Wishes For Lily by ItsMayBiTheWay
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid
2026-03-23
When Hayden celebrates his 26th birthday at the beginning of November, surrounded by family and close friends, he realizes he has nothing more to wish for. He has everything he needs, a perfect life. The only thing he regularly wishes for is for his best friend to have an equally perfect life, someone standing beside him. Someone who loves him and someone he loves. Hayden realizes he wants Lily to be here too, holding Shane’s hand as she takes her place around the table among family and friends. Closing his eyes, Hayden wishes that Shane could finally talk about his feelings with Lily. He wishes they would stop lying to each other and people in their lives about what they mean to each other. Six years is a long time to be causally seeing someone. Then he blows his candles.

Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov are solid.
Married. Stable. Established. The NHL’s favorite “we didn’t see that coming” love story turned domestic success.
They have a house. A dog that likes Ilya better. A shared calendar that Shane actually uses.
They’ve learned how to grocery shop without arguing about brands of pasta.
They are, objectively, fine.
Which is precisely the problem.
Somewhere between sponsorship shoots, playoff runs, and arguing over whose turn it is to unload the dishwasher, the fire that once burned hot enough to survive secrecy and rivalry has… softened. Not gone. Not broken. Just familiar.
Comfortable. Predictable. When a league marketing campaign crowns them “Hockey’s Ultimate Love Story” and assigns a documentary crew to follow them around for the season, Shane jokingly tells Ilya:
“Guess you’re going to have to fall in love with me again on camera.”Ilya smirks. “Please. I could make you fall in love with me again in one week.”
It’s a joke.
Until it becomes a challenge.

Uploaded to one of the biggest sports broadcasts in the entire industry, the Metro's are blindsided when texts between Shane and Rozanov are leaked one afternoon. They're even more surprised to find how many they have, how far back they span, and just how intimate they are.
---
“You know what I’m thinking about?” JJ asked with no specific person in mind.
“Please don’t say Ilya’s thighs,” Hayden pleaded, pinching the bridge of his nose.
“First of all, ew, no,” he replied instantly. “Second of all, don’t call him Ilya, it’s weird.”
“It’s his name!” Hayden retorted, defensively. “We should get used to using it considering he and Shane are…you know.”
Sleeping together sounded crass, but dating seemed too romantic, too. Not that there hadn’t been some pretty romantic texts to sort through. He couldn’t really figure out what the word that felt best was, or if there even was one.

There were many things about Shane's upbringing in Canada that Ilya found hard to understand. Like why he insisted on hiking into the brush to find the "perfect" marshmallow sticks for a bonfire. To Ilya, it seemed like a lot of unnecessary effort and a high risk of mosquito bites when they could just buy a pack of skewers and be done with it. But, like with everything that came with Shane Hollander, Ilya had learned to love it. And now here he was, years later, the one leading Shane and their kids through the woods behind the cottage on this warm summer evening. Or, Shane and Ilya take their kids on a weekend getaway to the cottage.

When Hayden's parents are injured while Jackie is away and none of his usual babysitters are available, new Ottawa resident Rozanov volunteers to watch the kids for the week. And to Hayden's shock, he finds himself desperate enough to agree to it.
---
“What about your wife?” Ilya wondered, his question soft to make sure he didn’t upset him again. “Can she not watch kids while you visit your parents?”Hayden, for a moment, furrowed his brows. He never heard that gentle of a tone from Rozanov before. Ever. He thought about snapping again, but frankly, felt a bit too tired for it. Instead, he just shook his head.
“She’s not even in the country,” he admitted. “And I can’t bother her after ruining her vacation last year.”
Ilya’s lips twitched, something akin to respect showing for a moment. “Alright, fine,” he muttered, sighing. “I take them.”
He blinked, scoffing. “What?” he responded in confusion.
“The kids, I take your kids,” Ilya clarified, gesturing between them. “How long will you be gone, a week? Two?” He leaned over, sorting through the other cart without permission to look at the snacks in comparison to what he already had at his house.

The problem was, Ilya couldn’t quite explain it himself. After a few minutes of ruminating, he finally settles on: Why do I want to eat my husband? Top result: Wife found guilty of cannibalising her husband, remains found in basement Ilya frowns down at his screen. Well that wasn’t it. He huffs quietly in frustration, before backspacing and trying again. Wanting to squish and bite my husband The search lags, and Ilya taps the tips of his thumbs impatiently against the screen, chewing on his bottom lip. Finally the page refreshes. Top result: Why boundaries in relationships are important Ilya rolls his eyes, on the verge of giving up. or Ilya has a severe case of cuteness aggression when it comes to his heavily pregnant husband, and he doesn’t quite know what to do about it.

