  1. Slowly, the realization of what he is asking him to do sets in. “Shane,” he croaks, his voice breaking. I can’t hurt you. “Please,” Always so pretty when he begs. Even like this, all messed up and bloody. Ilya loves him more than life. “I don’t want anyone but you touching me." That finally did it. During the Boston vs. Montreal game, Marleau doesn't knock Shane out completely but still injures him. While a fight breaks out, Shane begs Ilya to help him, right there on the ice in front of the whole arena. Unfortunately, Ilya could never say no to him. [SECOND CHAPTER WITH REACTIONS NOW ADDED]

It doesn't matter, though, and the next morning there's a line of Cyrillic across his chest.

I don’t think this is the Shane Hollander brands are expecting.” “You are beautiful, perfect, moy lyubimyy,” Ilya is quick to disagree. “Ilya is right,” Yuna says, “and Shane, they know you’re pregnant. That’s exactly why they want you! You’re breaking barriers for omegas in the NHL. A pregnant, star NHL player? Just think of how much hope young omegas would feel looking at you!” Ilya winces. Ilya Rozanov answers.

What starts as an accident turns into a habit — late-night messages, honesty, and a version of Shane that exists without an audience.

Ilya figures out who he’s talking to long before Shane does.

    He doesn’t say anything.

    Instead, he keeps replying.

  8. “Shane Hollander,” Rozanov says in his deep, thick accent.

“Rozanov,” Hollander nods. His voice cracks embarrassingly so he keeps talking, hoping the other man won’t notice. “Just came up here to get some air. I didn’t see a sign saying not to so I think we’re allowed. It’s chilly, eh? But a beautiful view,” he rambles.

“Ah yes,” Rozanov says flatly. “London, Ontario. Famous view.”

Shane can’t tell whether he’s being sarcastic. He probably is. He’s kind of an asshole, Shane thinks to himself, not for the first time. But an asshole who makes Shane’s stomach do weird things. Things that he wants to experience again so that he can properly label them. For science.

What if last year's Hockey Canada sexual assault trial happened in the Heated Rivalry universe, not with the 2018 gold medal team but with Shane Hollander's 2009 team? A nearly decade-long situationship with consent king Ilya Rozanov makes the Hollander who walks into the courtroom in 2017 a very different man from the boy who ran out of the hotel room all those years ago.

  11. Men do not cry. Ilya knows this, as much as he knows that being strong is only part of the battle ahead of him; being seen to be strong matters more. Ilya is twelve years old, and no longer a child. It has been four long, brittle days since his mother— since her accident.

The practice rink is busy, tonight. Under the stern tutelage of Coach Baranov, everyone here is fighting to justify their time on the ice. Hockey, Baranov tells them, often, is not a team sport. Hockey is an act of violence, and of endurance.

Ilya believes he is practiced at both.

”Shane Hollander of the Montreal Metros has been accused of homophobia after making an insensitive joke regarding gay marriage. This is especially hurtful due to its timing — following a shutout game against the New York Admirals, where Captain Scott Hunter resides as the only openly gay player in the MLH. Our insider source confirms this is not the first time Hollander has expressed his negative opinion on the LGBT+ community.
Our team has reached out to Hollander’s representative staff and is awaiting a response.”

“Yes. In recent games-” Ilya paused. Hollander didn’t interrupt him. “Have you read what they said about you?”
    “Who’s they?”
    “People. Hockey people.”
Hollander stared Ilya down. “Is this supposed to motivate me?”
    “No, um, I-”
“You should see the shit they say about *you*.”
Ilya most definitely did see it.

The NHL adds another team, resulting in an expansion draft. Shane and Ilya, both nearing the end of their careers at age 35, find themselves on the new team. Can they both prove that they’re not “too old” to lead a team to victory? And can they be honest with each other in the process?

  14. Shane heard a strangled shout tear free from his mouth, and then his body was moving without his brain’s input. He flew across the ice, ripping his gloves off and reaching for Ilya’s throat. He wrapped his fingers around the warm skin, feeling the flow of blood pulse harder with each beat of Ilya’s heart. His eyes raced across Ilya’s face, desperately looking for a sign that his boyfriend was still with him. Ilya’s eyes were wide and glazed, staring past Shane instead of at him. His face was losing color rapidly, turning a sickly shade of white that mirrored the ice beneath him. His mouth was open, loose and slack, mouthguard still jammed into his upper jaw. Shane watched in terror as Ilya grew limper in his arms.
    ——————————————————
During a Boston-Montreal game, Ilya's neck is cut by a skate, and Shane is forced to witness the love of his life bleeding out on the ice in front of him. All of the plans they have made seem to be slipping away before his eyes, right when they were so close to finalizing Ilya's transfer to Ottawa. As they race against the clock to save Ilya's life, Shane reckons with the secrets they have been forced to keep and fears that they might never get to live their truth out in the open.

Scott Hunter is an orphan. He lost his parents when he was twelve. A drunk driver killed them both.

  16. "I told him to pick up milk," Shane sobbed, the sound hysterical and broken. "That’s the last thing I said to him. ‘Pick up some milk on the way home.’ I didn't say I loved him. I didn't say stay. I didn't even look him in the eye because I was frustrated with the loss. I just told him to buy fucking milk." Ilya Rozanov has always been a master of control. Of the puck, of the media, of his own jagged edges. But lately, the edges have started to blur. The "Czar" is retreating, leaving behind a house that looks like a museum and a husband who is starting to feel like a stranger. When the last of Ilya's mess is cleared away and his ring is left behind like a final period at the end of a sentence, Shane has to face the terrifying truth: Ilya doesn't think he’s leaving a hole behind, he thinks he’s cleaning one up. Kinda compliant to The Long Game, but before Ilya talks about his depression with Shane, or goes to seek help.

  17. Newly turned vampire Shane Hollander is determined not to be a monster or let his new status stop him in any way from his dream of becoming an NHL star. He stubbornly keeps a diurnal schedule, only drinks animal blood, and never so much as bares his fangs in polite company.

His careful rhythm is disrupted when natural born vampire Ilya Rozanov waltzes into his life. Ilya is his opposite in every way: no sleep schedule to speak of, freely mixes matters of blood and sex, and grins with his fangs when he’s particularly pleased.

All this should repulse Shane, of course, not make him so desperate it’s as if some part of him has been waiting his whole life to surrender to the uncontrollable attraction.

Ilya wasn't okay, but he wasn't going to tell anyone that. Telling people would mean dealing with it. And he had Shane now, which was enough. Shane Hollander knows he’s not a small guy. Years of hockey and workouts have built up his muscles, and lucky genetics from his father’s side places him just shy of six feet. He’s checked hockey players half a foot and several pounds more than him, knocked Scott Hunter into the ice in the one fight he’s ever actually thrown hands in. But as much as Shane loves the game, the fast movements, passes, and team camaraderie, there were times where he could only feel regret at following the path of athletic fame. He puts on the media smile he practices in the mirror as he brushes his hair each day, uses the bright lights of press conferences to erase his view of the audience, and keeps his answers simple and focused on hockey.

The number of people outside the arena still makes him feel crushed in on all sides, small. Eyes trained on his face, cameras flashing, pens and cell phones being passed into his hands. The itch of it all settles under his skin.
