-sex doesn’t help.

  4. “I’m Shane. Hollander. Vampire hunter,” The introduction would be madness anywhere else. But Shane had ducked out to catch his breath, exhausted from the constant stream of networking and chatter with other vampire hunters. He was a newly minted hunter and beamed with pride to tell anyone about it. He was certain this stranger wouldn’t be scandalised but when he held out his hand, they just stared at it.

“Ilya Rozanov,” he introduced himself, then flashed Shane a wicked smile, “vampire.”

Shane hunts feral vampires. Ilya is a vampire, but Shane's not interested in hunting him - no, he wants something far more dangerous. When the lines of their rivalry start to blur, they find themselves entangled in an age old conflict that will have far-reaching consequences.

Bridgeford is a small, quiet town. Too dull to hold someone like Ilya, a restless young alpha always chasing something sharper, faster, louder. Too suffocating for Shane, an omega who’s spent too long under watchful eyes, tired of being seen as a social case just because he's an omega.

One last summer. That's all they both have to live through before they're both off to the big city. That was the plan.

Until fate pulls a few strings, and suddenly, two complete strangers feel drawn to each other in all the wrong ways.

  6. Shane Hollander meant nothing to Ilya Rozanov. And the oh-so-perfect son of the major, society’s sweetheart, had little to nothing to do with a Russian immigrant barely getting by, working at the factories. Sure, they have been fucking for over half a decade, but that...that was just fucking. Ilya knew that. It was just stolen moments, in dark alleys and shady motels. It meant nothing.

So why did it hurt so much to see Shane with his perfect, pretty fiancée at the pub?

    or

After hearing about Shane's engagement, Ilya gets drunk and hooks up with a man. But he isn't careful enough, and the police arrest him for sodomy. Shane does everything in his power to get him out of prison.

  7. Ilya hadn’t known the video existed. If he had known, he would have paid someone to have it destroyed. Would have paid someone to murder Kuznetsov, maybe, just for redundancy's sake. But it was peak stupidity, to keep evidence of your homosexual perversion around in a country where that crime could get you sent to jail for several decades, and Ilya hadn’t thought that Kuznetsov would be that dumb.

Now here Ilya was, watching a video of his fourteen-year-old self on Twitter getting fucked by his former hockey coach.

So. There go the plans for the rest of his life.

    -

Or: in 2018, during Ilya's last year with the Raiders, an old video is leaked on Twitter. Ilya reacts, or overreacts. Shane does, too.

  9. Shane thinks about Ilya; thinks about the glorious gasping surprise of Shane and considers that he has made an absolutely fucking massive mistake somewhere along his way here but he has no idea what it was. Behind his eyelids he thinks about his own name choked out like a confession and thinks about the Ilya that seemed to come so naturally, and wishes desperately that he'd done something differently. Something, almost anything, but he doesn't know what, can't pin the thought down. He has no idea what he's wishing for except for different.

As it turns out, once they're in motion there's nothing that can keep his eyes open, and he sleeps.

There's a dream that feels like turning inside out, like stretching and rebounding, like a path cleared and his is the first skate that touches the ice after the Zamboni leaves it, and he wakes —

    He wakes.

Head thick and foggy until he shakes it and it clears, but he wakes —

    — and they're back at the hotel.

  10. It had been almost two years since Shane had stepped foot in the Bell Centre in Montreal. It felt like an entirely different place through the visiting team entrance. Ilya played with Mishka ears for a moment, then sighed dramatically. “Fine, I will go to Montreal.” “What?” Shane’s heart skipped a beat. “I’m not asking you to.” “You think I’m a bad husband?” Or: Shane plays Montreal for the first time, and it goes about as well as expected. 11. “Where are you going?”

“To the arena, Hollander. We are playing a game in three hours.”

“That’s tomorrow, Rozanov,” Hollander says, smirking like Ilya might be fucking with him and he wants to make sure he’s in on the joke. He looks behind and around him. “Um, can I come inside?”

“Hollander, we have game today. You were here yesterday.”

Hollander is striding toward his kitchen, looking over his shoulder at Ilya like he’s getting tired of the joke. “Very funny. I was in Montreal yesterday, Rozanov.”

“Hollander.” Ilya goes to stand in front of him. Hollander’s eyes flicker up and down his body the way that Ilya usually craves, but is rather unwelcome right now. “Today is Thursday. Game is today. Yesterday, you came to my house. We ate tuna melts, watched Buffalo game. Then, you left.”

