  1. The first time it happens, JJ's soul jolts in its neatly held spot, and then splits right down the middle.

    Shane—quiet, brilliant, dependable Shane—is smiling.

    At him.

It's not his neatly caged media smile, or the smirk that Hayden gets; it's a tiny little grin, the corner of his mouth pulled up, a pinched furrow between his brow as if he's surprised that he thinks JJ is funny. His eyes are crinkled, his canines gleaming between the curve of his lips as he tilts his head to the side and says something.

OR: For JJ, there is no fall. There is only Shane Hollander, and enduring.

  2. When Shane was outed after a hook-up in Mexico gone public, Montréal dropped him, traded to Ottawa like he was not the captain who had begun a Voyageurs dynasty. And Shane didn’t believe in using arcane powers to get an unfair advantage in hockey (that was cheating and he had a very stringent moral code) but he did believe in karma. Good thing that Ilya Rozanov, Etsy Witch (four-point-seven stars rated) also believes in karma, and believes in discounts for cute hockey players scorned.

or - Shane Hollander wants to curse his old teammates. Ilya Rozanov is an Etsy witch. Magic definitely exists.

  3. “Okay, look. I promise I won’t interfere in any way, but he really wants to meet you. Come to the party, chat a bit, and maybe you’ll hit it off.” J.J. shrugged. “Why not?”

The sound of the glass slamming down on the nightstand startled J.J., but it didn’t even make Hayden twitch in his sleep. Neither did Shane’s next outburst.

“Maybe because I have a fucking boyfriend!”

J.J. just wanted the best for his Capitaine. He’d thought that meant helping him find a man to be in a happy and fulfilling relationship with. His plans, however, abruptly changed when he found out about Shane’s secret long-term boyfriend – and about who that boyfriend actually was.

  4. J.J. reminded himself every morning to be thankful. To be thankful for life, to be thankful for being a successful defensive man on a successful hockey team, to be thankful for his family and most importantly - to be thankful for the brothers he accumulated by playing the sport that he loves. However, in this continuous basking of thankfulness and gratitude, J.J. has sometimes found himself feeling empty. He was told many times that he was a complex puzzle, full of excitement and whimsy but very hard to put together. On many days, he felt completed; all the pieces matching together - creating a picture of beauty, wonder, and sometimes grace. But there were plenty days where he felt the piece or pieces were missing. He sought day in and day out to figure that out.

or the J.J. looks for the missing piece and finds it in Carter Vaughn.

  5. Following the internet success of Shane and Ilya's presentation at the NHL Awards, ESPN decided to contract with them to do a whole series. It goes far better than anyone could have dreamed.

    -or-

“When you think about it,” Jackie said, when Shane had dinner with her and Hayden a few days later, “hockey’s basically already reality tv.”

  7. Now that he could finally recognize who the man in front of him was, everything flooded back into the forefront of his mind. The nights he spent in Moscow poring over hockey content on YouTube, how watching the teen that was poised to be his rival stirred up newfound ambition to become the greatest instead. He remembered that career-ending hit as well, the way Shane’s body crumpled on the ice, tiny and unconscious, body contorted unnaturally as his teammates crowded around him. He remembered the disappointment he felt at not having anyone else to best, to directly compare himself against. Time had passed, and so too did that disappointment in favor of achieving the greatness that Hollander promised. And with that time, Shane Hollander was just another name of the past. But now he was right in front of him, freckles all in the same spots and gear replaced with ugly knit sweaters. Or In which Shane Hollander never became the hockey legend he was supposed to. Ilya Rozanov did. Somehow, in the midst of a blizzard, their stories intertwined once more.
