Shane Hollander wasn’t autistic was he? Sure he was different than other people but he was still normal right? It seemed that he was the only person who thought so. Maybe this is something he should think about more. Or Hayden (and others) says something that makes Shane rethink how ‘normal’ he really is.

Hayden and Jackie exchange a glance. “Have you noticed anything . . . different . . . about Arthur?” Hayden asks. Now it’s Shane and Ilya’s turn to exchange a glance. Shane shrugs. “Not really,” he says. “He’s kind of just like I was when I was a kid. Maybe being quiet is a bit odd for this family, but it’s not abnormal.” He expects Ilya to back him up, but Ilya hesitates. “He does not play like his sisters,” Ilya says. Shane looks at Ilya out of the corner of his eye. Clearly he’s missed something. Ilya isn’t making jokes, which means something about this conversation is serious. “You’re not worried about him, are you?” Shane asks. “No, no, no,” Jackie says. “We weren’t worried at all, actually, because he’s so similar to you. But, well, his preschool teachers pointed out some things and we looked into it a bit, and we ended up getting him tested. And, well. He’s autistic.” or Arthur Pike gets diagnosed with autism. Shane has some revelations. 9/13/2026 Update: I have now poisoned this fic to protect against AI scraping. The real word count is 6,714.

“Sylvia,” Shane murmured, clearly mortified.
“What?” she said innocently. “I’m just saying. And I’m also saying that a certain someone here, hasn’t stopped staring at someone else since they walked in. Their partner has been doing all of the work.” A brow was quirked towards the Russian paramedic.
Ilya nearly dropped his gauze “Da- I mean no, I—” he started, then stopped, flustered.
Shane looked like he wanted the floor to swallow him whole.
Cliff snorted under his breath and turned away, suddenly very interested in the supply bag.
Sylvia leaned toward Shane. “Ask for his number,” she whispered loudly enough that it wasn’t a whisper at all. “They’ll be taking me away in T-minus five minutes. You don’t wanna miss your shot kiddo!”
Or Shane is a Librarian and Ilya is a Paramedic. They meet , fall in love, have a baby together . Oh and Shane is Autistic and worries a lot.

"What happened?"
Ilya swallowed hard, his mouth dry as paper.
"Alexei and Zarina..." He started, and the words felt strange, distant, as if they belonged to someone else's life. "...got into a car accident."
He felt Shane's hands lightly squeeze his waist, his husband's body tensing behind him. He turned around to face him and saw the shock in the brown eyes, the slow, terrible realization of what that could mean.
"Zarina died on the spot," Ilya continued, his voice monotonous, numb. "Alexei was severely injured. He's in a coma."
"And?" Shane asked, but Ilya knew he was already connecting the dots. He knew the family history, he knew Polina, he knew enough to see where this was going. "What about your nieces?"
"That's exactly why Sasha called me." Ilya ran his tongue over his chapped lips. "Polina, my dad's widow, would never take on that responsibility. She's always hated the girls, always treated them like a burden. And I..." His voice cracked for a second. "I'm the closest relative. The only one left."

Shane had schedules to stick to, regimens to maintain, plays to study, drills to perfect. He needed to eat the same thing, every day. Ilya sat on the edge of his bed in the hotel room, phone in hand, scrolling through search results. The game against Boston had ended hours ago, a solid win, but his mind refused to settle. Shane had texted him earlier, something casual about practice schedules, but it stirred up the thoughts that had been building for weeks. Shane lived for hockey. Every drill, every shift, he analyzed it like a puzzle to solve. Off the ice, he carried that same intensity, always planning, always pushing. The only times Ilya saw him truly let go were at the cottage, fishing or just staring at the lake, or right after they collapsed together, bodies spent. Those moments revealed a different Shane, one who didn't need to control every detail. Ilya wanted more of that for him.
