They would die for each other, they are best friends...they are also totally in love with one another and are just too stubborn and scared to admit it out loud.

Shane pulls himself back, just enough so he can meet Ilya’s eyes. He had considered that, on the car ride over. Considered waiving his No-Movement Clause for the Centaurs.
But then, he began to consider waiving it for a different team in a different city. A city that already has a house for them to share.
Ottawa made sense before, when it seemed like the only option for the two of them to be closer together.
But now?
“I could,” Shane says. “Or, I could request a trade to Boston.”
Or: it’s the Spring of 2018. A locker room incident disguised as a prank outs Shane, and his teammates discover his relationship with a rival NHL player— a player that Shane refuses to disclose the identity of.
In the following months, it becomes obvious that Montreal can no longer be a home for Shane.
Boston, however, just might be.

Her solution? Studying romantic social cues and flirting techniques. The textbook? Romance novels.
Well, it can't hurt to try, and anything Shane tries, he tries thoroughly. Maybe a little too thoroughly? He didn't expect for his book reviews to pick up a following, and he DEFINITELY didn't expect to become the (secret, anonymous) face of "allyship" in the MLH.
He's not complaining, though. The books resonate with him more than he ever could have predicted, even if the hockey is unrealistic as shit, and maybe he'll learn a thing or two along the way. Once friendship is on the table, Shane reconsiders the usefulness and immutability of the public rivalry narrative. Surely the NHL can make just as much money from a bromance as it can from a rivalry?
A missed call from J.J., a dinner at All-Stars, and an ill-considered mad dash to the airport send Shane's season in a very different direction to the disciplined three-peat he'd been planning back in October.
"This rivalry thing: it was everyone else who said we hated each other off the ice. There’s no rule that says we have to keep doing that forever.” Shane stared outside, past the blinding billboards and down at the streets below. “It was nice. Hanging out, last time.”
He knew what it looked like when Rozanov shut down, when he closed himself off and pushed the world away. He’d finish the conversation abruptly, curt, clipped, and retreat. So Shane knew he’d won when Rozanov finally answered with: “Are we six years old, Hollander? Asking if I want to play in sandbox with you?"
