  1. Bood only laughs and lets the video loop over from the start, reaching out to clap a hand down onto Ilya’s shoulder. “You’ll understand one of these days, kid.”

Ilya's beer tastes sour on his tongue.

I already understand, Ilya thinks desperately. I have a daughter and she is the best thing to happen to me except for the man that I made her with and I am full of so much love that I could burst.

And he can say none of it out loud.

  2. “No, malyshka. Not sad.” Ilya turns and kisses her palm. “I am happy.”

Ilya stills after the words leave his mouth, skin prickling with warmth. He means it, he realizes.

He’s spent so much of the last decade convincing himself that he was not sad. But being happy, being happy like this—effortlessly, accidentally, on purpose—is different. Ilya can’t remember the last time he’d thought it and meant it. I am happy.

    “Ilya?” Shane asks softly.

“I’m okay. I—” Ilya sniffs, wipes at his cheeks. It’s all useless when he looks down at Emi again, when he sees himself staring back. His lip trembles. “My mama would have loved her.”

  3. Shane Hollander goes on LTIR just before the Sochi Olympics with no public statement and an outpour of fan theories and media speculation. For the next two years of radio silence, Ilya grapples with the ghost of a relationship that could never be but almost was, wondering what he’d done wrong, yes—but mostly just coming to terms with the fact that his worry fits best by another name; one that neither of them can afford to call it.

In 2017, Shane returns to reclaim his position on the ice opposite Ilya, but things are different now. Ilya worries that there's someone else, and there is.

Just not in the way he'd expected.

  4. Ilya can’t be so separate from it all anymore, can’t get by on hotel room visits and brief phone calls when they’re in different time zones. It isn’t enough. Not anymore. Not when every iteration of the future they could have waiting for them one day had collapsed in on itself when Shane hit the ice.

Ty moya zhizn', his mother used to tell him. But it isn’t quite enough in this sense, Ilya decides. He looks at Shane, at Emi, and he thinks instead: Ty moya prodolzhenie.

Not just you are my life, but you are my future.

  5. Shane is still learning that he doesn't have to be perfect in his own relationship. Ilya is still learning the rules of Shane's bad days. So when Shane tries to push him away after a crushing loss, it leads to a tense argument. But ten years of rivalry are no match for Shane’s tears; the second he starts to cry, Ilya folds like a house of cards. Or: Shane tries to starve himself as punishment for losing, Ilya tries to feed him, and it turns into a very soft night of pampering because Ilya is legally incapable of staying angry at a crying Shane.

  6. Ilya Rozanov has a "tiny car accident" (his words). Shane Hollander has a full-scale, system-shutdown panic attack about it. Meanwhile, a horrified Hayden is praying for someone to throw him in a lake and tell him that this is all just a big joke, or maybe for a meteor strike; he is really not picky. J.J., on the other hand, is trying to bleach the image of his sweet captain making out with Ilya fucking Rozanov from his brain.

It's a very normal day for the Montreal Voyageurs.