“Rozanov, it’s Wednesday morning. And I’ve never been to your house before.”

    “Hollander…”

“Look at your phone if you don’t believe me.”

Ilya snorts like a bull and pulls his phone out of his pocket, swipes down on the screen to look at the date.

  12. It happens six months after their wedding.

Scott has never been happier in his entire life. Things were amazing for a little while there, so picture-perfect in all areas of his life that it felt almost too good to be true. Too easy. Somehow, it ends well. *** He hears a sharp breath being sucked in and a cold, decidedly female voice states “Ilya Rozanov.” It feels like a bucket of ice-water has been dropped on his head, chilled tendrils crawling down his back. Shane should be here right now, should be in Ilya’s house. Ilya should be teasing him about being picky while going through delivery options for food on his phone. Shane should be discovering that Ilya has ginger ale in the fridge and the protein bars Shane mentioned liking in an interview in his pantry. He should be making out with Shane on the couch, sneaking a hand into his pants, teasing him about whether they can beat the deliveryman and arrive before he does. Shane was supposed to spend the night tonight, the Montreal team not set to leave until tomorrow afternoon because of potential bad weather in the morning. Shane should be fed and showered and ready to curl up in bed with Ilya tonight.
But Shane is in a hospital.

    And Ilya is here.

He pulls up Jane in his phone again. He presses call.

    “Hey, you’ve reached Shane Hollander-”

Ilya closes his eyes and lets Shane’s voice roll over him.

  16. The elevator was full. Too many people were packed in like sardines, and their suitcases just made the squeeze even more unbearable. JJ didn’t feel the need to add to it. He was six-foot-five and as wide as a brick wall. He didn’t want to be packed in there any more than they wanted to share the space with him.

He decided to take the stairs.

  17. “I am not scared,” he lies. Each word is soft but crisply enunciated so Shane can't miss them. “Do you want me scared?”

“Obviously not,” Shane snaps at him. He gestures toward Ilya's waist, toward the slim outline of what he had clocked as a folding knife the second Ilya started carrying it, and adds, “but I know you're not just ‘happy to see me.’ I want the truth, I need to hear that-” he chokes over his words, his lips moving too quickly for his brain to keep up. “Please, be honest with me, for once.”

For a long, silent moment, Ilya just stares at him, grinding his teeth behind a placid expression as if Shane can't tell.

He’s being cruel. There is no choice, he just is, no matter how much he hates it. It doesn’t help anything. He can’t stop it.

“Yes,” Shane hisses. “Fuck, yes. I’m a fucking winner,” he gasps.

  19. “Look,” Shane began, hitting the edge of the basin with the flat of his palm. “I don’t know if I did something to piss you off, or…or what, but you’re being fucking weird. The phonecall? And this? What is this?”

Before he’d even really processed Shane’s words, Ilya was standing directly in front of him, grabbing his lapels, pulling him closer. Then his shoulders sagged and their foreheads met. Ilya could feel Shane shift, moving away, but Ilya kept him still. It felt so good just to have Shane near again. “You would not believe me,” Ilya murmured.

Shane let his shoulders slump in acquiescence. He gave a little shrug. “I’m already having a tough time believing that you’re acting like this.” He laughed weakly, and Ilya envisioned what it would be like to tilt his head just slightly and press his lips to Shane’s. Would he reciprocate? Pull away? The latter. The latter. Obviously.

Or, after Ilya takes the girl from the club in Montreal back to his hotel room, he falls asleep wishing that he and Shane had never been anything at all, and wakes up to a world in which that’s true.

Shane stared up at the ceiling. Everything he’d been keeping inside for the last month was threatening to boil over into a ugly mess, and his eyes stung. “I thought that if I could just ignore it, it would go away. I thought that if I gave it more time, I’d keep myself from doing something drastic.”

He rubbed at his face and kept his hands there, a shield to protect him from the weight of the decision he couldn’t keep running from. “It’s been weeks, and I don’t know what to do. I feel sick every time I think about going back, but…” He looked at Ilya and saw the blue eyes there creased with concern, sadness, and that simmering anger at everything that had ever hurt Shane. He sniffed. “I don’t think I’m strong enough to leave. Leaving feels like giving up. But so does staying.”

“No.” Ilya shook his head and shuffled forward so his body was mirroring Shane’s, twin parentheses encompassing their shared years in between worn bodies. “No, my love.”

Or: After the playoffs end for Montreal and Ottawa, Shane has a decision to make. His relationship with the Metros is on thin ice, and it might take a couple Centaurs to break it for good.
