Summary:
January, 2011, one week out from All-Stars: to the surprise of everyone except the Hollanders, the Rozanovs, a journalist, two editors, and in-house counsel, Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov announce they’re gay and bisexual in an exclusive for Men’s Health.
Five + one reactions to the shocking news.
Shane Hollander: I was in denial for a long time. I already stand out a lot as one of the only Asian guys in any given league. Having another thing that made me different was kind of a nightmare. But it turns out you can’t lie to yourself forever. I’m gay. (shrugs) Ten bucks says Rozanov’ll find a way to make this into a competition too.
Ilya Rozanov: I knew I was bisexual from a very young age, maybe twelve or so. So, you see, even though you interviewed him first, I was still faster than Hollander. But in Russia, culture has changed a lot even just in my lifetime. [The city of] Moscow banned public expressions by gays and lesbians when I was fifteen. I knew to be quiet.