“That’s not-” Shane starts, but he stops himself. Ilya tilts his head slightly in question, but Shane bites the inside of his cheek and then shakes his head slightly, cheeks flushing. “I do trust you,” Shane says.
“But not with your car?” Ilya asks. “You are afraid I will drive all the boring out of it?”
Shane rolls his eyes.
“It’s a good car-” He starts in another refrain of one of his favorite summer songs.
Ilya rolls them and pins his boyfriend under him before he has to hear about four wheel drive and gas mileage again.
There are far better uses for Shane’s mouth, after all.

Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid

Finally, Shane lifts his eyes from the computer screen. He removes his glasses, a move that Ilya silently mourns, and sets them aside. Shane's eyes are duller than usual, and the tiniest bit bloodshot. His cheeks are flush in a way that is not fun and sexy but reads more fever and germs.
He looks so tired.
“You, and do not take this the wrong way, look like shit.”
“Fuck off, Rozanov!”

Shane had memorized every version of Ilya’s face over the years. He remembered the way his face broke open when he saw him on TV winning his first Stanley Cup. He remembered the way he turned away and face contorted as he tried not to cry in front of Shane for the first time at that All Stars weekend all these years ago now. He remembered the soft vulnerability in Ilya’s eyes the first time they’d managed to choke out I love you. But seeing Ilya hold their son for the first time was a look Shane didn't have a name for yet. Or, Shane and Ilya are about to become dads for the first time. Ilya Rozanov is an incredibly skilled and famous hockey player, maybe the best in the league. He’s known for being captain of the team in Ottawa, for being constantly surrounded by adoring fans, and for being kind of an asshole. Shane Hollander is the founder and director of a charity hockey school in Montreal. He loves his job and takes it very seriously, which leaves little time for socializing or just about anything else. Ilya and Shane cross paths when Ilya’s manager insists on boosting his public image with a little charity work. The two don’t exactly click, yet they can’t stop thinking about each other. Mutual attraction turns into a hook up, and then another, and then suddenly a positive pregnancy test. Shane and Ilya have to figure out how to navigate this complicated situation, and in the process discover the feelings they have for each other are a lot deeper than they thought.

The urge to not leave with words unspoken encouraged Shane to open his mouth again, “But… I called you didn’t I?” Ilya’s gaze flicked to him, bright blue eyes shining wide, “Does Rose Landry know you are safe?” He asked, changing the subject. “I didn’t text her,” Shane replied, shaking his head. “Not… anything about me drinking.” “Your parents?” “No. I didn’t text anyone else. Just you.” He clarified, needing to get that point across. Didn’t that mean anything? Beneath the roiling irritation, Shane is pretty sure he’s going to feel stupid in about an hour about this argument.
Right now, though, he’s in the middle of it and annoyed enough to stay there.
“-any fucking sense,” he says, slapping the dishtowel in his hand down on the counter and only succeeding in winding himself up further when it hits a little puddle of dishwater that sprays droplets on him.
Unfortunately, the easiest outlet for this frustration is also the person who started this argument in the first fucking place: Ilya.
“It does not need to make sense,” Ilya says, arms crossed over his chest in a way that says he’s feeling just as ready to commit to the world’s most stupid fight about nothing as Shane is. “Is about feeling.”
“And you feel like you would love a worm?” Shane asks, mirroring Ilya’s posture in a way that’s meant to be mocking.
From the way Ilya’s jaw tightens, he noticed, and it sends a petty little thrill through Shane.

