Three years isn't that long, really. It's long enough to get a Master's Degree in Art History. Long enough to build the foundations of a relationship that could last the rest of their lives. Long enough for a professional hockey player to figure out how to tell the world he's gay.
What happened between episode 3 and episode 5, with our sweet boys and all the people who helped them get there.

A man in a base cap, sunglasses, and oversized zip-up hoodie hops over the boards, joining them in the box. It's funny, Scott thinks, because that's exactly how he dresses when he wants to go out and not be recognized –

We Deserve Sunshine by Anonymous
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid, Game Changers | Heated Rivalry - All Media Types
2026-06-27
This work explores the previously unseen three and a half years in the lives and the relationship of characters Scott Hunter and Kip Grady from Season 1 of the Heated Rivalry television series created by Jacob Tierney. It begins where Episode 3 ("Hunter") ends and ends with the final scene of Episode 5 ("I'll Believe in Anything"). It follows Kip's growth from smoothie barista to graduate student and beyond. It accompanies Scott on his journey as a lonely and conflicted professional hockey star who became the Game Changer he was destined to be. And it chronicles the path to sunshine for their relationship.
Season 1 of the 2025 Heated Rivalry television series is treated as canon, and this work assumes the reader is very familiar with the show and especially the Scott and Kip characters within it. A few elements are inspired by events in the book Game Changer by Rachel Reid or other books in the series, but only to the extent that it does not conflict with TV canon. There are several original characters and new roles for familiar ones.

He answered the phone, pressing it tight against his ear even as he maneuvered his way through the locker room and toward the hallway. “Hey. Is everything all right?”
There was a moment of silence, shaky and stiff that worried Scott more than the five separate calls did. Scott’s frown deepened, pulse beginning to hammer beneath his skin. He threw caution to the wind, unable to think clearly over the nausea beginning to roil in his gut. “Kip? What’s wrong?”
“Is this Scott?” An unfamiliar voice filtered through the speaker and into Scott’s ear, doing nothing to calm the anxiety slowly ratcheting up higher and higher within him.
Scott paused for a moment in the doorway, not caring if his teammates noticed him. “Who is this? What’s going on?”
“This is Kip’s dad.” Scott braced himself against the doorframe, stomach clawing its way up his throat.

take it from the top by Anonymous

It's 2016. Scott Hunter is in his rookie year with the New York Admirals and at first glance his life is going great. He’s a generational talent slated to be Captain, a cinch for Rookie of the Year, and has just been named an MLH All-Star. Unfortunately, he’s also a closeted gay orphan with no swag, no bitches, and no friends.
But it’s fine. Scott just has to keep this one measly secret for another twenty or so years, and then he can retire and get a hot boyfriend and finally live his life as his true authentic self — whatever that means. Everything is going to be just fine.
Or: in which we are forced to contend with the hard hitting question of "what if Scott Hunter wasn’t old but Ilya Rozanov and Shane Hollander were?" and also "haha wouldn’t it be great if everybody was about 50% more Canadian?"

Scott took his sunglasses from the side pocket of his backpack and put them on. His phone vibrated. He pulled it out and there it was: a picture of Kip and Elena from across the street. Kip smiling, Elena pouting. Below it, the caption: "Please don't die crossing this sea of people."
Scott laughed to himself, put the phone away, and pushed the door open.
The screams of excitement crashed over Scott like a wave. Fans crowded the sides of the path, many with tears in their eyes, others with their arms reaching over the metal barricades, everyone wanting a piece of that night. Happy shouts celebrating the victory, hoarse voices declaring their love for the team, words of pride and admiration. Scott smiled slightly, giving a general wave as he walked, sharing looks of gratitude to both sides – until the smile froze on his face.
"THEY TURNED HOCKEY GAY?! SERIOUSLY?! FUCK YOU, HUNTER!"
The voice cut through the air like a blade. Scott swallowed hard, his eyes finding a compact group on the other side of the metal barricades. Not happy at all. Men, mostly, their expressions twisted with hate, being held back by the police officers doing security.
"HOPE YOU DIE, YOU FAGGOT!"

Scott Hunter's Life-Changing Road Trip by Anonymous
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid
2026-03-12
“Holy shit,” Carter says from the stall next to Scott, also staring at his phone. “Did you all see about Rozanov and Hollander?” The way Vaughan says it, it doesn’t sound like good news. Carter thrusts his phone in Scott’s face, and he takes it, pulls it back so the headline will focus. HOCKEY STARS CAUGHT IN STEAMY AFFAIR, the headline proclaims, and Scott skims through it quickly. Rozanov and Hollander, years—years?!—worth of videos and photos leaked. Scott is in an NHL locker room, watching his worst nightmare happen to someone else. Holy shit.

