Shane understands that Rozanov must be a person, though when he scans through his memories—the ones of being sixteenish and the ones he’s made in this hospital room—he can’t conjure up any details.
“Who?” He asks, staring up at her.
“Oh, I should’ve realized. He’s the captain of the other team. You two are pretty serious rivals,” she chuckles. “He just came by to see how you were, and apologize I suppose.”
“Apol’gize? Did he hit me?”
“No, no. But, captain to captain, you know….”
After the nice, pretty nurse leaves, Shane is alone for a moment. He finds himself looking at the doorway, imagining a shadow there, a Rozanov. He has a professional rival? Maybe he’s like that Russian kid everyone says is going to give Shane a run for his money.
“Rozzzzanov,” Shane says to himself, his hand coming up to rub his chest. Distantly, there’s a beeping that’s getting faster.

What? “Did somebody else give you that bruise then?” Yuna feels a bit hysterical. Has Rozanov Stockholm Syndromed her son?
“No,” Shane grits out, “it was, uh, Ilya. It was just. You know. Like. Um.”

Ilya starts calling Shane boring regularly after that, not cruelly but persistently, the way you press a bruise you know is there just to confirm it still hurts. Shane's cereal is boring, Shane's training schedule is boring, Shane's shoes lined up by the door are boring, and Shane responds with variations of "fuck off" and "you're an asshole" that become increasingly creative and occasionally surprising. They do not talk about anything that matters. They talk about groceries and whose turn it is to take out the trash and whether Ilya's music is too loud at midnight, which it is. On the ice, Shane is someone else entirely. Ilya watches him from the upper stands every morning with vending machine coffee going cold in his hand and doesn't tell anyone. Or: Shane asked Ilya once how you know when it's the right person. Ilya described Shane to him, and Shane didn't recognise himself.
