  1. Shane has a problem. Shane has several problems, actually. They can differ day to day, depending heavily on whether or not he's running late to class or an assignment is almost due, but in general, his problems are thus: he is in love with his roommate, that roommate is Ilya Rozanov, and if Ilya ever discovers even half of the things Shane has done because of that crush, Shane will probably have to either change his name and transfer universities or fake his own death.

  2. As a straight man, Ilya Rozanov has never had a gay roommate before, but it’s going pretty well. Shane Hollander is kind, silly, and an even bigger hockey nut than Ilya. So when Shane starts bringing men over, and Ilya begins to want to bash their fucking heads in, Ilya comes to a startling conclusion: He must be homophobic. (He’s jealous.)

  4. Ilya clapped his hands decisively, the same way he did when the team was about to hit the ice. "Let me be your wingman. This will be fun."

He meant it. He wanted to encourage Shane to embrace this, to see if it could help take some of the edge off this tense, tightly wound man sitting across from him.

Shane bit his lip, and Ilya found his eyes fixating on his plush mouth. Ilya would have to organize a line, complete with a velvet VIP rope the first time he took Shane out on the town to get laid. He was stunning, and he seemed to have yet to realize it.

Shane is drafted to the Centaurs two years after Ilya. Ilya takes it upon himself to be rookie Shane's bisexual fairy godmother/wingman, and then immediately regrets it because he catches feelings.

  5. "What are you doing here?"

Ilya looks at him. Shane has not moved from the doorway. He has one hand still on the frame.

"I don't know," Ilya says, which is the truest thing he has said in months.

Shane makes a sound that isn't quite a laugh. "That's not—" He stops. Runs a hand over his face. "You can't be here, Ilya."

The name. Again. Said almost like an accident.

"Why are you here?" he asks instead of responding to that.

    Shane goes still.

"This isn't your place," Ilya says. Carefully. "I mean, you don’t live here. You live somewhere else, a real one, nicer, bigger, or I don’t know because I have never been to it. So why are you in the fuck building at four in the morning?"

Shane's jaw tightens. For a second Ilya thinks he won't answer, that he will turn and go back inside and this will be just another door between them and then Shane says, low and bitten-off: "I come here sometimes."

    "Why?"

    "You know why."

Or, After Shane leaves Ilya in Boston, Ilya becomes a mess and Shane thinks he's ruined everything. They both seek each other silently until they cross paths again. Eventually, someone has to say something.

  6. Shane Hollander arrives in Vegas with a question he hasn’t spoken out loud.

It isn’t complicated, exactly. It’s just the kind of question that requires honesty he isn’t sure he’s ready for - about what he and Ilya Rozanov have been doing for the past few years, about what six months of silence after Sochi actually meant, and about whether any of it is worth staying close to or whether he finally needs to go.

He gets his answer in a locked bathroom at the NHL Awards.

Ilya spends the summer convinced that Shane is fine. Upset? Yes. Angry? Definitely. But Shane always felt things fiercely despite what everyone said about him when he had his back turned. He’d calm down over the summer and then he’d be there like he always had been. He fills the silence with discipline and routine and the comfortable certainty that later is still available to him.

    He’s wrong.

By the time Ilya understands what he actually lost, Shane is already gone; and Ilya is left trying to find a way back to someone who closed the door long before Ilya had ever thought to just walk through it.

  8. “Oh my god, oh my god. Seriously, this is the best. I can’t believe you’re my neighbour. I’m calling it now, Hollander. This right here is the beginning of a friendship that will go down in history.” Ilya is 10 years old when his family moves from Jacksonville, Florida to small town Ontario. There, he forms an unexpected friendship with Shane, the boy living on the ginseng farm across the street. As they grow up and grow apart, their paths continue to cross at high school hockey games, in tabloid articles, and at one particular intimate Muskoka cottage. OR: A childhood friends to strangers to lovers AU in which Shane Hollander (up and coming indie rock star) and Ilya Rozanov (brooding artist) take nearly fifteen years to figure their shit out.

  9. MONTREAL VOYAGEURS PASS ON HOLLANDER FOLLOWING FINALS INJURY
Despite being projected as at least a top-three pick, Shane Hollander slips to 57th overall after a Grade III ankle ligament tear sustained in the World Junior Hockey Championships earlier this year.

BOSTON BEARS SELECT ROZANOV FIRST OVERALL, HOLLANDER IN SECOND ROUND
Boston bets on two of juniors' most electric players; one a sure thing, one a gamble. The Bears have never minded those.

Shane Hollander did not get drafted to Montreal. He gets drafted to Boston, fifty-seventh overall, after #1 draft pick, Ilya Rozanov. He has a plan for that. The plan does not account for Ilya Rozanov being the way that Ilya Rozanov is.

Shane Hollander only goes to the café near the rink because his daughter loves the hot chocolate. The fact that Ilya Rozanov remembers Louise’s order, gives her free cookies, and looks suspiciously happy whenever they walk in is completely irrelevant. Louise, however, seems to think the barista would fit perfectly into their little family.

  11. Shane Hollander has spent years building a quiet, careful life for himself and his daughter. He just focuses on work, parenting, and keeping Yuki safe in a world that has not always been kind to omegas like himself. Everything changes the moment Yuki slips away from him at a crowded public event and is found in the arms of star hockey player Ilya Rozanov, who handles her with a gentleness that leaves Shane unexpectedly unsteady.

