  6. Ilya calls Shane to debrief, from Cliff's bed... but apparently Shane doesn't want to hear about it.

    Shane wants to watch.

    ***

Right now, sprawled across Roz's chest with Roz's fingertips trailing across the nape of his neck, Cliff does not feel done. He's raw as fuck, limp as a rag. The intensity of it being Roz, not some anonymous hot chick, but Roz whose smile and voice and laugh he knows – having reduced Roz to senseless pleasure – is somehow a thousand times more affecting than even the wildest night with a bunch of puck bunny tens. Feeling Roz smile into his kisses. Hearing Roz curse and gasp. Being welcomed into Roz's body, Christ—he's never had sex like it. That was not just sex. That was… he doesn't know what that was, by the end. A religious experience?

Gun to his head, it could best be described as a monumental, life-ruining sex event… and now Roz is going to call Hollzy about it?! Recount the highlights, play by play, while Cliff's still reeling? Fuck! He's not sure he can stay chill with Ilya's accented voice narrating everything they've just done, while Hollzy listens and—and what? Reacts, judges? Ticks off a scorecard?

  7. Ilya has some stuff he needs to work out with Marly before he's letting him near Shane again.

This better not awaken something in him.

    Excerpt:
Marly looks good. Really fucking good, with his shirt open and his hair tousled. It looks like he hasn't shaved in three days. It reminds Ilya of the picture, the sculpted hairy chest and the hint of one dark nipple, the detail cruelly obscured. He's overly aware of how Marly fills out this shirt now, unfastened in a deep vee, the button straining. This never felt like a problem before, how good he looks. How… touchable.

Ilya orders them both a beer. Like usual. Like the last time he had seen this man, they hadn't both been balls-deep in Ilya's life partner.

  8. “Well…” Ilya grinned mischievously, “I know you were upset about not getting a nice WAG basket. I am not sure if I did this right, though.” He stood up and grabbed the first and smallest basket and handed it to Shane who was still sitting on the couch. Nowadays most women just sent everything in a cardboard box. Ilya’s basket looked like one of the ones at the grocery store near Easter time, but tiny. It was woven and clumsily wrapped in cellophane. “The woman at the store said I needed a bag to put the basket in. I do not see the point of this, but for you I wanted the best, so I bought the bags.”

Long distance relationships are hard. Long distance relationships when no one knows you’re in one are the hardest. Shane and Ilya find creative ways to stay connected using the tradition of WAG baskets given to Voyageurs' players before playoffs.

  10. Ilya Rozanov, captain of the Boston Raiders, has a boyfriend. A definitely real, suspiciously (and boringly) handsome, conveniently offline, consistently unable to meet up in real life boyfriend.

    Who lives in Canada.

Unfortunately for him, absolutely no one believes him.

The more serious Ilya gets about his Totally Real Canadian Boyfriend™️, the more concerned his teammates become that someone either needs to call MTV and get him on the next episode of Catfish or that he's slowly losing his mind.

Shane Hollander is, fortunately, very real, very sarcastic, and increasingly delighted that an entire NHL locker room seems to think that he's a government psyop to distract Ilya from his game.

Shane was there when Ilya got the call, his arm heavy across Ilya's stomach, like even in sleep he could tell something was trying to take Ilya away from him.

  12. “Sweetheart, your pretty little head is so silly. For every photocard I make of ugly hockey men, I make two of my gorgeous, radiant, pulchritudinous boyfriend. Sometimes three.”

A smile breaks through the heated haze of Shane’s expression. “You’ve been using the thesaurus Dad got you for Christmas?”

“I will beat Yuna Hollander at Scrabble one day,” Ilya declares against Shane’s hip bone.

In the year between the Cottage and the Centaurs, Ilya misses Shane more than ever. Svetlana’s teenage cousin offers a coping method: Kpop-style Shane Hollander photocards to stare at all day long. It's a shame carrying around pictures of fellow hockey players is just not socially acceptable.

    …At least, not yet.

  14. Shane Hollander has been eating the same way for eight years. He has a framework. It has a name, research behind it, years of evidence in his performance numbers. He made an appointment because he is a professional, and professionals address things when they become inefficiencies.

Only Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov know what lives underneath it.

When someone calling themselves The Loon begins leaving cryptic and threatening messages, Shane and Ilya understand two things:

    Someone knows.

And they cannot ask for help without explaining why.

The Loon believes something sacred has been corrupted.

  17. Ilya Rozanov is an incredibly skilled and famous hockey player, maybe the best in the league. He’s known for being captain of the team in Ottawa, for being constantly surrounded by adoring fans, and for being kind of an asshole. Shane Hollander is the founder and director of a charity hockey school in Montreal. He loves his job and takes it very seriously, which leaves little time for socializing or just about anything else. Ilya and Shane cross paths when Ilya’s manager insists on boosting his public image with a little charity work. The two don’t exactly click, yet they can’t stop thinking about each other. Mutual attraction turns into a hook up, and then another, and then suddenly a positive pregnancy test. Shane and Ilya have to figure out how to navigate this complicated situation, and in the process discover the feelings they have for each other are a lot deeper than they thought.

The brush off Shane received when he suggested Ilya try medication was hardly surprising to him. What he found shocking was that he had actually done it. Without telling Shane, no less. And if that wasn't startling enough, finding out the entire hockey community knew because of one ill-timed picture Cliff Marlow took practically knocked him off balance.
    ---
“Who knew Rozanov would be the poster boy for Prozac?” Hayden muttered with a huff. “God, he’s gotta be floating on cloud nine with that dose. Normal people take like what, ten or twenty? Sixty must mean he was damn near suicidal.”

“Probably,” JJ agreed, shrugging. “I wouldn’t know, I don’t need to medicate myself to cope with life.”

“If he’s all doped up, how come he’s still always such an asshole?” one of the rookies questioned, earning a few laughs.

Shane just felt sick to his stomach. And angry. At his team and Marlow and mostly at himself. Ilya had done exactly what he asked and now, he was getting mocked for taking care of himself. In what world was that fair?

“Maybe that’s why he’s so aggressive on the ice,” another theorized. “He's trying to kill himself and take another player with him to make it look like an accident.”

  20. This is worse, somehow, than every other goodbye from the past eight years.

Worse, to have all of Ilya now and not be able to touch him.

It’s been two hours since they last kissed and weeks until they’ll get to again and there aren’t enough ‘I love you’s in the world to make this hurt less.

Ilya is just looking at him, glassy-eyed and a little desperate, and Shane’s hands creak on the steering wheel.

“You need to get out of the car before I do something stupid,” he croaks, squeezing his eyes shut against the tears he can already feel welling up.

“Like what?” Ilya asks, voice scratchy and morose.

“Like turn around and drive you back to Montreal with me.” He opens his eyes again, finding Ilya’s gaze across the console. “Or kiss you.”
