  1. In another timeline, Shane and Ilya hook up in Room 1410, Ilya slips out unnoticed, and they spend the next seven years trapped in the situationship from hell we all know and love.

In this one, Yuna Hollander walks in just as Ilya goes to leave and—through the combined power of misunderstanding, miscommunication, and a frankly alarming lack of follow-up—Shane and Ilya start dating in 2010.

Given the chance to grow up with rather than against each other, Shane and Ilya build a life thats steadier, safer, and far less frightening than their canon. Their rivalry fizzles before it ever has the chance to fully ignite, replaced by hockey’s most beloved “bromance", and in 2015, they find the courage to do the one thing their canon counterparts never got to do: tell the NHL and the world.

There is just one problem: No one believes them.

OR: Despite Shane and Ilya being out for two years, Scott Hunter is still considered the first openly gay player in the NHL, much to Ilya’s indignation.

  2. It's Ilya's first morning at Ottawa General as a nurse on the Internal Medicine Unit — a unit that's big, hectic, and has a wide variety of patients and illnesses alike. It’s a good thing, then, they have the ICU to fall back on; when a patient crashes, they’re called in to help stabilize the patient and determine the best course of care.

Fortunately, Ilya can hold his own in a critical situation.

Unfortunately, he’s slightly obsessed with one of the most competent nurses he’s ever seen — Shane Hollander.

Or; the story of Hollanov, as told through a number of shifts.

  3. Shane Hollander desperately needs to disappear.
After a spectacularly awful week, a remote Yorkshire cottage seems like the perfect place to hide from the press, rediscover himself, and drink an irresponsible amount of tea.
    Unfortunately, the cottage isn't empty.
The Russian stranger insists it’s his, but Shane has paperwork that says otherwise.
It's just after midnight, there's a storm outside, the roads are probably flooded, and the only available weapon is a stuffed fish.
Clearly, this is all Svetlana's fault.
They're both convinced the cottage belongs to them and they're both refusing to leave.
    A Yorkshire romcom.
Inspired by The Holiday (2006), with lashings of Wallace & Gromit.

  4. Set several months before the tuna melt:

The officer points at his entryway. “We noticed a doorbell camera when we entered. Is there a way we can take a look at that footage?”

Ilya frowns. The footage would easily prove that he spent the night at home, but it would also prove that he wasn’t alone. And if these cops know Ilya Rozanov, then they definitely know Shane Hollander.

“I’d like to know what this is about.”

“Shane Hollander was attacked outside of his hotel early this morning. The medical staff report he was saying your name."

  6. January, 2011, one week out from All-Stars: to the surprise of everyone except the Hollanders, the Rozanovs, a journalist, two editors, and in-house counsel, Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov announce they’re gay and bisexual in an exclusive for Men’s Health.

Five + one reactions to the shocking news.

Shane Hollander: I was in denial for a long time. I already stand out a lot as one of the only Asian guys in any given league. Having another thing that made me different was kind of a nightmare. But it turns out you can’t lie to yourself forever. I’m gay. (shrugs) Ten bucks says Rozanov’ll find a way to make this into a competition too.

Ilya Rozanov: I knew I was bisexual from a very young age, maybe twelve or so. So, you see, even though you interviewed him first, I was still faster than Hollander. But in Russia, culture has changed a lot even just in my lifetime. [The city of] Moscow banned public expressions by gays and lesbians when I was fifteen. I knew to be quiet.

  9. Ilya’s mouth quirked, and again his eyes flicked across Shane’s face, assessing.
Shane held his gaze. He’d read the file. Ilya Rozanov was the same age he was, but 26 looked a lot different when it had never had to be responsible for anything. Shane could already tell that Rozanov was going to make his job significantly more difficult for no reason except that he could—and best of luck to him. Shane had worked with difficult principals before, and when it came down to it, the job was very simple: keep them alive, keep your opinions to yourself, and go home at the end of the posting.

  10. “I had such a good time tonight,” Kip whispers, and traces his thumb over the curve of Scott’s smile.

“Even with the unexpected werewolf encounter?”

Kip knows he’s not entirely joking. Scott is always half-convinced they’ll get to a point where his life is simply too complicated and it will scare Kip off, but honestly, what’s a little surprise werewolf compared to what they’ve already made it through?

