Finally, something dawns on him, a way to handle two goals simultaneously. He’d seen Hollander’s mother flipping through papers rapidly when they first got here, seeming calm and in control and more than a little frightening in a way that made Ilya mildly glad he wasn’t one of the people responsible for a clipboard. If anyone can tell him if the long list of “Prohibited Items” he’d been sent in his email a few days ago is just standard practice for big shoots, it would be Yuna Hollander.
Or, hopefully, her son.
“Crazy we cannot even have peanut butter, eh?” He asks. “You also got giant list?”
Hollander stiffens, almost imperceptibly, and Ilya tilts his head, just slightly, confused, wondering if he’s stumbled somewhere unexpected.

“-moya rybka, I am sorry, sweet girl-” Ilya is saying, on his knees in the middle of their living room and patting the rug near him with what looks like devastation on his face as Anya continues to ignore him, curled up on Shane’s lap instead. Fresh off of several stacked events to fit them into a weekend–because Shane’s mom is nothing if not efficient when it comes to the deals she makes–Ilya got home only a few minutes ago, still in the outfit he’d left his Buzzfeed puppy interview in, which Anya had clearly not appreciated, sniffing him suspiciously after her initial excited greeting and then retreating to Shane immediately when he patted his thigh in welcome.
Shane is trying not to be obviously enjoying Ilya’s turmoil as much as he is, shifting Anya to lay on her back like a baby in one arm and cooing at her.
“I know, huh? Papa left and played with who knows how many other dogs, and the whole time you were here missing him. I bet he wasn’t even thinking about you, huh?”
“Hollander!” Ilya says, sounding scandalized. “Do not tell her that! Is not true!”

It occurs to Shane, distantly, that he’ll have to wear the defaced jersey and his sweaty uniform pants if he wants to leave the locker room. He really, really wants to leave the locker room.
His feet won’t move, though, like the bottom half of his body is suddenly made of lead, while the rest of him twists uncontrollably in the wind. His head feels like it’s floating off into outer space.

Things get worse for Shane after he and Ilya get outed to the world. Ilya and the Centaurs help soften the blow.

Something about Ilya’s words still rang through his head though, sounding so definitive that he didn’t want to risk seeing what he was actually referring to when he said that. The puck dropped again, and Ilya stole it before he could comprehend how quickly it happened.

"Oh god," someone else said loudly, watching the flames continue to consume the house. Shane vaguely heard them talk, but the words in his head were all Ilya, Ilya, Ilya. "Ilya's in there!" Shane didn't even process that he was now screaming. He was too focused on getting to Ilya, on why the body he'd spent so many years working on wasn't strong enough to burst through the barricade. A window suddenly blew out, and Shane was staggering like he was in the room, his body slumping towards the ground before his mother's arms caught him.

Shane shakes his head before he even enters the room, seeing, unsurprisingly, Ilya leaned against the doorframe holding the garland in both hands directly under the mistletoe. “Is that so?” “Hmm, yes. Yuna said she wanted it on the mantle, and I don’t actually know where that goes.” he adds, sobering a touch with his actual question, but it doesn’t last long. “But I need you to come over here and help me. It is very important. For Christmas.” he adds and starts twirling the end of the garland with one hand. (ie. ilya is spending christmas with the hollanders for the first time and shane surprises him with misteltoe and ilya becomes a bit of a menace about it)