What should have been a brief, awkward encounter becomes something far more complicated. Yuki adores Ilya on sight, and Ilya keeps showing up, offering small kindnesses, sending messages that turn into late-night conversations, and slipping into Shane's life with a warmth that feels dangerously easy.

Shane, who promised himself he would never rely on a stranger, let alone an alpha, finds himself drawn to the one man he should not want.

So he sends the text, even though they’re playing against each other in just a few hours. Even though it’s reckless, and it’s breaking all their rules. Even though he’s supposed to be rebuilding the distance that Tampa tore down, instead of letting it shrink even further. But he just can’t seem to help himself.

Everyone at McGill knows three things: their hockey team is the best in the country, the Rozanov family could buy half of Montreal, and Shane Hollander is completely off limits. So when new students start asking Shane out after winter break, Ilya Rozanov decides he needs to put a stop to it. Or: the horrifying realization that Ilya Rozanov might be in love with his best friend.

  14. Shrugging one shoulder far more casually than he possibly feels, Ilya says, “I like both. Is secret, okay?”

    “Okay,” Hollander says, voice cracking.

He doesn’t say anything else. The air’s so heavy around them that it feels like being in the middle of a scrum, the weight and heat of all those bodies pressing down on you. Danger always feels like hockey; it’s the most dangerous thing Ilya knows, except for this. Everything dangerous in his life involves men’s bodies and just how close he can get to them. Closer than he probably should.

A year after mysteriously dropping out of the 2009 draft, Shane Hollander is signed by the Boston Raiders, right behind Ilya Rozanov. Having the two biggest stars in the league on the same line is great for Boston — but playing alongside their worst rival was never exactly in Shane or Ilya's plans. Especially not when staying away from each other starts to feel just as impossible as getting along.

  15. “Sweetheart, your pretty little head is so silly. For every photocard I make of ugly hockey men, I make two of my gorgeous, radiant, pulchritudinous boyfriend. Sometimes three.”

A smile breaks through the heated haze of Shane’s expression. “You’ve been using the thesaurus Dad got you for Christmas?”

“I will beat Yuna Hollander at Scrabble one day,” Ilya declares against Shane’s hip bone.

In the year between the Cottage and the Centaurs, Ilya misses Shane more than ever. Svetlana’s teenage cousin offers a coping method: Kpop-style Shane Hollander photocards to stare at all day long. It's a shame carrying around pictures of fellow hockey players is just not socially acceptable.

    …At least, not yet.

  16. “But we have always kissed, we -”

“I know.” Shane says, face blushing crimson. “But like I said, I don’t want to do that anymore. We can still see each other, because I like what we do, but we have to keep that part out of it. Please.”

Ilya breathes in and out. He tries to be rational. Shane’s requesting that something change in their arrangement. It should be a simple answer. Yes. Of course. If that’s a boundary he wants to set, then Ilya should obey it.

But the feeling of loss is so overwhelming he can barely stomach it.

or, after Vegas, Shane doesn't let Ilya kiss him anymore when they hook up. Ilya doesn't take it very well.

  17. Shane wants to figure out if he's gay before he gets drafted—and no, the way he felt when Ilya Rozanov smirked at him with a cigarette between his lips in Saskatchewan has nothing to do with it. Unfortunately, the random guy he hooks up with to try and make sure one way or another takes a picture, and Shane gets outed before the draft. In the ensuing scandal, he goes seventh overall, to Ottawa.

It turns out, having the worst thing you can think of happen to you when you're seventeen years old can end up being pretty liberating. And land you an unexpected best friend.

  18. Shane is heavier than he used to be; his weight bears down on Ilya in a new way. He’s put on pounds of muscle since Ilya last touched him like this. Ilya flattens his palms, skims them under Shane’s undershirt, feels the flat solidity of his abs, the bulk of his lats, the swell of his chest. It’s the same and it’s new, this body; it’s the boy he couldn’t stop thinking about when he was 18 and the man he loved enough to let go at 26 and the person who somehow always comes to find him when he’s lost.

A stranger, and the love of his life.

    —

or, Ilya's father doesn't die in 2017; Ilya breaks up with Shane instead of confessing his love. They get older, but not any less stupid about each other. Shane gets a boyfriend; Ilya gets on medication; they work on becoming whole people. And they always find their way back to each other.

OR a story for those who love Shane and Ilya's baby love but ALSO think it's hot when people in their thirties make active choices about who they are and what they want in their partner!!

Note: the "cheating" tag refers to the relationship between Shane and his aforementioned BF, not to Shane and Ilya cheating on each other.

  19. “The arena is just buzzing with nervous energy after that hit, ladies and gentlemen at home. And down on the ice, it looks like we have-...hold on…is that-... 20. “Shane had been used to being alone. He'd never thought of himself as lonely. He honestly often craved the solitude, found it grounding. But that was before he knew what it was like to have someone to call, someone to touch. He was never lonely before Rozanov, but he'd been lonely ever since.”

April 2017: Shane does not get laid out on the ice.

Ilya goes through with ending it.

    Shane lets him.

What follows is eleven months of distance, denial, and a quiet kind of devastation neither of them knows how to name, let alone fix.

They learn how to live without each other.

(Or at least, how to pretend.)

And then, almost a year later, the infamous collision happens and Shane goes down cold.

And suddenly, neither of them can pretend it doesn’t matter.
