  1. Ilya is thirty three and his life is finally settled. Then a call from Russia informs him that Alexei has overdosed and died. This brings things to the surface.

  2. “Ilyusha,” Vasilisa says. “We are keeping this up indoors also.”

    “Is sun umbrella. For sun.”

    “There are lights.”

Ilya looks at Shane over her head. He looks exhausted, thinner than Shane likes, and happier than Shane has ever seen him.

“You see what you did,” he says. “Tyranny, everywhere, and everywhere, enablers.”

  3. Shane Hollander enters his rookie season focused on one thing only: playing the best damn hockey he can, and earning a spot in history as one of the greatest players in the league. Standing between him and his goal is Boston’s own promising young rookie, Alexei Rozanov.

Shane doesn’t particularly care about having a rival, but Rozanov seems as good a choice as any. He’s rude, arrogant, obnoxious off the ice and frustrating on it. And he’s pretty damn good at hockey.

Unfortunately, he also has a younger brother, who Shane finds much more interesting.

The Hollander-Rozanov rivalry is alive and well. And caught in the middle of it, is Ilya.

They're having breakfast when he tells them. He only remembers because he'd dreamed weird again last night. This time it was an older boy, who was trying to stop a little golden-haired baby from crying.

“What,” says Mom, in that flat voice she gets when she's trying not to sound surprised.

“...what?” says Dad, who clearly hadn't been listening. That's fine, Shane forgets to listen too, sometimes.

“I keep dreaming people I don't know,” Shane repeats patiently. He can be patient.

Shane Hollander habitually ends up in other people's dreams, which is fine. It's a family trait, on both sides, to slip into the dreams of the people you love. What's less fine is how Shane keeps dreaming strangers.

  9. He shouldn't—he's not supposed to call her that. He's seventeen. He's an adult. Mama is for children, for people who are idiots and emotional, for the soft and tender. Alexei is not soft. He is not tender.

    He cannot be.

He knew something was happening, had felt the hum of earth under his feet, the rustle of warning in the birdsong of the orenda of the world. Moscow sings, Mama has—had—always said. Open ears will hear the truth of the world if only one will listen.

    Still. He had ignored it.

  10. “Sveta - ”

“Ilya, there are photos. Of you. Ilya, you - you need to run.”

“Photos?” he asks, a bit stupidly. He knows what she means. Of course he does. He’s had nightmares about what she means. But - well. No. Surely not.

    Right?

“They’re old, I think,” she says, sniffling. “I just saw them on some gossip rag, but they’re - Ilya, they’re definitely you. With a man. They just got published on this stupid, shitty blog, but they’re going to get picked up the moment people wake up.”

Well, at least Ilya has a shirt on. Now, he just needs to find pants before his life ends.

  14. On very bad nights, Lyosha lets himself look. He pulls up KHL scores, reads articles about Dynamo’s powerplay. After a while, he wanders into articles about ex-KHL players who play for the MLH now. He’s a Dynamo diehard, of course, and prefers the KHL, but he’s a casual Valery Garipov fan, and it would not be a surprise to anyone that he occasionally keeps tabs on how the Puffins are doing. It would not be a red flag, to anyone watching.

The Puffins are not doing so well, as it happens. Not like another team, that leads the league and dominates conversations, to the point that even articles about the Puffins can’t help talking about them. To the point that sometimes, sometimes, there are even stray pictures. Nothing that Lyosha will ever linger on. He is his father’s son. He lives in Moscow. He has a daughter who is fifteen.

  15. Most days it felt like Alexei didn’t want a younger brother at all—like he would have been happier if Ilya had never been born, or if he’d gotten a brother that was less clingy, less soft.

But Alexei could’ve pushed him down the stairs and broken every bone in his body, and Ilya would’ve probably begged him to do it again, if it meant he’d spend more time with him.

  16. Aleksei is seven when his father remarries. He is nine when Yulia is born.

If things had been a little different, he would have hated her. He was prone to envy at that stage: restless, anxious, without purpose. Jealousy would have eaten him through and left room for something uglier to move in. It doesn’t, because Yulia loves him first.

Aleksei is nine and furious at the world, and he doesn’t stand a chance. His heart cracks, breaks and swallows her whole.

    "What happened?"

Ilya swallowed hard, his mouth dry as paper.

"Alexei and Zarina..." He started, and the words felt strange, distant, as if they belonged to someone else's life. "...got into a car accident."

He felt Shane's hands lightly squeeze his waist, his husband's body tensing behind him. He turned around to face him and saw the shock in the brown eyes, the slow, terrible realization of what that could mean.

"Zarina died on the spot," Ilya continued, his voice monotonous, numb. "Alexei was severely injured. He's in a coma."

"And?" Shane asked, but Ilya knew he was already connecting the dots. He knew the family history, he knew Polina, he knew enough to see where this was going. "What about your nieces?"

"That's exactly why Sasha called me." Ilya ran his tongue over his chapped lips. "Polina, my dad's widow, would never take on that responsibility. She's always hated the girls, always treated them like a burden. And I..." His voice cracked for a second. "I'm the closest relative. The only one left."

  18. Ilya knows what he is. He has always known what he is. The word for it in Russian tastes like something you'd scrape off a boot. The word in English is bisexual, which is a nicer word, which he has heard, which he does not use. He uses other words. He uses the word his brother taught him. He uses it on himself before anyone else can. He grows up. He gets good at hockey. He moves to America. He... falls in love. 20. Maybe together they could figure out a way to make sure Ilya was never afraid of David again. He really didn’t want to be afraid of David.

“Is… silly.” Ilya said. “Maybe not silly, but now that we are here and not there, I see it was silly. I broke the wine, and I thought - maybe everyone will be angry. And…” Clearing his throat, Ilya pushed past his discomfort to spit out the next part. “Well, angry back in Russia is not the same as angry here, I think.”

“What was angry like back in Russia?”

    OR

Ilya drops a bottle of wine, and it's fine. Really, it's fine. If only someone could tell Ilya's brain that.
