A medical retirement took Shane Hollander off the ice, but photography gave him a way to stay close to the game. Now a prestigious editorial photographer, he’s the obvious choice when ESPN revives the Body Issue.
And Ilya Rozanov, fresh off the best season of his career, is the obvious choice for the cover.
They haven’t spoken in nearly seven years. And all the reasons why are suddenly coming back into focus.

“Good, well then that brings me to the real topic of conversation.” Another sigh from Coach Wiebe, “As I’m sure you’ve already guessed, those highlighted names have been offered rookie contracts and they’ve each expressed interest in living with a vet for their first year.”
Ilya felt his heart fall into his stomach, afraid of the next words to come out of his Coach’s mouth.
“We asked the rookies who they’d like to live with and, well, LaPointe wanted to board with you, Chouinard. And Young with you, Bood,” Wiebe then turned to Ilya who had frozen on the spot, “And Roz, Haas wants to live with you.”
Bood and Chouinard chuckled as they watched Ilya’s eyes widen in horror.
OR
Luca Haas was drafted 2nd overall by the Ottawa Centaurs in 2018. Two years later, he anxiously moved halfway across the world to play his rookie season with the team. He requested to live with Ilya Rozanov and they slowly became family.

And he's so pathetically lonely he accepts.

He's the captain of his university's hockey team, he's suspected to be the first draft pick in the MLH and he's able to maintain a 4.0 GPA on top of all that. His lack of a social life doesn't really bother him, he'll have time to date once he's achieved his life long dream. He's sure a girl will come along eventually.

He's turning into his mother and for some reason, Scott Hunter is the only one who sees him. And it scares him.

Most days it felt like Alexei didn’t want a younger brother at all—like he would have been happier if Ilya had never been born, or if he’d gotten a brother that was less clingy, less soft.
But Alexei could’ve pushed him down the stairs and broken every bone in his body, and Ilya would’ve probably begged him to do it again, if it meant he’d spend more time with him.
or: Ilya's father doesn't die during the 2016/2017 season. His brother does.

“Crazy fucking season, eh? Never thought they'd let a faggot like you back on the ice,” Hollander takes a step back, immediately moving out of the way as Rozanov charges from his right, catching Bernese seemingly off guard, not anticipating him to actually hear the chirp. His chest was shoved – hard. It hurts him through his padding before his collar gets balled up and Rozanov violently shakes him, momentum favoring the speed at which he jumps him. “Watch your fucking mouth when you talk to my team,” he snarls. ; There's a new dawn on ice. And with revelation comes resistance. And with resistance, comes the very fist of the one who changes the game. Montreal is not their only problem. But with Ottawa slowly establishing themselves as a household name, their word and play is law on the ice.

Scott texts Kip that he’s bringing Shane back to the apartment. “Hey, I kind of have a big favor to ask you and I need you to be supportive about it.”
Kip replies almost immediately, “That sounds ominous, is everything okay?”
“I don’t know,” Scott decides to be honest, “You know how I’m shooting that commercial with Shane Hollander today?”
“Yes…” He can practically feel Kip’s anxiety leaking into that one text.
“Well, I think something happened to him. Something bad. I’m bringing him back to the apartment.”-
Shane and Scott are supposed to be doing a commercial together but Scott notices that Shane’s acting… off. He finds out what happened in Vegas and forces Ilya to fix it.

“Hollander has a fire lit up under them,” Wiebe agrees, but it isn’t quite enough just yet. They weren’t pushing just to score, they were pushing to widen the gap as much as they could. “He’s fast,” Rozanov taps his temple. “And has very sharp eye for openings. Very smart with his movements,” “I’d be weeping if I had someone like that drafted from my team,” “All I am hearing is that you would make sure Hollander retires in this team,” Wiebe smirks, “Maybe after a Stanley Cup or two,” Shane finally goes toe to toe with Montreal under Ottawa's flag. The rookies are scared shitless, and his old team looks worse for wear. It breaks his heart, but there can only be one who holds the Stanley Cup. It wasn't going to be the Metros.

Ilya barely listened to a word coming out of his lips, more focused on what was nestled inside of them. His incisors, which should be elongated into full fangs like Ilya’s, were only slightly pointed. None of the other teeth had sharpened either, something no vampire could avoid when hungry. Ilya had only seen such teeth on a certain type of vampire, ones that would never have been left alone to cry in an alley while a strange vampire fed. This vampire, this Shane, was a fledgling. Or Ilya tries to get a quick meal in and ends up adopting a hurt vampire and defiling him in the same night

Shane and Ilya's first photoshoot post-coming out. It goes as well as you'd expect it to. ___ Then Ilya whispers, right into the shell of his ear, “Now we look like penguins.” And it’s not at all what he expected to hear. He makes a strangled sound, his hands flying down to cover Ilya’s own on his waist. “What?” Ilya rocks them side to side, small and deliberate, like they’re waddling. “Penguins are romantic. They mate for life. You are my penguin.”