She's got her mouth open, too, ready to snap at him to leave, because Shane does not need this right now. He can come back, if he has to, when her son's less fucking vulnerable, high on painkillers and reeling from mood-swings; not that she thinks he will, which, good. Really, she's just about to, when Shane's voice sounds. "Ilyaaaaa!" he lets out delightedly. For another long moment, nobody moves. Rozanov's face has contorted. His brows are furrowed and he's looking only at Shane. Is he confused? Yuna's pretty damn confused. Because– "Il-yaaaa!" Shane repeats, loud and sounding – ecstatic, really. Absolutely ecstatic. Yuna stares at Shane's bruised face and tries, desperately, not to cry. She loves hockey, loves it with all her heart, is obsessed with Montreal and her son's career – but she hates it, too, when it leaves Shane broken, collapsed on the ice. It's not okay. It's never okay, seeing him there, helpless and hurt. It's even worse when she's not there. Yuna and David had been at home when it'd happened. They'd put the game on in the background, as they were wont to do with all of Shane's games, and Yuna'd been ironing as David made dinner, the two of them talking lightly together about nothing much. It'd been perfect, really. Her younger self would never have thought it, but she lives for those quiet evenings with her husband, easy and calm, the smell of good food wafting through the house and the croon of the speaker in the background. A good night, she'd thought. Shane'd been on his A-game. In the face-off, he'd stolen the puck from Rozanov, and raced across the ice, and he looked like he was really, truly enjoying it. He'd been smiling. Yuna'd remarked on it. Then, suddenly, silence. Yuna'd looked up at the sudden hush. The audience's usually a constant white noise, the calling and hooting and booing merging together into one dull sound. The commentators remarked on every pass Shane made, especially tonight, when they were playing Boston. Silence was never – ever – good. She hadn't known who it was at first. There was just a figure in a blue jersey, smashed onto the ice. She'd stood up, squinted. Was it Hayden? But no, PIKE was there, plastered on the back of the figure throwing himself onto the Boston player that'd caused the fall. Was it Gagnon? Then – "And Shane Hollander's down!" the commentator had announced, and everything in Y una went still. Shane's been injured before, of course. It's hockey. Yuna'd been forced to cope with it ever since Shane was nine and first bowled over by one of the other players – bigger than him, bulkier than him, always more aggressive than him. He usually gets up, though. He usually gets up. He doesn't this time. After that, everything blurred into one. David had sprinted upstairs, and he’d grabbed the overnight bag that they'd never used, that was needed only for emergencies, and then he'd been down and Yuna'd remembered how to breathe again and they were in the car, rushing- rushing-rushing to where their son was, miles away, being carted off to hospital in Montreal. They'd got there as soon as they could. It wasn't soon enough. But the doctor had calmed them, reassured them, told them, "Your son's alright, Mr and Mrs Hollander, he's just got a fractured collarbone and a mild concussion. Don't worry." Then he'd added, with a friendly grin, "He'll be out for the playoffs, though, I'm afraid." A Voyageurs fan. As if Yuna cared about the playoffs.–Shane would, though, she remembered, and told herself to give a brittle smile and thank him. She did. She's here, now, sat at his bedside. It's not a familiar position, not like it would be for a lot of hockey families. Shane's just that good. Yuna's overwhelmingly glad it's not. She doesn't think she could cope if he got himself in here every season. It's been a few hours since he'd first woken up, blinking dazedly at her and David, drugs pumping through his system to keep him relaxed and pain-free. It'd been startling, actually, the easy grin that slid onto his face when he'd spotted them. Shane'd smiled slow and smooth and genuine. It'd crinkled his eyes up and he’d been squinting, too, because of the bright lights, and he’d looked happy. Happy and loose in a way that made Yuna realise he was usually so, so tense; so, so stiff. He'd been slow to wake. He'd shifted, and grumbled to himself, and Yuna and David had rushed to his bedside to be right there when he finally blinked himself to consciousness. His head flopped a bit, and he’d muttered something she couldn't quite make out that sounded like "Ill-ya," and repeated it over and over again. She still doesn't know what it means. He'd stopped saying it when he realised she and David were there, had quietened down and looked at her and then beamed. Then his grin had gotten smaller, regulating, but he'd greeted them in a soft, slurred voice, and very quickly gotten tired again and drifted off. That'd been around midnight, Yuna thinks, maybe later. David had exhaled and kissed her and gone off to book them a hotel for a couple days. Yuna couldn't bring herself to go with him. Because he knows her, and he loves her, and probably because he feels better if Shane has one of them there, he'd gone without protest. She'll join him tonight, she thinks. When Shane's been awake for more than just a few minutes. She just sat with him, watching him breathe; she checks the clock and the heart-rate monitor every so often. She'd managed to get a few hours in around three a.m., crashing in the stiff armchair in the corner of the private room Shane's in, and she'd woke up again at half seven, her phone glaring in the dull dark of the room. One of the nurses must have switched the light off when they'd seen her asleep. Yuna's thankful. Now, the little numbers on the screen say 08:47. Visiting time's started. Not that anyone'll be by for a couple hours yet, thank God, because Yuna really can't deal with people right now. Except David. He should be here shortly too, the only saving grace. Him, she always wants by her side. As if summoned by her thoughts, there's a gentle knock at the door, and it's pulled open. David walks in, circles under his eyes, but they're certainly not as bad as hers are bound to be. His expression softens when he looks at her, and she smiles a little helplessly. "How's he doing?" he asks lowly. "Alright, I think," she says honestly. "But –" "It's never easy seeing him like this," David agrees. Yuna lets out an exhausted sigh. "Yes," she says. "Yes. Nothing's changed since you left. He's just..."
