If you’re wondering what the fuck happened to Scott Hunter, the answer is this: a series of cascading catastrophic decisions. A domino effect, a Rube Goldberg machine that starts at a club in Ibiza and ends with him eating a Montreal bagel on the floor.
In which Scott Hunter accepts a trade to Montreal, just as Shane Hollander is named captain.

When Scott Hunter ventured out on his balcony after the 2011 All Star Game, he only wanted to get some air. He didn't expect to overhear a couple of rookies having sex. He definitely didn't anticipate hearing his own name. But when Hollander catches him eavesdropping, Scott does the upstanding thing and offers his phone number in case the younger men ever have questions about being closeted hockey players. It's the least he can do, right? Anyway, he'll probably never get a text back.
Probably...
AKA Scott Hunter listens to the mating call—perhaps a little too well.

After coming out to Rose, Shane decides he doesn't want to lie anymore, even if he isn't sure coming out will mean he gets happily ever after with Ilya. When coming out to the Voyageurs leaves him wondering what his future in Montreal might look like, he lets himself be a little selfish, he lets himself wonder if there might be somewhere else he might be happy. If Montreal wants to get rid of a generational player, he's not about to stop them, especially if it means he can get a little closer to joy.

Or: Shane Hollander leaves Montreal in search of something better.

He'd still not seen them kiss or touch in any way that signified love or affection, despite their now very public relationship and the elephant-in-the-room matching gold rings. No, instead, he’d seen Hollander push Rozanov away and tell him to 'fuck off'. The next half an hour did nothing to lessen his view that they do not seem very compatible. They barely touch. Every time Rozanov moved to touch his husband, Hollander moved away, looking awkward. Instead, they bickered and threw chirps at one another like they were still bitter rivals on the ice. Then, slowly but surely, Shane Hollander got drunk. The second the third vodka passed Shane's lips, Wyatt Hayes had let out a long-suffering sigh and said, "Here they go." Scott frowned, not understanding. "What do you mean?" Boodram chuckled. “Oh, you’ll see.” Scott and Carter exchanged a glance as if to say ‘what the fuck?’. (scott doesn't understand how hollander and rozanov work. one night in his bar is enough for him to realise that he's an idiot)

The first time he saw Kip Grady, it was like a vague hum: the soft glow of initial, immediate attraction to a handsome man, letting himself test the water, a few brief words exchanged. Later, at his game, he’d been lacing his skates when the thought had occurred to him—what if Kip is watching? Attraction zeroed in on a singular focus.

It wasn't just "1221" by Anonymous
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid
2025-12-19
In Episode 2 of Heated Rivalry (2025) during the 2011 All-Star Game, Scott Hunter overhears Ilya Rozanov whisper “1221” to Shane Hollander when Ilya thinks he’s being so subtle no one would notice. In 2014 after Shane attempts Baby’s First Insult, Scott hits him where it hurts by suggesting he knows something.
But these geniuses were never really subtle. They weren’t subtle before that All-Star Game and they weren’t subtle after it. The show didn’t have time to show it, but Scott saw them being dumb and obvious way more than that one scene implied. Here are the deleted scenes.

Scott Hunter knew there was something weird going on between Ilya Rozanov and Shane Hollander. He clocked it the first time he saw them interact. He wasn't sure *what* it was, but he knew it was *something*. So he watched. For years.

He’s almost at his own door when the muffled sound of his own name catches his attention. “ —like an idiot. Scott Hunter is right next door.” Scott pauses, blinking. He then finds himself unconsciously stepping towards the door his name was uttered behind— before he abruptly freezes, eyes locking on the room number. It’s the room directly next to his own. The one Rozanov had walked out of just this morning. But that voice… it’s vaguely familiar, and it certainly doesn’t belong to Rozanov. Or: Scott Hunter has the unfortunate experience of rooming next to Ilya Rozanov at the 2011 All-Stars.
