  1. Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov are solid.

Married. Stable. Established. The NHL’s favorite “we didn’t see that coming” love story turned domestic success.

They have a house. A dog that likes Ilya better. A shared calendar that Shane actually uses.

They’ve learned how to grocery shop without arguing about brands of pasta.

    They are, objectively, fine.

    Which is precisely the problem.

Somewhere between sponsorship shoots, playoff runs, and arguing over whose turn it is to unload the dishwasher, the fire that once burned hot enough to survive secrecy and rivalry has… softened. Not gone. Not broken. Just familiar.
    Comfortable. Predictable.

When a league marketing campaign crowns them “Hockey’s Ultimate Love Story” and assigns a documentary crew to follow them around for the season, Shane jokingly tells Ilya:
“Guess you’re going to have to fall in love with me again on camera.”

Ilya smirks. “Please. I could make you fall in love with me again in one week.”

    It’s a joke.

    Until it becomes a challenge.

  2. The arena is beautiful like this, cleared of fanfare and chaos. There’s a special kind of stillness that comes after a big game: a private warmth despite the cool of the ice. To his surprise, Shane’s already on the ice. Ilya blinks, once, then twice, mouth parting. Shane’s wearing clean, black skates— figure skates, doing laps around the rink. His skating has shifted out into something more unhurried, elegant. He’s not a professional by any means — the nature of his strides are still darting. Operating, by habit, towards an invisible puck. “Holy shit,” says Ilya. or: hollander, for all his quirks, is… hollander. rozanov, if were possible, falls a little bit more in love (now with chapter 2: shane is once again filling in for his friend at an exhibition gala and is doing a poor job of secretly practicing for it. ilya finds out and attends the performance)

  3. When Ilya finds out of his teammates has been using, his decision to turn him over to coach has the entire team penalized and they lose their momentum right before playoffs. To make matters worse, even after a press release clears the rest of the Raiders of any wrongdoings, the whole league still things Ilya is a cheater. Including Shane's team, who talks about it nonstop until one night he snaps and starts a fight with his own team on the ice.
    ---
Ilya stepped towards him, hand grazing his elbow to try to get him to loosen up a bit. “You said, earlier, that it was me,” he mumbled. “You fought because of me."

“Just a bit,” Shane joked weakly, looking back up at him. “They just- they hate you, Ilya. My parents, my team, my fans. And I hear it so much in the locker room or during practice, but on ice I- I couldn't fucking stand it anymore.”

“Is sweet,” he murmured, threading his hand through Shane’s hair and nudging him to lay his head on his shoulder. “But their words don’t hurt me.”

Shane sighed, nuzzling against the fabric of his shirt for a moment. “Hurts me, though,” he said softly. “I don’t like hearing anyone accuse you of cheating.”

  4. To Ilya’s surprise, Shane climbs up onto the quartet’s mini stage and sits down on the chair behind the cello. The other musicians disperse too, taking their rightful places in the semi circle. Shane adjusts his arms and picks up the bow, letting it rest on the body of the instrument. The cello is a little too big for him, but it’s not too difficult to accommodate: he nods, satisfied. They begin. Music fills the area, gentle in its melody. Shane looks a little apprehensive at first, if not nervous, as his arm trails back and forth with the bow, but by a couple lines into the piece, he eases, shoulders unwinding, body swaying loosely. He settles into the music, focus sharpening— it’s clear he has years of experience behind him. “Oh my god,” Ilya says. or: at a gala they’re at, the cello player of the quartet playing live music never shows up. shane fills in for him (now with ch 2: ilya asks shane to play something for him. naturally, shane picks ‘can’t help falling in love’)

  5. Many people have started turning their heads at the commotion. Ilya’s half sure it’s just another drunken brawl, a frequent byproduct of stupidity and poorly held liquor— but Svetlana, who is sitting angled towards whatever is happening, squints her eyes. Surprise splashes across her face. “Podozhdite. Isn’t that Hollander?” Later, when he finds Shane outside on the curb, Ilya says, “What the fuck.” “I’m half Japanese,” Shane replies like it explains everything and like he didn’t just deck a man flatly out. “My mom put me in Karate when I was little. What that guy said wasn’t right, and he initiated it, so.” or: hollander gets into a bar fight. rozanov tends to his wounds afterwards