At Scott Hunter night, Ilya gets pulled into a drunken game of truth or dare with Scott and his teammates. “Come on, it’ll be fun,” Vaughn said, elbowing him hard in his side. A pretty woman was cuddled into his side on the couch, Gloria, and she gave a cute little giggle at this. On Vaughn’s other side, another Admiral sat, Huff, who was just rolling his eyes as well. Ilya scowled at him. “Is game for horny teenagers, no?” “So?” Vaughn shot back. “What, can't take the heat, Rozanov?” “I’m in,” Kip said hesitantly from where he is tucked under Hunter’s arm like a little baby bird. Hunter smiled down at him soppily, and something in that adoring look between them softened Ilya. “Fine,” he grumbled, taking a sip of his vodka and averting his gaze. Fuck, but he missed Hollander. “Hell yeah!” Vaughn cheered. “Alright, Scott, it's your night so you get to go first. Truth or dare?” Hunter gave his teammate a half-hearted glare but sat back, expression contemplative. “I guess, truth?” Vaughn smirked, and Ilya felt his spine straightening, his radar for mischief going haywire. Maybe this would be fun after all… “Who said I love you first?” Rozanov let out a booming, incredulous laugh. “Oh my God, Vaughn, you are so boring.” “I was low-balling,” he argued back. “You gotta ease them into asking for the juicy stuff, Rozanov.” He blew a raspberry at him, which made Vaughn give a startled laugh. At the railing, Matti Jalo looked amused. He’d always liked Jalo. His chirps were actually funny, unlike the rest of the old, boring Admiral players. “Fine, Hunter, answer boring question,” Ilya said, waving his hand dismissively. Bennett, who was nursing a soda, shook his head at him, bemused. Ilya winked at him. Bennett wasn't so bad for a goalie. Still weird, and ancient, obviously. Slow. But a decent guy. Hunter looked down at his boyfriend. “I did,” he admitted. “It was, well everything happened pretty quickly, for us.” Ilya fought the urge to roll his eyes again. Hunter was just as lame as he’d always suspected. He shoved the ball of envy back down his throat, pummeling it back into place. “Booo, next,” he said instead. Hunter bristled a little at that, but Kip laid a quelling hand on his arm, giving Ilya a searching look. He looked very pretty, actually, with his slightly mussed hair and lined eyes. A little sexy, even. He wondered how Hollander would react, if he showed up with eyeliner on… Ilya filed the thought away for another time, glancing between Hunter and Kip and the rest of the Admirals who had turned up here to support them. They were all still a little suspicious of him. Even as he sat here in a gay bar in Las Vegas, playing a kid’s game with them, while the rest of the league's best and brightest stayed away. He couldn't really blame them. He understood the wariness. Hunter glared a little but then relented, casting his eyes to Bennett. “Eric,” he said. “Truth or dare?” Bennett shifted and asked for a dare, and Ilya couldn't help but study him, wondering what truth he was hiding from. Though, he could probably guess. He kept playing with his wedding ring, and he was like a thousand years old. His money was on the wife or retirement. Maybe both. Bennett was dared to go and dance with someone for thirty seconds, which he did with absolutely zero shame, sidling up to the first guy who batted their eyes at him while they all stood at the railing, cheering him on. It seemed that Bennett liked them young, and pretty, and well, male. Interesting. Bennett's cheeks had a light dusting of pink on them as he returned to the cheers of the table, sliding back into his seat with a sheepish grin. The truths were mundane, the dares barely even risqué. Until, suddenly, Hunter was turning to him, and there was this look in his eyes, slightly knowing, a lot smug. Ilya had chosen dare. Bennett wasn't the only one hiding from uncomfortable truths. “I dare you to call Hollander, on speakerphone, and use a pickup line on him.” He felt his eyebrows rise as the table all burst out laughing. That felt… very targeted.

Appeasing the Hockey Gods by Anonymous
Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid, Heated Rivalry (TV)
2025-12-22
Carter Vaughn believed in the Hockey Gods the way other people believed in weather forecasts. You didn’t have to like them. You didn’t have to understand them. But if you ignored them, if you scoffed or got careless, you were going to get soaked without an umbrella and then act surprised about it. Carter had been playing hockey long enough to know better. So when Scott Hunter goes on a hot streak after changing his pre-game routine he has to find out more.
Scott Hunter realizes that maybe it's ok to let his friends in a little and introduces them to Kip as his friend who makes him smoothies.

Scott must be confused as hell if he was asking for Kip. Especially in front of his teammates. Kip should say no, that he was a friend from outside New York. He lived in Vancouver or Hawaii or England. Scott was quite literally concussed, he didn’t actually want his ex-boyfriend showing up. It had been made abundantly clear that Kip and Scott’s friend groups would not be meeting each other.
“I—yeah. What hospital is he at?” Kip said.
