David gets diagnosed with prostate cancer a few months before Shane turns forty.

“It’s nothing for you to worry about,” he says, right before he drops the news. Family dinner: pasta with vodka sauce, roasted broccoli, a tower of garlic bread stacked just as high as ever, even though Ilya, retired now, no longer has the appetite he once had. Usually, he still manages to put most of it away, even if it means he ends up groaning on the coach afterwards, begging Shane to rub his belly. Shane rolls his eyes, but he always does it, if only for the happy little sighs Ilya makes, like a fat house cat.

    --

Or: there's a cancer diagnosis, then a cancer scare, and Shane contemplates retirement.

  2. Jake asked if Asher had any family he could contact for him. “We wouldn’t even need to tell them what happened, Asher,” he’d said, like the problem was that Asher needed convincing.

“I don’t have any family,” Asher had said. He’d spoken in that same dead-sounding voice that he knew seriously unnerved people, but he couldn’t help it; he’d still been perfecting his normal-person voice at that point. “I never knew my mom. My dad is dead.”

Jake had deflated visibly but tried again and asked about friends.

Asher had stared at him for a little too long but eventually produced a response after the assistant trainer’s question had spent a moment rattling around his head. “I had a boyfriend,” he’d said. He’d smiled, like a reflex. Asher wasn’t even really thinking of Gabe specifically but rather the simple concept that he’d Had A Boyfriend, But Now He Doesn’t. “Kent kinda ruined that for me.”

  4. The truth was, yeah, Shane married Ilya, but he’d married hockey first. He married hockey the second he signed his rookie contract with the Metros, and his courtship began long, long before. And his marriage to hockey wasn’t like his marriage to Ilya. Hockey wouldn’t ever love him back. Ilya wasn’t going to chew Shane up and spit him out at some nebulous point after he turned thirty and before he turned forty, his joints busted and his mouth full of dentures and his brain fucked to hell and back. And that marriage—his first marriage—had always come before his second, illicit shotgun wedding.

It wasn’t ideal, maybe, but that was just how things were. Hell, it was probably the same for Ilya, too. The fuck was Shane supposed to do about it? Nothing, nothing, nothing. He liked his life just the way it was. He didn’t want to do anything different. He still doesn’t. And that’s the worst, most shameful part of it all: at the end of the day, some part of Shane will always wish he could wind back time like adjusting a watch; erase that Instagram post before it ever hit the internet and go back to the life they’d had before; the life that was slowly killing them both.

  5. At twenty-one, Ilya Rozanov is the Soviet Union’s most perfect weapon, a soldier of the Red Machine who has spent three years locked in a silent, jagged war on the ice with Canada’s golden boy, Shane Hollander.

When the Montreal Metros claim him as a "wasted" mid-round draft pick, the rivalry transforms from a professional grudge into a desperate lifeline. On the final night of the 1988 Calgary Olympics, he risks everything, his family, his career, and his safety, to start a new life in the West. Forced into a high-stakes billet under the roof of his bitter professional rival, Ilya must navigate a world where freedom feels like a new kind of prison.

As Ilya struggles to adapt, the crumbling Soviet empire reaches across the ocean, searching for leverage to help pull him back.

  9. “Good, well then that brings me to the real topic of conversation.” Another sigh from Coach Wiebe, “As I’m sure you’ve already guessed, those highlighted names have been offered rookie contracts and they’ve each expressed interest in living with a vet for their first year.”

Ilya felt his heart fall into his stomach, afraid of the next words to come out of his Coach’s mouth.

“We asked the rookies who they’d like to live with and, well, LaPointe wanted to board with you, Chouinard. And Young with you, Bood,” Wiebe then turned to Ilya who had frozen on the spot, “And Roz, Haas wants to live with you.”

Bood and Chouinard chuckled as they watched Ilya’s eyes widen in horror.

  10. Shane and Ilya get arrested hours after Team Canada wins the World Junior Championship. From one day to the next, their lives are flipped upside down. As prisoners – er, incarcerated persons –, they are no longer climbing the hockey social ladder. They are no longer rival captains and star hockey players bearing responsibility for their nations’ and their future MLH teams’ hopes. They are nothing more than cellmates awaiting trial, caught in a tedious cycle of empty days where privacy is a distant memory. However will they pass the time?

Good thing they have each other. Now if only they could be honest about their feelings... Ideally, before they're released and face the legal and professional consequences of their venture into crime.

  15. Ilya’s obviously aware that there’s something up with Shane, okay? No one who spent their formative years (as well as their twenties and thirties) obsessively watching Shane Hollander Best Goal YouTube clips could glimpse what was going on with the Metros last season and think that nothing had changed. He asked and asked over the summer months, and Shane denied and denied and denied to the point where Ilya had to wonder if Shane knew there was something up with himself. But that was silly. Of course Shane knew.

Ilya likes to think he’s the Shane Hollander whisperer. He knows about Shane’s dormant exhibitionism kink and how to trigger it without triggering what neither of them like to call an anxiety attack. He knows the difference between Shane's hungry stomach grumbles and impending-stomach-ache stomach grumbles. There’s probably not a freckle on Shane’s body Ilya hasn’t licked before, if he’s being honest. That’s not really impressive or a key to revealing Shane’s psyche or anything, but it’s probably worth mentioning.
