The effect is instantaneous. Ilya’s hands fly to his sides, and Shane gets a front row seat as Ilya’s heart breaks before his very eyes. Eyes dimming and lips trembling in slow, painful technicolor.

“It does not mean anything,” Rozanov agreed. His hands were stretched out on the black granite of Shane’s counter. They were so large, so pale. Rozanov’s fingernails were square, trimmed short. Shane had felt them on all parts of himself, had had bruises made by those hands.

“Happy Valentine’s Day,” Harris says, holding out a card.
“Feels wrong to be taking a gift from another man,” Ilya quips, but takes it anyway. “What is this? ILY-a lot.” He stares at the card for a long time, jaw set and brows drawing together, before shaking his head. “I don’t get it.”
“Read it again, but slower.”
“ILY-a. Lot.” Ilya pauses, tilting his head and rereading it like the answer might appear if he tries hard enough. “I still don’t get it.”
Harris opens his mouth to explain—a bit annoyed at the idea of having to walk Ilya through the joke—when Shane steps in from the ice, breathless and a bit sweaty, clearly not paying attention as he fiddles with his gear.
“Hollander,” Ilya says immediately. “What does ILY mean?”
Shane blinks. “I love you?”
“Yes, I know you love me. But what does it mean?”
