Beneath the roiling irritation, Shane is pretty sure he’s going to feel stupid in about an hour about this argument.
Right now, though, he’s in the middle of it and annoyed enough to stay there.
“-any fucking sense,” he says, slapping the dishtowel in his hand down on the counter and only succeeding in winding himself up further when it hits a little puddle of dishwater that sprays droplets on him.
Unfortunately, the easiest outlet for this frustration is also the person who started this argument in the first fucking place: Ilya.
“It does not need to make sense,” Ilya says, arms crossed over his chest in a way that says he’s feeling just as ready to commit to the world’s most stupid fight about nothing as Shane is. “Is about feeling.”
“And you feel like you would love a worm?” Shane asks, mirroring Ilya’s posture in a way that’s meant to be mocking.
From the way Ilya’s jaw tightens, he noticed, and it sends a petty little thrill through Shane.

I always–” “Why are you wearing your glasses?” Ilya interrupts, and Shane notices the tension in his entire body when he speaks. “I ran out of contacts,” Shane says. “So you are wearing glasses to practice?” “Yeah, it’s just one practice,” he says defensively, even though he’s done nothing wrong. “I’ll grab a pair of contacts from the eye doctor this afternoon." “Right,” Ilya says, his eyes laser-focused on Shane’s face as his lips set in a tight line. “Is that a problem?” Shane quips, and it comes off kind of bitchy, but he’s so confused as to why Ilya would have any issue with him wearing his glasses to one practice. He normally loves Shane in glasses. Ilya seems to shake himself out of whatever weird-ass mood he’d fall into. He smiles, but it looks strained. “Of course not. Let’s go.” ___ Or, Shane has to wear his glasses to practice and Ilya absolutely cannot deal with it.

There’s so many things he wants to say. Like how much he loves Ilya. Or how glad he is that they’d taken the plunge off that scary, crazy cliff when they were teenagers. Or how even in the midst of the craziness and anxiety and unknown, Shane is so fucking excited for the life they’re going to have.
But it all gets caught in his throat as emotion takes hold, and all he can do is nod and say, “Okay.”
