  4. "Hi, solnyshko.” The Russian pet name set a firework off inside Shane's mind as he heard it cooed from behind him. The intonation was just as he remembered, but the voice was much deeper. He turned and felt himself short circuit. It took every ounce of willpower to not let his jaw drop cartoonishly to the floor. Shane would recognize his individual features anywhere, even after 5 years. But it was as if someone had snapped their fingers and the smug, silly Russian boy who had been attached to Shane's hip for 3 summers was transformed into some sort of fucking Adonis right before his eyes. “Ilya-” was all Shane managed before strong arms were wrapped around his waist and lifting him off the ground in a greeting all too familiar from years ago. OR When Shane Hollander & Ilya Rozanov spent their summers as teens in an elite hockey camp, they quickly became inseparable friends. But they lose touch when Shane moves on as a prospect for the NHL and Ilya for the KHL. Years later, Montreal makes a bold move to take the hottest player in the KHL. After hearing of the Russian's reputation, the Montreal Captain is tasked with keeping his old best friend and new teammate out of trouble.

  5. Ilya has heard people say that suicide is a selfish act. He's heard people say it about his mother, and it used to make him furious. He’d punched Alexei for it, once, broken his nose when he said, why are you still moping over that selfish bitch, she left us without a thought, even though he knew it was his brother’s grief speaking and not his heart.

That word, selfish, made him so furious, maybe, because some small part of him believed it. Some part of himself, a part of him that he was too ashamed of to acknowledge, let alone to name, believed that his mother should have been braver. Should have been stronger. Should have fought harder to stay with him, to keep taking care of him. Would have, if she’d loved Ilya as much as she claimed to.

He knows now, now that he has Shane, that it isn’t true. He knows it is possible to love someone entirely, completely, with the purest and truest love, and for life to still be unbearable.

  6. Shane has married Ilya, a known chaos monster, with a penchant for fast cars and designer clothes. Shane has spent his life making sure he was financially responsible. Now it's time to merge these two different approaches to money management; It does not go the way Shane thinks it will.

They had been married for 32 days.

And now was the big conversation: estate planning, their assets, and what combining them would look like.

Shane had found a financial planner. Had set the appointment.

He was, after all, Shane Hollander; he had approached his financial future with all of the key characteristics of a Hollander. His mom had guided his career, negotiating sizable contracts for him, and his father worked for the Treasury. It was in his blood.

Ilya, meanwhile, had approached today's meeting with the same organizational energy he brought to most things in his life, except hockey: confident, yet chaotic, and generally not stressed out about whether things would work out in his favor.

  7. Ilya clapped his hands decisively, the same way he did when the team was about to hit the ice. "Let me be your wingman. This will be fun."

He meant it. He wanted to encourage Shane to embrace this, to see if it could help take some of the edge off this tense, tightly wound man sitting across from him.

Shane bit his lip, and Ilya found his eyes fixating on his plush mouth. Ilya would have to organize a line, complete with a velvet VIP rope the first time he took Shane out on the town to get laid. He was stunning, and he seemed to have yet to realize it.

  13. “Shane has boyfriend?"

“Mom thinks so. He’s dodging my texts, but it definitely seems like he’s seeing someone.”

Ilya's whispered "No" was drowned out by a loud snort from another teammate, who said something like, "Good for lil' bro."

Ilya shouldn’t feel like dying. Should have expected this to happen at some point. Deserved it, even. He had been ghosting Shane for months, after all.

In which Ilya knows he's not good enough to be with his best friend's little brother. He spirals over Shane possibly dating someone else nonetheless.

Shane tells himself this is why it takes him so long to realize. That lately, Ilya’s gone quieter during their evening nighttime routine before bed. When they shower and brush their teeth, Shane meticulously flossing between each molar while Ilya sort of haphazardly takes care of his own business, that Ilya doesn’t joke or laugh as much as usual. Shane squints at the group. “What have you done?”

“Is the drain hose connected properly?”

“Don’t look at me!” Arty whines. “Do I look like I know how to fix a drain hose? I don’t— stop looking at me!”

What they don’t expect is Ilya Rozanov accidentally soft-launching his husband in real time. 18. "What are you doing here?"

Ilya looks at him. Shane has not moved from the doorway. He has one hand still on the frame.

"I don't know," Ilya says, which is the truest thing he has said in months.

Shane makes a sound that isn't quite a laugh. "That's not—" He stops. Runs a hand over his face. "You can't be here, Ilya."

The name. Again. Said almost like an accident.

"Why are you here?" he asks instead of responding to that.

    Shane goes still.

"This isn't your place," Ilya says. Carefully. "I mean, you don’t live here. You live somewhere else, a real one, nicer, bigger, or I don’t know because I have never been to it. So why are you in the fuck building at four in the morning?"

Shane's jaw tightens. For a second Ilya thinks he won't answer, that he will turn and go back inside and this will be just another door between them and then Shane says, low and bitten-off: "I come here sometimes."

    "Why?"

    "You know why."

Or, After Shane leaves Ilya in Boston, Ilya becomes a mess and Shane thinks he's ruined everything. They both seek each other silently until they cross paths again. Eventually, someone has to say something.