  11. When it happens the puck has just left his stick.

It's a clean hit, but Shane takes it horribly, crumbling on impact and colliding with the boards. While he tries valiantly to keep his head up, he feels himself slide sideways and his last fully coherent thought occurs as his head cracks against both the ice and the bottom edge of the boards.

Immediately, the arena starts to wilt.

“… We just want a future.”

“I have only been in love with one person…”

Shane falls backwards and sinks, the ice turning to water beneath him.

“Holy shit. I love you too…”

    “I love you…”

The words—memories?— are swimming amongst him, angled and distorted; they consume him, they’re are all he can process, even as someone else—a medic, maybe?— on the periphery now, says, "Just stay still Hollander."

  13. A butterfly flapping its wings in one part of the world may cause a hurricane somewhere else.

A conversation with Rose Landry leads Shane Hollander to make a decision that he may ultimately live to regret. Far from the eye of the storm, he crashes along the waves, beaten down by wind and rain.

Ilya Rozanov lies in the eye of a hurricane. Sometimes he drifts just close enough to the horizon to get into trouble. Just dangerous enough to keep life interesting - enough to remind himself that he's still alive.

A safe harbor can be found for both, if they can only get there.

  14. "Shane," Ilya interrupts, knowing that if he lets Shane go on much longer, he really will be on the next flight back. And as tempting as it is, he really likes all the free shit Shane gets to bring home and he's in desperate need of a new watch after the last barbecue at Bood's went slightly awry. "I'm fine, I just have lice."

There's a long pause, and though Ilya can't see Shane's face, he can imagine the exact look that's there. Forehead wrinkled, lips set in a thin line, his eyes moving slowly around the room as he tries to figure something out. "You're going to have to expand on that, I think."

"Turns out the sleepover I hosted for the Pikes had more than a few uninvited guests," Ilya offers and he hears Shane exhale in relief at the explanation, making a mental note to ask when he gets home exactly what other scenarios were playing out in Shane's overactive brain.

"I bet Hayden and Jackie feel awful."

Ilya has about twenty apology texts from Jackie he knows he needs to respond to. "Yes, they do."

"You're going to make Hayden suffer for this, aren't you?"

He grins, loving how well Shane knows him without even a hint as to what Ilya has planned. "Yes, I am."

  15. Ilya Rozanov has signed with the Ottawa Centaurs and the world is very confused.

Zane Boodram is probably the one person affected the most by this shocking turn of events and it couldn't come at a worse time. His mentors and fellow captains are gone, and he's been left to lead the worst team in the league by himself, which is bad enough, but now he has to deal with Ilya Rozanov joining the roster?
The Cents don't have a winning legacy to protect, but they do have a positive team culture built up over years by their previous captain. Bood is determined to make sure that all the work doesn't go to waste, so he's not letting the Russian Menace come in and change it.

Leaving Boston was supposed to be easy.
Ilya wasn't supposed to feel bad about. And he doesn't. Not really.
This is a good thing. A new team. The start of a new life with Shane.
But the Ottawa Centaurs are a mess and things would be a lot easier if Zane Boodram would stop being so weird about it all...

Ilya’s a generational talent, a star and recognised wherever he goes thanks to his talent on stage and the lucrative magazine and advertising contracts his fame brings him. He lives his life in Boston as best he can but recently someone has taken against him and while the threatening letters were unpleasant they didn’t bother him much. He was more bothered by the knife in his side that stopped him performing for months, but now he’s healed and due on stage in a few hours. He hopes he can still make it because he hadn’t been expecting a stranger with uncertain motives to approach him in a deserted alley. When he finds out exactly who he is his life gets much more complicated. 19. “Hollander, go back to your bench or—”

And… he just snaps. Throwing away the helmet he wasn’t aware he’s taken off, he barks, his voice booming. “That’s my fucking husband laying on the ice. I have every fucking right to he here. He’s my husband. I make the decisions here. If he…”—he can’t bring himself to complete the sentence, his eyes welling up with unshed tears—“If anything happens to him, all of you, every single fucking one of you, will answer to me. And rest assured, if you fuck up because you are too busy yelling at me to get him the help need needs, I will not be as gracious as I am being right now.”

The uproar in the arena is deafening as the ref finally skates out of his way, but Shane is by Ilya’s side now, his hand clutching his husband's. “I am here, baby,” he repeats over and over again. First in English, then in Russian. “You are okay. You are going to be okay, my love.”
